Shine Runners mode in Palm Shore in Mario Kart DS
The Shine Runners mode being played at Palm Shore

Shine Runners is a battle mode found only in Mario Kart DS. In this mode, nine Shine Sprites are placed around a battle course. The goal is to get more Shine Sprites than the opponents. Getting hit by items causes the player to lose a Shine Sprite. After a timer counts down from sixty seconds, the drivers with the fewest Shine Sprites get eliminated. Afterwards, the timer resets to thirty seconds and begins counting down again. The process then repeats with thirty second intervals until one driver remains. If everyone has the same number of Shine Sprites, no one is removed.
