Super Mario Bros. Special levels

World 4-3 is the third level of World 4 in Super Mario Bros. Special. It is an athletic level set atop Mushroom Platforms, with a variety of Lifts.

Layout[edit]

The level starts with Mario on ground in front of a pair of a Mushroom Platforms, the right one with a Red Koopa Troopa standing atop it. To the right is another pair of Mushroom Platforms, the left one with two Little Goombas atop it, before a large gap between one final Mushroom Platform beside a Flimsy Lift. After the Flimsy Lift is a pair of Scale Lifts, which leads to another, thinner Mushroom Platform. Beside this Mushroom Platform is a vertical Lift, which leads to a wide Mushroom Platform with three ? Blocks, one of which houses a power-up, right beside a horizontal lift. Across this Horizontal Lift is another Mushroom Platform, which leads to a downward staircase of Mushroom Platforms, with each step having a Red Koopa Troopa on top of it. Beside this is a Scale Lift with a Mushroom Platform between it, which leads to a pair of Mushroom Platforms. Mario must break this Scale Lift, otherwise a Flimsy Lift further into the level will not spawn due to a glitch, and Mario will have to die.

Above the lower Mushroom Platform, beneath the cap of the higher Mushroom Platform, is a Hidden Block which contains a single coin. To the right of the pair of Mushroom Platforms are two Flimsy Lifts with a large gap between them, which lead to a wide Mushroom Platform that leads to a pair of pipes with Piranha Plants in them, separated by a pit with a thin vertical Lift between them and a Brick Block above a pit. Inside the Brick Block is a Vine that leads to a secret area made of Hard Blocks that contains Coins, Cloud Blocks, Horsetails, and two Warp Pipes. The pipes do not lead anywhere, so Mario will be trapped in this area until time runs out. If Mario ignores this vine, he will proceed to a staircase made of Mushroom Platforms that has a pair of Barrels at the top, leading to the flagpole.

According to course designer Ichirou Sakurada, the secret area trap is an unintentional bug, as map data shows that the exit pipe is intended to take Mario to the pipe underneath the Mushroom Platforms leading to the flagpole, where underneath the fourth tallest Mushroom Platform's cap is a Hidden Block containing a 1-Up Mushroom.[1]
