NASCAR drivers, breast cancer survivors share personal stories of the impact breast cancer has had while raising awareness of early detection and prevention by painting Charlotte Motor Speedway’s pit wall pink ahead of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Alongside dozens of pink shirt-wearing breast cancer survivors, NASCAR drivers Kurt Busch and Daniel Hemric joined officials from Charlotte Motor Speedway and Blue Cross NC in painting Charlotte Motor Speedway’s pit wall pink on Tuesday.

The speedway’s eighth Paint Pit Wall Pink event has become an annual tradition to celebrate survivors, provide hope for those battling breast cancer and paint the 1,500-foot pink pit road wall to raise awareness of the importance of early detection.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Greg Walter and Performance Racing Network’s Lenny Batycki joined the survivors in painting the wall.

The event featured a special unveil of the pink Toyota Camry pace car for the Drive for the Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross NC race on Oct. 9. The car, is covered in more than 600 digital signatures of breast cancer survivors and those currently battling, serves as a reminder that no one fights alone.

During the event, Hemric, whose family has been directly impacted by breast cancer, presented a green flag to Jennifer Grady, a breast cancer survivor and senior strategic policy consultant for Blue Cross NC who shared her story during Tuesday’s event.

“I am grateful that my cancer was detected early on to afford me more treatment options, because I know that isn’t always everyone’s story,” Grady said. “Early detection has significant impact on breast cancer treatment and outcomes, and I encourage every woman to commit to annual testing.”

Additionally, Busch shared that he has rallied drivers in the Cup Series to run pink window nets during the Oct. 10 Bank of America ROVAL™ 400, to further raise awareness as part of an initiative called “Window for Hope.” The idea came to the Chip Ganassi Racing driver after he received a letter from a fan who mother was battling breast cancer asking if Busch could run a pink window net to show support for those battling.

“I’m like, ‘That sounds like a brilliant idea; let me go to work,” Busch said. “A small idea from a race fan will now have every NASCAR car at the ROVAL – at this year’s (Cup) race – will have a pink window net. We’re just trying to create more awareness of breast cancer, support survivors and everyone going through the process.”

Cheryl Parquet, Blue Cross NC’s director of community development and marketing activation, said that Paint the Wall Pink is inspiring each year.

“We’re grateful for partners like Charlotte Motor Speedway who share our passion for honoring survivors and increasing breast cancer awareness and early detection,” said Parquet. “The pink canvas ribbons our volunteers have painted are a reminder that our patients and survivors are not alone. In the face of breast cancer, we stand together.”

Martinsville Speedway Joins Team Chevy and the American Cancer Society to Paint the Curbs Pink

Martinsville Speedway Joins Team Chevy and the American Cancer Society to Paint the Curbs Pink

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers Kyle Larson and Ryan Newman joined 24 breast cancer survivors at Martinsville Speedway for the annual Paint the Curbs Pink event with Team Chevy and the American Cancer Society.

After joining the survivors to paint the Speedway's iconic curbs pink, Larson and Newman strapped into the same Chevy Pace Cars that will pace the First Data 500 and gave the survivors some laps around Martinsville.

"It was fast," Katie Varney said as she climbed out of the car grinning from ear to ear. "I screamed, it was wonderful."

Varney and the other survivors weren't the only ones smiling when turning laps.

"I think there were smiles on all of our faces," Newman said. "It was great to put smiles on people's faces, whether they needed it or not. To be able to tie that into NASCAR and the race track, I hope these people get to come back and experience the fall race here at Martinsville."

Varney is one of those who is now looking to come back and gain the full experience.

"My father was an avid NASCAR fan and I grew up here, graduated from Martinsville High School, and it stinks that I had to get breast cancer to do this, but what fun," she said. "It was awesome. I may be a convert."

The Paint the Curbs Pink event didn't end when the drivers and survivors left though. In fact, it's just getting started, as Chevrolet will donate $350 to the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign for every caution lap run during the First Data 500, up to $50,000.

"We're celebrating a great day with survivors," said Chuck Speiser, Chevy Motorsports Marketing Manager - NASCAR. "With the money that we can raise with pace laps and making people aware of the opportunity we all have. This goes with research and other forms of awareness, we are raising that bar."

While the laps were fun, it's the raising not only awareness, but money that means the most to Varney.

"As a survivor, it means everything," she said. "The only way we going to keep other young women from being diagnosed is money. We have to do the research and you have to fund programs for early detection and if we don't it's going to keep getting us and I don't want anyone else to have to go through it."

For Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell, Paint the Curbs Pink is an event he looks forward to every year.

"Paint the Curbs Pink is one of my favorite events we host," Campbell said. "Every year to see the smiles on the faces of breast cancer survivors; it really makes you happy. I can't thank Chevrolet and the American Cancer Society enough for choosing Martinsville Speedway as a venue for holding the event."

To date, Chevrolet has donated more than $199,000 as a result of Paint the Curbs Pink. Last fall there were 54 caution laps in the race.

The First Data 500 is the first race in the Round of 8 of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. If the winning driver is in the Playoffs, he would be the first to clinch a spot in the Championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Last fall, Jimmie Johnson won his ninth grandfather clock, on the way to winning his record-tying seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship.

The Kelly Jo Dowd Breast Cancer Research Fund was developed in honor of the late Kelly Jo Dowd, one of the original Hooters Girls who graced the cover of the 1995 Hooters Calendar.

Always an inspiration to her fellow Hooters Girls, Kelly Jo valiantly battled breast cancer for five years before succumbing on May 24, 2007. Throughout her struggle she was courageous and selfless, becoming an advocate for early detection, education and fundraising. Her influence on Hooters culture of service remains as strong as ever.

Hooters has raised more than $4.7 million over the years to support breast cancer research, much of it through the grant in Kelly Jo’s name to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the nation’s leading cancer research funding organizations. These grants honor Kelly Jo and further her mission to educate all women, especially her extended family consisting of some 300,000 current and former Hooters Girls, about the importance of early detection and prevention.

Why?

Hooters joined 12-time NASCAR Cup Series champions Hendrick Motorsports as a primary sponsor of driver Chase Elliott and the No. 24 Chevrolet SS team in 2017. Throughout the partnership, Hooters has offered exclusive “Chase Wins, You Win” deals, and has had Hooters Girls at the track to show their support for Chase. Chase, in return, showed his support by participating as a judge at the 2017 Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant. This month Chase supports Hooters monthlong fundraising efforts in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Every Hooters location across the U.S. will support the #GiveAHoot campaign during October through several fundraising programs that invite guests to:

Patrick Paints Martinsville Speedway Pink

Team Chevy will donate $5, up to $500,000, to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer every time the hashtag #IDriveFor is shared on Instagram or Twitter.

Danica Patrick joined Chevy Racing, the American Cancer Society and four breast cancer survivors Wednesday to Paint the Curbs Pink at Martinsville Speedway. The event is part of Team Chevy and the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program.

In addition to painting the iconic curbs, Chevy Racing will donate $350, up to $50,000, to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for every caution lap run during the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 on October 30. Last year the race saw 109 caution laps.

“What’s unique about Paint the Curbs is it’s like a precursor to the event weekend that’s coming up in a couple of weeks,” Jeff Chew, senior marketing manager for Chevy Racing, said. “So we want to one bring out the survivor group from the local community to join us and we want to make a splash in the local media, in the community and in the area about what’s coming.

The whole Martinsville Speedway Paint the Curbs Pink program is so cool. It’s the only one I know of in the sport.”

“It’s a great honor to be a part of something that is so important,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “Breast cancer has affected most of us in some way and we are thankful that Chevy Racing and the American Cancer Society want Martinsville Speedway to be a part of it.”

Like most everyone, Patrick has a personal story about the importance of breast cancer awareness and research. Her story isn’t about her or even an immediate family member, but a high school classmate.

“I have a very good friend who, 10 years ago we were in our mid-20s, she was tested for the breast cancer gene, because it ran in her family,” Patrick said. “Her results were overwhelming and she decided to have a double mastectomy to take away the chance that she would develop breast cancer someday.

“Those kinds of things happen because of events like this. People like Chevrolet that donate so many millions of dollars, $6 million since 2011, that’s very, very cool. Those things help with research and everything. That is why my friend won’t have to worry about (breast cancer).”

For breast cancer survivors the day was filled with emotion.

“When you look at the effort that everyone makes towards helping me is awesome. It’s absolutely awesome,” Beverly Rakes, a breast cancer survivor said. “I’m one who doesn’t like attention and am just getting used to being called a survivor. It was October of last year that I got the diagnosis.”

“It’s wonderful,” April Hammock, a three year survivor, said. “I didn’t even realize they did all of that for breast cancer awareness. I had no idea they do the donations for each caution lap.”

And from a fan standpoint, Hammock was also grateful to get to spend some time with Danica.

“She was fun. I’ve never been that up-close-and-personal with her. I’ve seen her close and gotten to take pictures of her, but I’ve never gotten to talk to her.

“She’s great. She’s really down to earth. I liked getting to spend some time with her.”

In addition to donating money for caution laps, Team Chevy will donate $5, up to $500,000, to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer every time the hashtag #IDriveFor is shared on Instagram or Twitter.

The Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Race Weekend is October 28-30.

The weekend starts on Friday with Virginia Lottery Pole Day and continues on Saturday with the Texas Roadhouse 200 presented by Alpha Energy Solutions NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in action Sunday with the Goody’s Fast Relief 500.

A special message for
One Direction

A business friend, Rich asked me for help this morning:

"There is a girl in our town, 15 years old, that was diagnosed with cancer a few years back along with a boy that unfortunately passed away last year. They were in the same grade. Her cancer was gone, but unfortunately she has relapsed. She now needs a bone marrow transplant. While I know it is a long shot, she is hoping to be able to meet One Direction at her Philadelphia Hospital before she needs her bone marrow transplant. She made a video and I was hoping you could share it anywhere you can!”

Rich has affirmed that this is “100% on the up and up.”

So here is what NASCAR Race Mom is asking.
  1. First please simply watch the video and leave a supportive comment if possible.
  2. Secondly, please share with your friends, family, co-workers etc.
It would be wonderful if we could band together and have this video go viral for this deserving child! This video only has 2,382 views and 81 thumbs up at the moment. Let’s get more for Brittany Santana!

Please help – it will only take a second yet mean so much.
