Portfolio company Realta Fusion just raised $36M to bring zero-carbon fusion power to the grid by the 2030s. Their innovative tech is designed to deliver a scalable, clean energy solution with the potential to transform how the world is powered. 💡
It feels like just a short pulse ago that the WHAM fusion experiment launched at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Realta Fusion emerged from that project in 2022 with the goal of commercializing the magnetic mirror concept, raised seed financing in 2023, and fired our first plasma shot in 2024. Today, we announce the next major milestone on our pathway to commercial fusion energy: we have closed a $36 million Series A round to bring this dream even closer to reality. Led by new investor Future Ventures and returning investor Khosla Ventures, this funding will allow us to advance the magnetic mirror beyond a groundbreaking physics experiment and toward a rigorously validated and commercially viable fusion energy system that is as de-risked as you can get it in the lab before you actually go out and build it in the real world. While the work of building compact, scalable, modular fusion energy systems (or CoSMo systems, as we réaltaí call them) waits for no one, for a brief moment we pause to mark the culmination of 5 years of intense and uncompromising work and thank the countless individuals involved who have committed themselves to no less than recreating the power of the sun on planet Earth and the production of clean, reliable, and abundant energy for all humankind. And now, back to work.
