To help enrich and lengthen the special relationship between people and their pets
About us
Work that matters, fueled by passion for pets! At Hill’s we have a purpose. Every day around the world, we transform the lives of millions of pet families through pioneering innovation, science-led nutrition and the best and brightest people. Did you know that the work we do today was originally inspired by Buddy, a guide dog who was suffering from kidney failure in the late 1930s? Dr. Mark Morris Sr. believed the illness was a result of poor nutrition, so he developed a new pet food to help Buddy live a longer, healthier life. That pet food was the forerunner of Hill’s Prescription Diet® k/d® Canine. Dr. Morris was a caring veterinarian, a visionary for clinical nutrition and the founder of Hill’s Pet Nutrition. We are proud to carry on his tradition of caring and his commitment to transforming lives through the highest-quality pet nutrition available. In fact, our mission is “to help enrich and lengthen the special relationships between people and their pets.” Hill's® Science Diet®, Prescription Diet® and Ideal Balance® brand pet foods are sold in more than 86 countries, with total annual sales of more than $2 billion. We share our core values of Caring, Global Teamwork and Continuous Improvement with our parent company, Colgate-Palmolive. Our support to homeless pets and shelters is a living, breathing example of our values, and we are an industry leader in providing pet food to shelter animals around the world. Our Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love program has donated more than $300 million worth of food to shelters and has helped more than 12 million pets find their forever home! As our feline companions live longer, understanding their cognitive health is more important than ever. That's why Hill’s Pet Nutrition is proud to share a comprehensive review, "𝘍𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯," recently published in the journal 𝘈𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘴 with authors Dr. Leslie Hancock and Allison McGrath. This paper explores what science currently says about the feline mind and investigates the vital link between nutrition and brain health as cats age. Here are a few key takeaways: • 𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧: Up to 50% of cats aged 15 and older experience behavioral signs of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS), a condition involving age-related changes in the brain. These signs can be subtle and are often dismissed as normal aging. • 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞: Proper nutrition is fundamental for cognitive development during growth and function during adulthood. This review explores how key nutrients with neuroprotective properties may help support the health of the aging feline brain. • 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐭-𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐫: The review also touches on emerging science, like the link between the gut microbiome and the brain (the brain-gut-microbiota axis), and its potential influence on feline cognition and behavior. By integrating research on feline behavior with our 75+ years of knowledge of pet nutrition, we can develop better strategies to improve the quality of life for aging cats and strengthen the special bond we share with them.
