The Society of Research Software Engineering was founded on the belief that a world which relies on software must recognise the people who develop it. Our mission is to establish a research environment that recognises the vital role of software in research. We work to increase software skills across everyone in research, to promote collaboration between researchers and software experts, and to support the creation of an academic career path for Research Software Engineers.

🔴 We are happy to announce that the SSI has received funding for a fourth phase which will last from 2024 to 2028 and focus on environmental sustainability, EDIA in the research software community, and the rising interest in AI and ML. Phase 4 of the SSI received funding through the UK Research and Innovation Digital Research Infrastructure Programme and will be led by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). UKRI is continuing to help improve research software practices by providing further funding for the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI). The fourth phase of funding for the institute will be led by AHRC and will focus on: • environmental sustainability • equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the research software community • the rising interest in AI and machine learning The Software Sustainability Institute's mission is to transform research culture by establishing the principle that reliable, reproducible, and reusable software is necessary across all research disciplines. It achieves this by working with, and investing in, individuals and organisations from across the sector. The fourth phase of the SSI will be funded through the UKRI Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) programme. DRI supports critical improvements in digital services. The SSI is based at the universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, and Southampton. See the news section of our website for further information.
