Who Am I and How I Came to Appreciate Mushrooms

I have always been fascinated with nature. Even the weird stuff. But, my foray into foraging didn’t start until 10 years ago when I found a local expert who would take me mushroom hunting.

Note: This site focuses on North American mushroom species because that is where I am located. Mushrooms vary greatly across regions, so even on this continent there is often a wide variance. It’s best to find a guide specific to your neck of the world.

I wanted to learn much earlier, but also wanted to be sure I had someone trustworthy to help me get started. Mushroom identification is a complicated adventure! And, one that doesn’t tolerate many mistakes.

Since those early days, this minor interest turned into a passion that goes way beyond the initial edible species I learned. Mushroom hunting isn’t just about what species I can eat; I am far more interested in mushroom ecology, interrelationships, and the potentials of mycoremediation.

This site was created by one woman and is now run by several nature lovers. The main focus here is ethnomycology, which is simply the study of human interaction with fungi. We want to explore how people use and interact with mushrooms, and how you can do the same.

Here you’ll find information on growing mushrooms, cooking mushrooms, using fungi for medicine, hunting for mushrooms in the woods, and information on certain types of mushrooms. This site is for both the aficionado and the layperson. We want every article to be informative, easy to understand, and most of all: fun!

It is our fond hope that this site will grow into a repository of fungal information. Hopefully, we can all gain a little mushroom appreciation.
