    How to Get REAL Power BI Projects (And Stand Out from the Crowd) I get this question all the time. "How do I find real-world Power BI projects?" Most people grab a random dataset, build a dashboard, and call it a ‘project.’ But that’s not a real project. A real project is messy. A real project has business impact. A real project forces you to solve real problems. So, how do you find such projects? And how do you execute them to stand out? 1️⃣ Find the Right Business Forget sample datasets. Look for real businesses—gyms, restaurants, grocery stores, schools. They collect data but often don’t know how to use it. 🔹 Their data is digital (not just on paper). 🔹 They track attendance, sales, or payments. 🔹 They have an unsolved problem. 2️⃣ Make an Offer They Can’t Refuse ✖ Bad Pitch: "I’m a student. Can I make a dashboard for you?" ✔ Good Pitch: "I noticed many gym members stop coming after a few months. I can analyze your attendance data to improve retention." How to pitch better: → Identify a specific problem. → Make it about them, not you. → Offer it for free (ask for a testimonial). 3️⃣ Solve the Problem, Not Just Build a Dashboard 🔸 Set Clear Expectations → What data do you need? → How often will you check in? → What does success look like? 🔸 Go Beyond Visuals → Gym → Identify at-risk members & suggest a follow-up strategy. → Restaurant → Find top-selling dishes & optimize the menu. → School → Automate attendance tracking. 🔸 Make It Easy to Use → Keep visuals simple & actionable. → Provide a short summary of insights. → Record a quick walkthrough video. 4️⃣ Show the Solution to the Business Most people fail here. ✔ Walk them through the results. Show them what to focus on. ✔ Connect insights to their business goals. ✔ Make it effortless to use. Your job is not to impress them with Power BI. Your job is to make their business better. 5️⃣ Showcase the Project to Employers 🔸 Tell the Story, Not Just the Dashboard ✖ “I built a Power BI dashboard analyzing sales data.” ✔ “I helped a restaurant find its top 20% dishes driving 80% of revenue. This cut costs & increased profits.” 🔸 Make Your Work Easy to Share → Post it on LinkedIn, GitHub, or a personal website. → Show a before & after comparison. → Get a testimonial from the business owner. Why This Works Most job seekers build dashboards from clean datasets. But real-world projects are different. ✔ You work with messy data. ✔ You solve real business problems. ✔ You develop consulting & communication skills.     If you’re an aspiring ML or AI engineer, here are 5 projects you can build right now to get your hands dirty with the latest tools, and actually understand how things work end-to-end 👇🏽 🛠️ 1. Build an ML Pipeline from Scratch Project: Predict which students are at risk of dropping out → Pull attendance + grades → clean in Pandas/Polars → Train with LightGBM → track with MLflow → Deploy via FastAPI + Docker → push to AWS Lambda → Set up CI/CD with GitHub Actions 💡 This is a full ML lifecycle in one project. 💬 2. Build a RAG Chatbot Project: A chatbot that answers questions from course notes → Chunk + embed using LlamaIndex / Cohere / VoyageAI → Store in Weaviate or FAISS → Use an open-source LLM like Mistral or Qwen → UI in Gradio or Streamlit 💡 Great hands-on intro to how GenAI apps actually work. 🧠 3. Fine-Tune an LLM for a Domain Project: A medical or finance assistant → Collect PubMed papers or SEC filings → Fine-tune with QLoRA/DPO → Start with Mistral or DeepSeek Coder → Evaluate on factuality + accuracy → Deploy with Modal or Fireworks AI 💡 Helps you go deeper into foundation model adaptation. 🚨 4.     Having a strong portfolio is one of the best ways to stand out when applying for a Data Analyst role. But it’s important to choose the right projects that show your skills and creativity. Here’s how you can create meaningful projects:- Don’t work on the same old ideas like simple sales dashboards or stock price analysis. These projects are very common and don’t make you stand out. Instead, try to pick unique and interesting topics that recruiters haven’t seen before. Think about real problems faced by companies. For example, mobility companies like Uber, Ola, or Rapido face issues where some drivers ask customers to cancel rides so they can complete trips offline. This leads to revenue loss for the company. You can take this as example to create a project to analyze this problem, quantify the losses, and suggest solutions. Use multiple tools in a single project to show your versatility. For example, you can use SQL to clean and organize data, Python to analyze it, and Power BI to create dashboards. This shows you can handle an entire process from start to finish. Focus on projects that solve real business problems like reducing customer churn, optimizing marketing budgets, or segmenting customers into different groups. These projects show that you understand how businesses operate and how data can make an impact. Explain how you thought through the problem when you present your project. For example, if you analyzed driver cancellations, explain how you broke the problem into smaller parts, analyzed the data, and came up with solutions. This helps others see your problem-solving approach. Combine multiple related problems into one project to make it more impactful. For example, you could analyze driver cancellations, identify peak times for offline completions, and create a dashboard to monitor revenue loss. Combining ideas makes your project more comprehensive and impressive. Try to find data sets that aren’t commonly used. Instead of downloading the same datasets everyone uses, explore platforms like Kaggle or open data portals, or even create your own data. This will make your projects look fresh and unique. Always share clear and actionable results in your projects. For example, if you worked on driver cancellations, suggest ways to reduce them, like adjusting incentives or monitoring systems. Finish your project with a clear and engaging dashboard to show your findings. By working on unique and meaningful projects, you can show your skills, creativity, and ability to solve real problems.     Last month, I was mentoring a final-year engineering student who said: “Didi, mera resume toh blank hai, internships nahi mili, aur placements mein toh sirf CGPA dekhte hain na?” I asked him to show me what he had done. He hesitated and said, “Kuch YouTube tutorials se chhoti moti cheezein banayi thi…” But when I dug deeper, I found gold. ✅ He built a weather app using APIs. ✅ Tried making a budget tracker for his family. ✅ Attempted an ML model for crop prediction. All self-initiated. No certificates. No internships. I told him: “You must add these projects in your blank resume. Aur agar sahi tarike se dikhaye jaaye, toh yeh hi tumhara biggest strength ban sakta hai.” We added those to his resume, wrote crisp one-liners: 📌 Built a weather forecast web app using OpenWeather API – used by 50+ users weekly 📌 Created a budget management tool for household tracking – reduced manual expense logging by 80% Guess what? He cracked a remote internship in USA based finance startup in just 3 weeks.     STOP using the Titanic dataset if you want to get hired. Most Data projects fail because of one thing: They use fake data. Not bad SQL. Not bad Python. Not bad dashboards. Just boring datasets that don’t feel real. Everyone builds the same projects with: → Netflix CSV → Titanic dataset → Superstore dashboard But real companies don’t work like that. They work with APIs. There is a GitHub repo with 433k+ stars that you can use to get real-world data for your projects. It’s called Public APIs. You can find APIs for: → Books, Movies → Weather, News → Finance, Crypto and many more! Many APIs include the key details you need to use them: → Category → Description → CORS status → Documentation → Auth requirements This is a goldmine for Data projects. STOP building dashboards with a static CSV… You can build: → A crypto prices tracker → A stock market dashboard → A weather analytics pipeline → A sports analytics dashboard → A currency exchange monitor In real-world data projects, you don't work with a perfect and clean CSV file. You usually need to: → Read API documentation → Handle authentication → Extract JSON data → Flatten nested structures → Load it into a database → Schedule the pipeline → Transform the data → Build useful analytics on top Build something real.     Dear MBA Class of 2027 - Stop Sending Resumes. Start Sending Links. That’s how I cracked my internship. While batchmates were polishing buzzwords, I was polishing Power BI visuals. While others pitched “cross-functional synergy”, I built a working currency converter app in Excel. I’m not a core techie. Not a pure management type either. I sit in that powerful middle lane -> techno-functional. So I took a different route: Built few real-world projects: 1) Mandi Price Tracker App - fetches daily prices from multiple agricultural markets via REST APIs 2) Excel Scenario Simulator - runs 8 business scenarios in parallel with dynamic inputs 3) Power BI Dashboard - visualizes pan-India Clean Energy metrics using live REST API data 4) Monte Carlo Simulator - models risk & return for an 8-stock equity portfolio in Excel Then I did this: -Created a personal website -Links to live dashboards -Gave video demos over Zoom calls Recruiter’s first line: “This is refreshing. Let’s skip the usual.” Two weeks later, internship in hand. -- MBA Class of 2027 - here’s the playbook if you’re targeting techno-functional roles: 1) Don't just say “I know tools” - show business thinking through them 2) Skip fluff. Build lean, relevant, real-world solutions 3) Make your portfolio easy to click, demo-ready, and story-rich Forget big words. Be demo-ready. Be impressive in 10 seconds or less.
