Juvederm Dermal Filler
Juvederm® injectable filler is one of the most popular dermal fillers in the United States. Juvederm products are available to restore volume and treat wrinkles, lines, and facial folds across different face areas. Natural aging and sun exposure can lead to visible signs of aging, causing us to look older than we are. Patients can now experience pan-facial rejuvenation without invasive plastic surgery thanks to dermal fillers like Juvederm. As one of the first doctors in New York to incorporate Juvederm injections, Dr. Green was an early adopter of this filler and has treated thousands of happy patients in her private Upper East Side dermatology office.
The Juvederm collection contains several uniquely formulated hyaluronic fillers that can be used on all patients with fine lines and deep wrinkles, regardless of skin type. Juvederm injectables are derived from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar complex in the skin that keeps the skin hydrated and plump. As we age, our bodies decrease the production of hyaluronic acid, and we cannot replace what is lost. By injecting a sophisticated hyaluronic acid filler, such as Juvederm, Dr. Green can replace facial volume loss, enhance facial features and contours, and restore a more youthful appearance. Juvederm injections are an excellent alternative to plastic surgery, helping patients achieve patients with smoother, rejuvenated skin with little to no downtime or side effects, especially when performed by an expert injector like Dr. Michele Green.
Dr. Michele Green is an internationally renowned board-certified dermatologist with over two and a half decades of experience providing some of the world’s most discerning individuals with the best cosmetic treatment options, including Juvederm injections. She is consistently identified as one of NYC’s best dermatologists by Super Doctors, Castle Connolly, and New York Magazine for her dedication to her patients and expertise. Dr. Green takes a holistic approach and embraces a “less-is-more philosophy” regarding facial rejuvenation, customizing each patient’s treatment plan best to suit their skin concerns and aesthetic goals. When you consult with Dr. Green at her private dermatology office in Manhattan’s Upper East Side neighborhood, she will work with you to create a personalized plan for achieving natural-looking, long-lasting, optimal results.
What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is a smooth injectable gel injected into the skin’s mid to deep dermal layer. Each Juvederm dermal filler has unique properties and is targeted to treat different body areas to provide various cosmetic treatment options. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that restores the body’s natural hyaluronic acid- when injected into deep facial wrinkles, creases, and folds, Juvederm adds volume and fullness and enhances the skin’s moisture content. Juvederm products are created with Vycross Technology, a special proprietary technology that cross-links hyaluronic acid molecules to create a smoother gel filler. Juvederm Ultra Plus XC was the “original” dermal filler developed to treat these deeper lines and wrinkles in the face. Since then, numerous Juvederm products have been created, including Juvederm Vollure XC, Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm Volite, Juvederm Volux, Skinvive, and Juvederm Ultra XC. Each Juvederm injectable was designed with a unique formulation to treat different face areas and types of volume loss or facial wrinkles. Dr. Green is an Allergan Platinum injector and was among the first dermatologists in NYC to offer Juvederm injections for cosmetic enhancement and rejuvenation.
Who makes Juvederm?
The Juvederm collection of fillers is made by the pharmaceutical company Allergan Aesthetics. Allergan also makes Botox the gold standard injectable for reducing dynamic fine lines and wrinkles. Many patients use Juvederm and Botox in the same treatment session to achieve pan-facial rejuvenation results.
Is Juvederm FDA approved?
Yes! The Juvederm collection is approved as an anti-aging treatment in various treatment areas. Juvederm was first FDA-approved in 2006, and since then, many other types of Juvederm filler have followed suit. Juvederm Volbella is FDA-approved to treat hollows under the eyes, Juvederm Vollure is FDA-approved to erase fine lines and wrinkles on the face, Juvederm Ultra XC is approved for lip augmentation, and Juvederm Voluma has been FDA-approved to treat volume-loss in the midface. The newest Juvederm to be approved is Juvederm Voluma XC, which was FDA-approved in early August of 2022 for jawline enhancement.

What is SkinVive by Juvederm?
SkinVive is a unique Juvederm filler that is FDA-approved for improving hydration and smoothness in the cheeks. SkinVive is formulated with hyaluronic acid microdroplets that help the skin retain natural moisture and softness. Which Juvederm is best for cheeks?
Juvederm Voluma was FDA-approved in 2013 for injections in the cheek and malar areas. Dr. Michele Green is one of the largest users of Juvederm Voluma in NYC and considers it the ideal dermal filler to restore lost collagen in the cheek area. Volume loss in the midface is a chief concern of many of her NYC patients, and Juvederm Voluma XC is the ideal way to replenish this lost volume and improve facial sagging. The sagging in the jowls and lower face are cosmetically enhanced by lifting the cheeks and restoring a youthful appearance, resulting in a nonsurgical facelift. Since most patients do not want to undergo invasive cosmetic surgery with a plastic surgeon, Juvederm Voluma offers an effective and elegant way to look younger without plastic surgery. Juvederm Voluma can replace other volume areas in the face besides the cheeks, including the nasolabial folds, chin, jawline, and temples. Additionally, Juvederm Voluma can treat volume and collagen loss from depressed acne scars.
Which Juvederm is best for jowls?
Juvederm Ultra Plus or Juvederm Volux can be injected around the jawline to correct sagging jowls and restore a youthful appearance. Adding volume with Juvederm fillers can improve the jawline’s shape and structure with long-lasting results. Additionally, some patients can benefit from injections of Juvederm Voluma into the cheeks, which will lift the lower face to reduce the appearance of sagging jowls. Since the neck and jawline are important areas of facial rejuvenation, many patients combine injectable fillers with fat reduction or skin tightening procedures to have a more defined jawline.
Which Juvederm is best for chin enhancement?
A critical area of facial enhancement that has been previously neglected is the chin area. In the Spring of 2020, Juvederm Voluma was FDA-approved to treat not only the cheek area but also the chin area. A weak chin can be due to several factors, including genetics, age, and gravity. As we age, the combination of collagen loss and gravity, the lower face, including the chin, jawline, and jowls, appear to sag. When injected into the chin, Juvederm Voluma can help achieve symmetry of the lower face and create a liquid chin lift that appears smooth and natural. If there is submental fat under the chin, treating with Kybella injections to dissolve unwanted fat will remove the “double chin” and improve the overall appearance of the chin and jawline.

Which Juvederm is best for under the eye area?
Many patients are troubled by dark circles and facial hollows. This combination makes one look tired and older than their age. Fortunately, under-eye hollows and dark circles can be corrected with dermal fillers injected directly into the under-eye (tear trough) area. Juvederm Volbella is designed to treat this delicate under-eye area due to its thin, flexible consistency. The best patients for dermal fillers in the tear trough area have under-eye hollows without an excessive amount of skin laxity. Patients with a large degree of excess skin or herniated fat may not be good candidates for this treatment.
What Juvederm is best for lips?
Lip augmentation has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in dermatology. The treatment of the lips is not just for lip enhancement but to create symmetry in uneven lips and reshape and contour the lips. Juvederm Ultra XC is excellent for providing volume and symmetry to the lips, with results that hold for up to one year. Additionally, a large part of cosmetically treating the lips is treating the visible signs of aging around the lips and the vertical lines above and below the lips. These perioral lines are referred to as “smoker’s lines,” but the lines are a result of age, smoking, and the damaging effects of the sun. Juvederm Volbella XC was specifically developed to treat these vertical lip lines. Juvederm Volbella adds subtle volume and smooths the appearance of these vertical lip lines for up to one year.
What Juvederm is best for wrinkles?
The best Juvederm product for wrinkles will depend on the area of the face they are located. Nasolabial folds, or smile lines, are one of the first areas in the face to experience volume loss. Juvederm Ultra Plus was made to smooth deep lines, creases, and the lines that extend down the mouth to the oral commissures, the marionette lines. Juvederm Vollure was also developed to restore volume in these “parentheses lines” with long-lasting, natural-looking results. Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, known as perioral lines, can be treated with Juvederm Volbella. Patients can turn to Juvederm Voluma for wrinkles around the cheeks for facial rejuvenation.

Can you achieve a liquid facelift with the Juvederm collection of fillers?
Yes! Juvederm dermal fillers can be combined to create a liquid facelift. Many patients prefer a liquid facelift over plastic surgery due to its ease, affordability, and lack of long recovery times and adverse side effects. As the chin, cheeks, jowls, and nasolabial folds can all develop fine lines, wrinkles, and volume loss, Dr. Green can employ multiple Juvederm fillers to offer pan-facial rejuvenation. Through the art of a liquid facelift, many of Dr. Green’s NYC patients can avoid having invasive plastic surgery.
Am I a candidate for Juvederm dermal fillers?
The best candidates for Juvederm filler treatments are patients over 21 who have good mental and physical health and want to treat volume loss and moderate wrinkles. Patients should not be pregnant or breastfeeding, as safety has not yet been established. If you have a history of severe allergic reactions, allergy to gram-positive bacterial proteins used to make hyaluronic acid, or allergy to lidocaine, you may not be suitable for Juvederm treatment. Any bleeding disorders or medications that interfere with clotting and affect bleeding should be discussed with Dr. Green before treatment.
What is the process of Juvederm injections?
The first step is consulting with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michele Green at her private office in Manhattan’s Upper East Side neighborhood. During your consultation, Dr. Green will collect a thorough medical history, review your skincare regimen and any previous cosmetic treatments you may have had, and physically assess your skin condition. Dr. Green will select the Juvederm dermal filler best suited to your needs and goals. Photographs of the treatment areas will be taken and stored in your private medical record to enhance your discussion and track future progress. Depending on your preference and time allowance, Juvederm injections may be performed on the same day as your consultation or scheduled for a later date.
Before your Juvederm dermal filler procedure, avoid taking any blood thinners, including medications (Coumadin, Warfarin), NSAIDS (Aleve, Aspirin, Motrin), herbal supplements (St. John’s Wart), or vitamins (fish oil, vitamin E) for at least one week to minimize bruising. Dr. Green recommends patients prone to bruising take Arnika herbal supplements for several days before the procedure to prevent bruising and help heal bruises faster.
On the day of your Juvederm injections, a topical numbing cream should be applied to the entire treatment area one hour before the appointment. Once you arrive at Dr. Green’s office, the numbing cream will be removed and the skin sterilized. The Juvederm fillers used by Dr. Green are also compounded with lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to make the experience quite comfortable. Dr. Green will artfully perform the Juvederm injections in the designated treatment areas. After the injections, the treatment sites will be cleaned, and ice packs will be applied to the treated areas of the face to minimize any potential swelling. Patients may be encouraged to return to Dr. Green’s office two weeks later so that she can evaluate the results and discuss any needed touch-ups that may be required.

What is the aftercare from Juvederm injections?
After the Juvederm injections, patients should continue avoiding blood thinners such as Coumadin, Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, and any vitamins or herbal supplements for one week to reduce the risk of bruising. Patients should also continue taking Arnica supplements for three to four days. Refraining from strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours following dermal filler injections is recommended to avoid swelling near the injection sites. For this reason, avoiding steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs, and very hot showers is also recommended. Additionally, patients should refrain from smoking, as smoking thins the skin, reduces the amount of collagen in the skin, affects the longevity of hyaluronic acid injections, and delays healing. When you have Juvederm injections with Dr. Green, you will receive all the pertinent aftercare information required to achieve and maintain ideal results.
