Good Morning! Quite a few new faces have turned up here lately, so it felt like a good time for a quick reintroduction... I'm Paul - AKA "Reality Capture Guy"... 🤓 For nearly 20 years at Leica Geosystems and Hexagon AB, I've been helping people get from a laser scanner on site to something useful on someone's desk. These days I look after technical sales for Hexagon GeoCloud across EMEA. The problem is, #realitycapture technology is both very cool and equally exciting (to me, anyway).... and I am like a puppy on Christmas morning. So when Reality Capture Network gave me the opportunity to talk all thing Leica Geosystems during INTERGEO Expo & Conference, I was more than happy to take part - and so were my hands! 😆 I will share the short video from the stand soon AND the in-depth interview too... The most expensive question in reality capture is "What is THAT?" - asked back at the office days later. So here's my habit in Leica Geosystems Cyclone FIELD 360. If something on site will confuse the person doing the processing, tag it where it is! Spot the little odd things: a weird glass wall, a locked plant room, a scan you had to redo. Drop a tag at that spot in the point cloud with a photo or a quick voice note for future reference... The tags travel with the data into Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS or Hexagon GeoCloud. Honestly, it takes ten seconds. Skip it and someone at a desk spends an hour guessing, or worse, sends you back to site - OUCH! Happy Tuesday! Surveying isn't a cost line - it's the foundation everything else gets built on. So I was really pleased to see the Geospatial Survey Association launch the "Geospatial Accord" last week, with over 100 people in the room at Twickenham, UK. The number one problem they named? "The race to the bottom on price." I've seen it for nearly 20 years. Surveyors appointed late, briefs that don't say what the data is for, and the cheapest quote winning. Then everyone pays for it later in clashes, rework and site visits nobody budgeted for! Do it properly the first time. It's cheaper in the long run. Morning all! Gaussian splats just learned to spot the difference... So, most of the splatting conversation so far has been about how pretty it looks. This one caught my eye for a more practical reason. Researchers at Technische Universität Wien captured a flood control site on eight visits over seven months, then fused the lot into one model. Each splat knows which visits it belongs to. The bits that haven't moved get sharper with every capture. The bits that have changed get highlighted, right down to fine detail. Now think about that as a surveyor: Stockpiles, slopes, site progress, heritage decay. Repeat capture is half your job, and comparing epochs is usually where the hours disappear (unless you're using some cool software like Leica Geosystems Cyclone 3R of course) It's research, not a finished workflow, and it's no replacement for measured data and off-the-shelf tools - but I feel it's heading somewhere very useful. And with splatting coming to Hexagon GeoCloud very soon, I am interested to see what we can achieve with them! Who's doing repeat captures on the same site? Happy Friday everyone!! For roughly twenty years I've been asked, "how do you know that's right?" - Now it's the AI's turn. The World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC) published a report this week, "Data to Decisions." It says we're moving from trusting data because we know how it was measured, to trusting models we can't easily look inside. Their idea for a fix? Provenance, metadata, governance and accountability. A proper paper trail... Honestly, that's what registration reports have always been: the boring bits that make data trustworthy. Some IMPORTANT Hexagon GeoCloud news! You can now store your data in Japan, Germany, England/Wales, or India If your organization has to keep its data in a specific country for legal, regulatory or contractual reasons, you can now store your uploaded files in four new storage regions: ✅ AP - Japan ✅ EU - Germany ✅ EU - England and Wales ✅ AP - India When you create a project, the new regions appear in the storage region list next to the existing ones. The files you upload to the project are stored in the region you choose. It's been a while coming, but we are excited to bring GeoCloud to even more users with this latest update! First thoughts when looking at this pic...? "My, what a handsome chap..." "He really should have worn nicer shoes..." "That hairline is creeping backwards at a rapid pace..." (come on, I'm 44... I'm doing ok!) OR, was it... "Wow, I did not know Gaussian Splats were being added to Hexagon GeoCloud" I mean, they are all right (😉), of course!! But yes, it might not have crossed your newsfeed yet (and with good reason - it's not yet released), but we will have SPLATS soon in GeoCloud. Initially, this will be directly from *.b2g files, and they make Leica Geosystems BLK2GO Data look insane by the way (see the pic for evidence of this!). With this, LiveLink for the new RTC Series and a whole plethora of new features coming in Q4, the platform just keeps getting better and better...
