Even while generously making time to take photos with everyone who came out to support the opening, he was completely grounded and approachable. We ended up sharing a quick laugh over our mutual love for hot sauce, a few notes on baseball and our love for the sport, and the random coincidence that he also remembers of our families crossing paths years ago at a theater downtown in NYC. If you’re bragging about how fast your team is deploying AI agents, you’re probably just automating your own downfall. The most brutal leadership accountability I’ve ever seen didn’t come from a performance review. It came from a backup catcher. In my post last week about dugout leadership, Eric Yount (Lead Amateur Development Coach at the Kansas City Royals) dropped an absolute gem in the comments. He noted that a great dugout is an "incubator for holding teammates accountable and having them hold you to those same accountabilities." Read that second part again: “...and having them hold you to those same accountabilities.” That is the ultimate secret to authentic leadership. And it's exactly where average corporate leaders miss the mark. In most companies, accountability is a one-way street. It’s a top-down enforcement mechanism driven by sterile KPIs. It breeds compliance, but it kills commitment. The authentic executive operates on mutual accountability. They build a "clubhouse" where the standard applies to everyone (especially the person at the top). How do elite (authentic) leaders actually pull this off? - They grant upward permission. They look their team in the eye and say, "This is the standard. If you see me slipping from it, call me out." - They get in the dirt. When a quarter misses, they don't look for a scapegoat. They audit the process with their team, proving they manage human potential, not just spreadsheets. - They kill the "executive exemption." True trust is forged when the team sees the leader bound by the exact same rules and work ethic as everyone else. When you have the grit (and the confidence) to let your team hold you accountable, the corporate dynamic flips. Micro-management dies because the team protects the standard. Blind spots vanish because your people feel safe enough to tell you a strategy is bleeding before it hits the boardroom. As Eric beautifully put it: "Forged through this path…you can lead anybody anywhere!" Average corporate leaders manage structures. Authentic leaders manage trust. Never book an American Airlines itinerary that involves a partner connection. Living in the DFW area, I fly American Airlines regularly. I’m a Platinum Pro elite status member and regularly purchase first-class tickets. I’ve learned to live with the standard delays, late arrivals, and systemic inefficiencies. It’s part of the tax we pay. But what my wife and I just experienced on our vacation to Hawaii is a masterclass in bureaucratic process failure. We booked a DFW ➔ Honolulu (HNL) ➔ Kona (KOA) itinerary through AA. The leg from HNL to Kona was with their partner, Hawaiian Airlines. We had a comfortable 2+ hour connection window. Then, the DFW dominoes started falling: - A 15-min delay rolled into multiple crew delays. - A "wet boarding bridge" from a roof leak caused more rolling 15-min delays. - We finally taxied out after a 1.5-hour delay... only to stop on the tarmac. - A technical failure forced the co-pilot to walk to the back to "reboot something." It failed. We taxied back to the gate and sat trapped on the plane for another 45 min until it was fixed. By the time the wheels left the ground, our connection was impossible. This is where a bad travel day turned into an absolute horror story. Because our connecting flight was with a partner airline, AA's backend systems completely crippled our trip. Despite multiple Hawaiian Airlines flights leaving later that same day, AA booked us on a flight for noon the next day. The reason? AA staff informed us that their automated rebooking protocol for partner airlines defaults to a window at least 24 hours after the original flight. It got worse: Hostage Luggage: Our bags were kept in transit. We were forced to spend the night at an HNL airport hotel with no suitcases, buying emergency clothes at a local shop. Zero Visibility: The next morning, we spent 2 hours on the phone with AA trying to get on an earlier flight. The agents literally could not see the available inventory on their own partner's system. The Contract Lock: Hawaiian Airlines generously tried to help us by putting us on standby for a flight 4 hours earlier. They gave us tickets. But when we went to board, the scanners rejected them. Why? Because American Airlines’ system refused to release the itinerary control to the partner airline. We lost 1.5 days of our hard-earned Hawaii vacation over a 40-minute inter-island flight, entirely due to broken corporate processes. Lately, I’ve been transitioning to private charters, but occasionally still use commercial airlines for longer hauls. If this is how AA treats its highest-tier premium customers, I can’t imagine how nightmarish it is for everyone else. My #1 rule moving forward: If you absolutely must fly AA, never, under any circumstances, book a connecting flight that relies on a partner airline.
