It’s official! The technology and approach we have built over the past 2 years at LeakSignal is now published as a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Interagency Report (IR). These reports serve as background information for upcoming FIPS and Special Publications (SP) within NIST. “Unlike other data classification techniques that operate on data at rest, in-transit classification provides the added dimension of time as traffic is analyzed. When combining data classification with the time it was accessed or sent, sensitive data flows can be visualized and protected.” https://lnkd.in/eF-EmrAd This report spotlights Web Assembly (WASM) as the implementation method for data flow mapping. WASM and native Envoy/nginx modules are becoming a more preferred deployment point for our customers with WASM being extremely resilient and simple to deploy. We have also been working alongside engineers at Google to make native modules just as easy to deploy. With that said, the use cases around data flow observability and data flow protection are unlimited. There are massive savings in both time and money when applying data flow observability to existing infrastructure. From API Inventory/leakage to sensitive data leaking into log pipelines, data in-transit capabilities are a once-in-a-decade game changer for data and application security. In case you missed it, our contributions around data flow observability were also recently published in the PCI DSS Scoping and Segmentation Guidance for Modern Network Architectures. Although data in-transit is mentioned in multiple places throughout the document, here is an example of how it's used: “To fulfill the proxy pattern's intent of segmenting non-CDE assets, traffic passing through the proxy should not carry account data. This can be verified through data in-transit classification ensuring a clear separation of in-scope and out-of-scope systems.” https://lnkd.in/eszGqGB7 There’s no stopping this new capability and the benefits it can provide. We are extremely proud to be the pioneer bringing it to the market for our users, customers and the world.

💥 The latest PCI guidance officially includes data in-transit observability—a significant milestone for organizations working to secure sensitive data flows and understand segmentation within modern architectures. LeakSignal is honored to have contributed to this effort, collaborating with data security industry leaders from organizations like Block, Barclays, CVS Health, Ernst & Young, Capital One, Target, Marriott, and many more. Data In-Transit Monitoring: "Implement monitoring tools capable of classifying data in-transit. This will allow confirmation that not only is the traffic flowing according to policy, but that the data content itself adheres to compliance requirements and internal data handling protocols. It is a way to continuously ensure that sensitive data is only accessed and handled by authorized services" This guidance is designed to support merchants, service providers, and assessors, providing crucial background knowledge, actionable steps, and practical examples to to assist in defining PCI DSS scope and applying segmentation practices in modern network architectures. At LeakSignal, we remain focused on streamlining asset inventory, scoping, and segmentation through existing control points already deployed in customer environments. It took us a few days to recover, but we just wrapped up an unbelievable week in Vegas at Black Hat 2024! First off, we’re beyond honored to have been named runner-up in the Startup Spotlight competition, where our team had the chance to showcase our industry-leading technology. Don’t miss the Dark Reading feature (https://lnkd.in/dHs4aQFa) and stay tuned for a glimpse of our presentation. We also made our debut on the Black Hat show floor, courtesy of the Startup Spotlight. It was great to watch our engineers in-action, presenting to the constant flow of Black Hat attendees (pro tip: the serious prospects—or competitors—are always the ones with flipped badges 😉). Overall, our key takeaway from this year's conference is that Data Flow Governance is quickly becoming a top priority. With LLMs, serverless functions, and hybrid environments rapidly expanding, data in-transit classification along with asset inventory is now at the forefront of every CISO and security leaders mind. We want to give a big thank you to everyone who connected with us! These interactions with customers, partners, investors, and new industry friends are what make these conferences so rewarding and inspiring. #blackhat2024 #datasecurity #startupspotlight #cybersecurity
