Rack and Pinion Systems
Introduction
Features of Rack and Pinion Systems
A rack and pinion system is a linear and rotary actuator combining a rack-and-pinion mechanism with a motor
of various types. Standard AC motors and s are provided for power unit.
Linear Motion Mechanism can be Realized Easily
With a rack and pinion system, motor rotation can be easily converted to linear motion. Rotation of the pinion-shaft motor is received by the
gear (reduction unit), and then transmitted through the pinion gear to the rack and finally converted to linear motion.

stepping motor or with a linear head.
Lineared motors are ideal for applications requiring multi-point
positioning or vertical operation involving speed adjustment.
Features
Reliable Control in Vertical and Horizontal Operation
Lineared motors can easily meet various linear motion needs, such
as speed adjustment and multi-point positioning, using a stepping
motor or as the drive motor.
Lineared motors adopting a control motor can implement speed
adjustment in downward operation.
Also, the LAS Series offers electromagnetic brake models that
can hold the load in position in the event of power outage and
also outputs an alarm signal upon detection of an overload or
malfunction.
Easy Setting of Travel Distance and Speed
Since is used, a desired travel distance can be set
flexibly based on pulse number output from the controller (pulse
generator).
Linear Heads
A "linear head" can generate linear motion simply by combining a
standard AC motor.
Linear heads can be combined with wide-ranging variations of
standard AC motors, and are also available with many different
strokes for use in simple operations such as push, pull, lift and
lower.
Features
Easy to Achieve Linear Motion
Linear motion can be achieved easily using the rack-and-pinion
mechanism.
The simple structure requires no coupling or conversion gear.

Pulse (DIR.-A) and Traveling Direction (DIR.-B) Signal
Connections
Use 5 VDC input for the pulse input signal and traveling direction input signal. If the V 0
voltage exceeds 5 VDC, connect an external resistor R1.
Example) If the V0 voltage is 24 VDC, connect a resistor (R1) of 1.5 to 2.2 k and 0.5 W or
more.
Output Signal Connection
Keep V 0 30 VDC, 15 mA maximum. If the current exceeds 15 mA, connect an external
resistor R2.
Notes on Wiring
Use multi-core, twisted-pair shielded wires of AWG28 (0.08 mm
2
) or thicker for the
control I/O signal line (CN4), and keep wiring as short as possible (within 2 m).
Note that as the length of the pulse signal line increases, the maximum transmission
frequency decreases. Technical reference Page G-46
When it is necessary to have a connection more than 0.4 m between lineared motor and
driver, an extension cable or flexible extension cable (sold separately) must be used.
Electromagnetic brake models must use an extension cable or flexible extension cable for
electromagnetic brake.
Caution
Connect 5 VDC power supply for "Timing" output signal and "Pulse" output signal. Pin No.
of the CN4 should be grounded.
Power Supply
Use a power supply that can supply sufficient input current. When power supply capacity is
insufficient, a decrease in lineared motor output can cause the following malfunction:
Lineared motor does not operate properly (insufficient thrust force).
Use the following cable for the power line.
Single-phase 100-115 VAC: 3-core cable [AWG18 (0.75 mm
2
) min.]
Single-phase 200-230 VAC: 3-core cable [AWG18 (0.75 mm
2
) min.]
Provide a minimum distance of 300 mm between the control I/O signal lines and power
lines (power supply, lineared motor and large-current circuits). Do not run the control I/O
signal lines in the same duct as power lines or bundle them with power lines.
To ground the driver, lead the ground conductor from the protective earth terminal (M4)
with a wire of AWG18 (0.75 mm
2
) or thicker and connect the ground conductor to provide
a common ground point.
Connecting the Electromagnetic Brake and Power Supply
Connect the electromagnetic brake to the power supply using a cable of AWG24 (0.2 mm
2
)
or thicker. The power supply input to the electromagnetic brake is 24 VDC 5% 0.3 A
minimum and therefore must be independent of the driver's power supply for signal control.
Note
The electromagnetic brake wire (60 mm) is linked to the connector on the driver
connection side of extension cable for electromagnetic brake motor (sold separately). Be
sure to use the extension cable or flexible extension cable. Connect the orange/black spiral
lead wire (orange for flexible extension cable) to +24 V, and the gray lead wire to the
ground (GND).

Features of Photomicro Sensor
Compact Size
The photomicro sensor is compact size which meets space-saving
needs. This makes it possible to decrease dead stroke.
Suitable to Ensure Position Detection Repeatability
Ideally suited for position detection repeatability in the case of
detecting the shielding plate from the same direction.
Note
Stop position repeatability is affected by overrun of the motor to be combined.
Two Line Output is Possible
By installing the sensors on both side of the rack, it is possible to
detect separately not only signals of both moving ends, but also
signals of moving ends and an intermediate stop position.

The maximum load mass that can be driven when operating the rack vertically is the maximum transportable mass less the rack mass.
The holding force when operating the rack vertically is the holding force less the force calculated by 9.807 multiplying by rack mass.
Holding force is provided by the built-in friction brake of the reversible motor. The values vary depending on the temperature and the time of operation (reference values).
Note
If the rack is moving up and down, speed control is disabled in downward moving. In these applications, use the full speed.
A number indicating the stroke length is entered where the box is located within the product name.
Decimal Gearhead
Even when using a decimal gearhead, the maximum transportable mass and holding force do not change.

1 Single-phase 200 VAC type motors can be combined with the brake pack SB50W capable of instantaneous stop, bi-directional operation and electromagnetic brake control.
Brake Pack SB50W Page C-230
2 Do not hit and stop an object because the output torque becomes very large while using a motor in a locked rotor condition. The shock generated when the load contacts the stopper may
damage the gearhead or linear head.
The characteristics when combined with applicable product can be found using the formula shown on "characteristics of linear heads." Technical reference Page G-71
In addition to the products shown above, the products for single-phase 110/115 VAC and three-phase 200/220/230 VAC products are also available. Please contact the nearest Oriental Motor
sales office.
Note
When the decimal gearhead 4GN10XS is used, use the mounting screws included with the decimal gearhead.
