We welcome the Council of the European Union's adoption of the European Parliament's position on the temporary derogation to the ePrivacy Directive. This renewal will restore legal certainty for online service providers to continue voluntarily detecting, reporting, and removing child sexual abuse material.   This is an important step for child protection. It allows companies that are already taking action to continue using proven technologies to identify abuse, report it to the relevant authorities, and help prevent the further spread of child sexual abuse material online. Without this legal certainty, there was a risk that these vital efforts would be reduced or stopped altogether.   However, this is only a temporary solution. Children need a long-term legislative framework that provides certainty for service providers, supports innovation in child protection technologies, and enables effective action against child sexual abuse online. The EU now has an opportunity to build on today's progress by delivering a permanent, future-proof legal framework that enables responsible detection, protects the rights of all users, and, above all, keeps children safe.   IWF urges EU policymakers to maintain this momentum and work towards the swift adoption of a comprehensive Child Sexual Abuse Regulation that provides lasting legal certainty on detection and strengthens Europe's response to online child sexual abuse.   #ChoosetoSeeThem #ChildSafetyOnline

Sexually coerced extortion, commonly known as “sextortion,” is a form of blackmail in which intimate, nude, or sexual images or videos are used to threaten or exploit an individual, often to demand additional imagery or money. Over the past three years, our analysts have assessed 748 reports featuring sexually coerced extortion. 96% of these reports have come directly to the IWF from children via the Report Remove service that we run in partnership with the NSPCC's Childline. It's the summer holidays. Children are at home, on their phones, on their tablets - online more than any other time of year. While they're scrolling, chatting and gaming, the threats they face are growing. Criminals are using AI to create abusive material from ordinary photos. Children are being groomed and extorted through the apps they use every day. And the commercial trade in child sexual abuse imagery is expanding. The IWF exists to fight back.
