🚀 The 100 Women Founders to Watch are launching disruptive new businesses, driving climate action, accelerating AI, innovating across 20+ industries from femtech to space tech, and they’ve raised more than $1.1b between them. (...) But, for many founders who identify as women, there are still significant challenges when it comes to raising investment. Startups founded or co-founded by women raise just 10% of total VC funding in Europe, and women-only founded startups raise just 2% of funding in the US. Companies led by Black women receive less than 1%. This is crazy when you consider that 1 in 6 women globally intend to start a business, compared with 1 in 5 men, and that women are the primary consumers of many tech-based products – women control more than $30t in consumer spending, and that number is expected to increase to $40t by 2030! In this report, published in partnership with Institut auf dem Rosenberg, we explore how to increase representation and move more investor money to women founders. Through a series of exclusive interviews, unicorn founders share their startup stories and advice for budding women entrepreneurs, top VC investors discuss investment trends and how to raise, and we conclude with our list of 100 of the world’s most promising women tech founders, from pre-Seed to Series A stage. The goal of the 100 Women Founders to Watch list is to shine a light on 100 of the most exceptional women founders blazing a trail in the tech industry across three of the key markets – the UK & Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia. This is not a definitive list or ranking of any kind, and we know that there are many exceptional founders who we will have missed. In 2023, the proportion of U.S. venture funding going to startups with at least one female founder reached a new peak at 15% (thanks, AI). But the funding to female-only founded companies has been flat since 2015 at 2-3%. Here's how we do better: train women founders to get better at pitching. Right where the business metrics start to matter, at Series A. Yup, people start looking at them that early. Magic occurs when something that we previously believed to be impossible happens. I would have never become a construction engineer and I would have never become a founder had I not had role models like Karen Hansen (a builder) and Julia Hartz (a founder). I looked at them and thought, “I’d like to do that too.” On International Women’s Day, I’m sending love to all the founders who have inspired and helped me along the way: Maria Alegre, Andrea Barrica, Vlada Bortnik (she/her), Ooshma Garg, Holly Liu, Neha Narkhede, Sarah Nahm, Kanjun Qiu, Joanna Riley, Meaghan Rose, and Jessica Scorpio The trajectory of funding going to women is moving in the right direction: Female-founded companies accounted for 22.8% of 2023 total VC deal value. It was in the low single digits in 2020. So we have to celebrate that.  But there's more work to do. At firms with more than $50 million in assets under management, Allie Garfinkle today reports that 82.6% of decision-makers are men according to PitchBook. This is obviously not acceptable. Note to VC firms: Your female partners, such as Ching-Yu H., Jennifer Wolf, Nina Achadjian, Jess Lee, Jessica Livingston, Kat Mañalac, Surbhi Sarna, bring invaluable perspectives to all founders and the wider ecosystem. If we believe that hard work, intelligence, talent and leadership are not dependent on gender — and there’s no reason to believe otherwise — then our world is missing out on many hardworking, self-identifying women who can improve it.
