Appreciated talking with Jake Lingeman for this Newsweek story. If you know nothing about EV charging in the US, this is a good place to start: https://lnkd.in/eRU3RaMV

I had a great time at the 2nd annual New York Tech Summit earlier this week — thank you Crain's New York Business, Tech:NYC and Accenture for having me! It was fun opening the day chatting with Crain's Editor-in-Chief Cory Schouten about the huge EV shift we've seen in NYC over the last year, with Revel charging 10x the number of vehicles a day than we were in 2023. If you've heard me talk about the classic chicken and egg problem New York was facing, believe when I say that egg has now hatched. Things are about to get a whole lot better for EVs in the city.

Always interesting to see the path from idea to validate. And Frank Reig brought Revel through a journey to find (the sometimes elusive) product market fit.
One of the biggest challenges to the adoption of EVs is the lack of fast-charging stations. Revel, a company formally known for its fleet of rentable electric mopeds, is currently focused on transforming the EV charging landscape in urban areas. In our next episode of the #S2GPodcast, we hear from Frank Reig, Revel’s Co-Founder and CEO. In his conversation with S2G's Chuck Templeton, Frank speaks to the complexities of scaling energy infrastructure in cities, the importance of strategic alliances (especially with utilities and policymakers), the need to have a thorough understanding of the market opportunity, and what the future holds for the company. Days like yesterday are rare, but they’ll be happening a lot more at Revel. After more than 2 years of hard work, we opened our first fast charging station in Manhattan! It’s 10 fast chargers right off the FDR Drive on Pier 36, the first 24/7 station in the borough and the fastest in the city. Huge shout out to Revel’s infrastructure team, who are constantly solving new problems nobody else has done before. And also the team at Con Edison who worked with us hand-in-hand to bring power to this site. We closed the day with an awesome celebration uptown with our seed investor Maniv and friends at BlackRock, Uber, WEX and Kempower. Thank you Deputy Mayor Meera Joshi, NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission Commissioner Do, Senator Brian Kavanagh, ConEd's Dr. Britt Reichborn-Kjennerud, New York City Economic Development Corporation's Jonathan Schulhof and Kempower's Jed Routh for joining me to cut the ribbon. The next 12 months are big for Revel. We have 48 chargers coming to LGA and 60 coming to Maspeth, Queens, plus our first sites going live in the Bay Area in 2025. And much, much more. #ClimateWeekNYC

Opening this site was a great accomplishment for Revel and especially rewarding for me and the team after more than 3 challenging years of navigating a series of challenges unique to this site: 1. The site is on a pier so we could not trench and all our structural components needed to be finely engineered for compatibility with the substructure 2. The pier is ~10 feet below the 100 yr flood plain so all our electrical equipment and components are on a raised steel structure 3. The site is on city owned land and subleased through private lessor. The license agreement we came to with the private master tenant needed nearly a year of revisions with the city and EDC who own the land. Additionally, we had to go through a more complicated permit approval process. 4. The site is powered by 3 1000kva 208v vaulted transformers located in the street. Excavation work to install utility manholes and conduit hit several snags due to the history of the area. Also, power is at 208v so we needed to step it up to 480v through a massive step up transformer. In short, many different organizations/companies have been trying to install chargers here since 2018. Very proud that Revel and our charging team were the ones to finally get it done. https://lnkd.in/gyTDw-6V
