Rain
Rainfall amounts were less than normal for much of the country, though rainfall was close to or slightly above average in the northwest and midlands. It was wettest near west and northwest coasts with 36.2mm recorded at Belmullet, Co. Mayo (112% of average). It was much drier along south and southeast coasts with 4.6mm recorded at Roche's Point, Co. Cork (19% of average). It will be unsettled over the next seven days with frequent spells of rain and showers. Rainfall is forecast to be above average nationwide, with most areas forecast to receive two or three times the normal amount of rain for this time of year.
Temperatures
It was cooler than normal for most over the past week. Mean air temperatures ranged between 8.2 and 10.7 degrees, which is generally between normal and 1 degree below normal. Soil temperatures are generally near or above normal, ranging from 8.4 to 11.8 degrees. It will be milder over the next seven days and temperatures will increase to 2 or 3 degrees above normal, with forecast values between 10 and 13 degrees. Soil temperatures will remain similar.
Sunshine
Sunshine amounts were above normal across much of the country during the past week, the exception being areas near the west and northwest coast. It was brightest in the southeast with 32.4 hours of sunshine recorded at Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford (162% of average). It was dullest in the north with 14.3 hours of sunshine recorded at Malin Head, Co. Donegal (84% of average). The weather in the coming week will be very unsettled, so sunshine amounts will likely be below normal.
Drying Conditions
Drying conditions will be generally poor over the next seven days due to frequent spells of rain and showers.
Spraying
Spraying opportunities will be very limited due to rain, showers and strong winds.
Field Conditions
Most soils are saturated or waterlogged at the moment, although some well and moderately drained soils in the south and southeast are drier with soil moisture deficits (SMDs) of 1 to 5mm. All soils will deteriorate during the next week due to unsettled weather and high amounts of precipitation. All well and moderately drained soils will be saturated and poorly drained soils will be waterlogged.
