What’s even more remarkable is learning that this initiative has been in the works for years—championed by Governor Abbott over the past four years, and even envisioned more than a decade ago. It’s truly inspiring to see what can be accomplished with leadership that combines vision and belief with the will and ability to execute. This milestone is not just about Texas, but about what’s possible when bold ideas meet perseverance.

Tianyi Joe Zhu shared thisAll good things eventually come to an end, and so does my time with the Chinese Mutual Aid Association. For the past eight years, I’ve had the honor of serving as a board member, witnessing firsthand the incredible growth of CMAA and the impact it has made on our community. This past year has brought its share of challenges—with three board resignations and the departure of our executive director—it became clear that it’s time for me to dedicate my energy elsewhere. Still, I leave with immense pride in the work we accomplished and the lives we touched. I’ll truly miss those moments at the gala where I pushed guests to raise their paddles a little higher, and I’ll always cherish the friendships I built with so many dedicated board members along the way. Thank you to everyone who made this chapter so meaningful. I wish the best of luck to CMAA, even as I turn the page to new opportunities.

Today I want to highlight someone who has been a mentor and advisor to me since 2011: Sam Yagan Sam co-founded OkCupid, later ran Match Group as CEO, and has been a venture partner. He also served as an independent director at my startup, which is where I got a front row seat to how he thinks. Two lessons stuck with me. 1.. Turn data into a value-added feedback loop. OkCupid did not just use data in the background to match people. It made data analysis the core of its marketing engine and user experience. Those famous posts breaking down user behavior and match dynamics were a growth hook and a competitive moat at the same time. Most companies sit on data. Sam taught me to turn data into a story. 2.. Give back to the tech community. Beyond his own ventures, Sam's leadership at Techstars Chicago showed me what it looks like to invest in your community and the founders around you. Supporting adjacent founders is a win-win opportunity. It compounds into asymmetric deal flow, stronger talent networks, and long-term investing leverage. Mentorship is a loop, too. What Sam taught me, I try to pass along.

I recently came across this chart showing how many iconic founding teams first met. What stood out to me wasn’t the schools or companies. It was this: ~2/3 of these founders knew each other before they ever built anything together. Friendships. Roommates. Classmates. Former colleagues. People who had already gone through hard things together. It made me think about the origin story of Conductive Ventures. Long before Paul Yeh and I co-founded the firm, we were roommates in San Francisco working brutal investment banking hours together. Kevin Chou brought us all together. The rest is history. What mattered wasn’t just proximity. It was time. Paul and I saw each other through highs, lows, uncertainty, stress, career changes, wins, disappointments…all before we ever decided to build a firm together. That foundation matters. Because partnerships are strange organizational structures. The best ones aren’t 50/50. They’re 100/100. Trust isn’t created during the good times. It’s earned slowly through consistency during the hard times. And honestly, when I look at this chart, I’m not surprised at all. When you choose a co-founder, you’re really choosing the person you want next to you when things don’t go according to plan. I’ve been in venture capital since 2004. And after all these years, this is the most fun chapter of my career because Paul and I aren’t just doing deals together. We’re building something together.
