The partial government shutdown and failure to pay TSA employees is having real economic effects on Americans, to the tune of many millions of dollars. Here's some simple math to show just how much. First, let's be clear – the problem is that time spent waiting in line for TSA screening is usually wasted. You can check your messages, sure, but there's a limit to how much work you can do on your phone. And your leisure time has value, too. What would you have been doing if you hadn't needed to arrive early at the airport? Probably something better than standing in line. If all you're doing is waiting, then valuable time is being taken away from you. So how much is your time worth? In 2025, TSA screened about 2.5 million people per day. Let's say 2 milllion of them were adults. What's an adult's time worth? A decent proxy is average hourly earnings, currently at $37.32 per hour in the private sector. This means every extra minute at an airport security checkpoint costs almost half a billion dollars per year ($37.32/60 x 2,000,000 x 365.25 = $454,371,000). An extra ten minutes for each passenger costs $4.5 billion! Some of this cost comes out of gross domestic product (if people are missing work), and the rest comes directly out of people's wellbeing (if they're missing leisure). The inability to enjoy those precious minutes is equivalent to being a few dollars poorer. Moreover, the annoyances of being in line – impatient kids, jostling customers, heavy backpacks – just add to the toll. TSA employees are suffering, too. It's not a particularly high-wage job, so the lack of a paycheck is probably putting families into financial straits. And this is just one aspect of the shutdown. Maybe members of Congress will get a taste of it themselves next time they get on a plane.... P.S.
