Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month! 🎉 At United Way of New York City, we celebrate the culture and contributions of our Latine community. In our 2023 Cost of Living report, we uncovered that 65% of Latine households earn less than what's needed to cover basic living expenses. This is why we’re deeply invested in changing these outcomes. Through our core impact areas—Health Equity, Justice and Opportunity, Food and Benefits Access, and Education—we work with Latine families in communities across the city through our local partners, breaking barriers and building opportunities together. On the next stop of our 2024 Backpack Drive, we teamed up with EY and the UWNYC Junior Board of Directors to supply backpacks for low-income NYC students! 🎒✏️✂️📓 Together we filled backpacks with the essential school supplies needed to help students start the school year prepared, and to help families struggling with the basic cost of living. We are incredibly grateful to EY and the Junior Board of Directors for helping address educational disparities and ensuring that every child in New York City has the tools needed for success. We’re excited to share an incredible fellowship program hosted by United Way of New York City’s Health Equity Unit. Back in January, UWNYC and Choose Healthy Life (CHL) met with the Columbia University’s Dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health to establish a groundbreaking 10-week fellowship for master's level students. Five outstanding students – Zara N., Samyukta Rao, Medine Sekeza, Tobechi Dimkpa, and Jazmyne Bullock – were selected to support the CHL churches and program. Under the guidance of our Health Equity leaders, they completed key projects, including a landscape analysis for CHL’s expansion into upstate New York, optimizing Health Navigator work plans, and enhancing outreach and engagement efforts. We celebrate our fellows and couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and hard work. #ChooseHealthyLife #HealthEquity #PublicHealth #YoungLeaders

We're so proud of our Project Director, Health Equity Veronica Torres on being selected to be a One Young World 2024 Delegate! One Young World is a global community of young leaders who gather annually to debate and create solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges. Delegates are selected from partner organizations or through scholarships and return as Ambassadors, equipped with the tools and global network to drive change in their communities. Delegates will join United Way CEO Angela F. Williams, JD, M.Div at #OYW24 later this September. Congratulations to Veronica and the other outstanding young leaders on this honor! #youngleaders #leaders #changemakers #ambassador
CEO with forward-looking lens | Visionary executive proven to implement strategic initiatives | Passionate advocate
I recently met with the 10 outstanding young leaders from across the United Way Network who will be joining me in Montreal for the 2024 One Young World Summit! So, what’s the mood amongst our Delegate Cohort going into #OYW24? “A dream come true,” “an honor,” and “empowering” — These are just a few of the ways that our Delegates describe what this opportunity means to them. This group (including me!) is buzzing with excitement: we're ready for four days of learning from one another, meeting with inspiring young leaders from around the world, and hearing from incredible speakers. Be on the lookout for updates from Canada beginning September 18.
