What does it take to design a modern multipurpose arena so it fits a complicated site plan, drives community engagement, supports a main sports tenant and, oh yeah, adheres to challenging funding models? HOK's Bill Johnson, FAIA, offers insights in a lively and honest Q&A with Flames Nation about the design evolution of Calgary's Scotia Place. "When the price of these buildings continued to get more and more expensive, the buildings had to take on a more multipurpose program because you really can’t justify the cost of the venues for just a single tenant," says Bill. "The problem with doing anything multipurpose is there’s an initial first cost to that. It’s not as simple. It’s not as straightforward. For a long time, owners were reluctant to spend the money to plan in flexibility and resiliency into the projects, but now they’re listening to us. They’re really doing it."
