This morning, VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore, VFW Auxiliary President Lois Callahan and members of our Washington Office took part in #VeteransDay ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial, honoring our nation’s heroes by presenting wreaths at each site. Today and every day, the VFW proudly pays tribute to America’s veterans - past and present. Happy Veterans Day.

On #Veterans Day, we honor all those who served our nation in uniform, including the approximately 800,000 Americans who served alongside our NATO and Afghan partners in Afghanistan between October 2001 and August 2021. Congress mandated our Commission to conduct an independent, comprehensive, rigorous assessment of the 20-year war. To fulfill this mandate, we’ve engaged veterans of the war from the start, through interviews, hearings, roundtables, conferences, and our dedicated online portal at https://lnkd.in/gfQarpRz. We’re gratified so many veterans have shared their views on the realities the United States and our partners faced in the field. We’re committed to ensure our report reflects these ground truths. And the Afghanistan War Commission is also gratified for the opportunity to organize this critical dialogue with our nation’s Afghanistan War veterans. Most recently, we held a forum at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) national convention in Columbus, Ohio, in which we invited veterans to testify about their experiences. As one Oklahoma National Guardsman who spoke at the forum shared with us, “I want to say thank you for inviting us to share our Afghanistan War insights. I was a company commander in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012. I don’t know if anyone has ever asked me that before.” It is our hope that our research and recommendations will not only help prepare our nation for future conflicts, but also provide a semblance of closure and catharsis for veterans of the war. Jay Caputo, Mitch F.urman, Joseph Patrick Grehan, and Phil Rhoads were just some of the many #veterans from the Gus Scutari Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6394 in #Syosset to participate in honoring those who have fought for our country to defend the freedoms we have today.
