Unit 37 - P4-Evaluation

Bradley reflects on the production of a documentary on binge drinking for his BTEC Media course. He analyzes what aspects of the production worked well, such as establishing shots that set up interviews, and edits that kept the audience engaged. However, he also identifies areas for improvement, such as choosing interview subjects more relevant to the topic, improving audio quality during interviews, and selecting a background image for the green screen interview that more directly relates to binge drinking. Bradley believes reflecting on these elements will help strengthen future productions.

Binge Drinking

Post Production Feedback

The format we had chosen to user for this Binge Drinking Production was a
Chat show/Reality TV style; this is because of the way in which our target
audience, through focus group research, had decided was the best format
to appeal to them.
So by gathering what kind of format we would be following first, we then
began to explore into similar programmes and shows that had the same
format and focus on the smaller details that in turn would help create the
bigger successful picture.

Clothing- Alan Carrs chatty man and Jeremy Kyle. The reason why we
looked at Alan Carr was because compared to Jeremy Kyle, clothing wise,
Carr was dressed more casual. Both these formats are the same however
they both have opposite approaches to how dressing can relate to their
audience, from this, we concluded that by dressing in a smart casual, we
was maybe to take features from both and use them to our advantage, by
this I mean that the smart dress sense can give the feel of my production
being professional, having that serious tone to the production, just enough
to get our target audience to trust us and also the casual side of the dress
code to relate to our audience, having similar clothing that they may
have/wear, this is to help relate to the audience, increasing and
improving our relationship with our audience, showing or hinting to the
audience that as presenters we are about the same age, again, getting
the sense of being able to trust what we say because of our age. I say this
because it will be hard for a target audience of teenagers to trust what an
adult is saying about or for teenagers because of the age different
whereas for myself and my partner, by showing we are the same age, the
audience can relate to us and know what we say is true because we too
are typical teenagers.
Continuing from the topic of what myself and my partner say, I think that
the questions that we chose to ask where a great choice however we
could have spent more time on what kind of questions we asked, why and
the structure of each question, while we did structure how we was going
to ask our interviewees and consider a structure of progressing questions,
I think that this section could have been much better. We asked
interviewees quiet general drinking questions then lead into personal
questions, using the You technique we had seen be used quiet a lot in or
examples and other researched shows, the You technique includes
phrasing a question directly to a person after generalising, so in our
production, we asked if they knew and understood what binge drinking
was and if they knew the effects, then we immediately asked them if they
then binge drink and how often if they did, this then helped us to lead into
more in-depth personal questions.
Teacher Feedback - Some creative touches in your interview however
you need to choose your interviewee more wisely so they are relevant to
the topic and can give you a good interview. Improve sound when outside.
Ensure you showcase your personality and interview skills when
interviewing. I think that whilst reflecting on this comment, I think that I
found myself nervous at most parts because it was the first time being on
camera interviewing people, so I think Ensure you showcase your
personality and interview skills when interviewing part is where I need to
focus on myself and improve on being able to speak out, whilst keeping it
to an interview but still be able to get my point across and questions,
interrupting the interviewee as such, with facts and figures.

Production evaluation

I think that overall, for a first production, we handle the documentation

side of the process well however for the visual production, I think we could
have been better, I say this because the outcome did not look so
professional and this is due to a number of factors such as camera angle,
even though during the pre-production stage we discussed possible good
shots and angles, when we arrived at the specific scene, it proved to be a
different story, by this I mean that at certain stages such as the image on
the right, it was hard to capture an interview with two cameras without
catching the other camera in the scene, so as a last minute decision, we
decided to focus the camera just on the person being interviewed, this is
also because of the format we had chosen to use, as we went with the
chat show / documentary style, using the camera man to follow us into to
the shot was a good way to show this and to make the shot the best it
could potentially be after finding out that two camera would not fit/work
in the shot.
Speaking about camera techniques, I think that we was able to capture
the documentary camera style, including the little details that we found
occurred frequently when researching into other documentary shows,
such as the intro of the
interviewer(s), at the star of the
show we showed the surrounds
environment ( Establishing shot)
then panned into the interviewers
approaching the camera, talking
directly to the audience, we felt that
this part was important part to
included, because once again, with almost every documentary show and
chat show, the host always speaks into the camera to get a relationship
going with the audience at home; from this we then felt that we needed to
include this feature too to begin making this
production feel like a documentary, this was
also a major feature to include as I mentioned
before because this was the starting point
in building a trustworthy relationship with our
target audience. This is one of many features
I
think we done well in our production and could have been better if was to
improve this.

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

In addition to things I think worked well was the overall edits, I think the
edits we chose to use and do worked amazingly in relation to the a
documentary style targeted at an audience of our age. The edits include
from a range of things lie normal cuts, to reverse shots, slowed and fasten
shots, overlaps continuity shot, mirrored. The reason why we chose to use
some of these complex edits is because they helped the production look
more alive and appealing to our audience, being in the target audience
ourselves and relating to what most people said during things like
questionnaires, we decided that what we thought appealed to us in the
post-production stage would also keep the audience engaged and
watching, this was the case however there was a number of other things
that let down the production, which I will begin to list and talk about;

Speech, I think that watching the production back, the level of our vocals
where often too low or muffled, this is often the case when interviewing
mainly, I think that whilst editing the video using headphones, the vocals
can be heard however out loud this seems to be the opposite case and
makes the production look unprofessional.

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

Another feature I dislike and think could have been improved was the
green-screen scene. This was the main interview with the BBC logo in the
background, I think that the image chosen did relate to the company we
was set to work for however, I think that we
should have chosen a image relating to (binge)
drinking. This is because, having an image
relating to the topic instead would have made it
clearer to the audience what the documentary
is about, and the image would have been able
to catch the audience attention whilst flicking through channels. The
current image I think is overpowering especially the longer the audience
has to look at it, I think to make this scene a lot better, we could have
used cut away to make the audience focus on different things rather than
sit and watch the same thing over a long period of time, increasing their
chances of switching off and/or paying less attention, research shows that
people in our target audience can hold an attention span of 15 20
minutes and whilst researching into an existing relating binge drinking
program, I found that whilst watching the program and interviews, I was
only able to concentrate on an interview for about 4 minutes in, and after
that it was hard to focus on what was going on. So by researching and
doing my own personal research I was about to put myself into the
viewers position and could tell that the interview was fairly long and the
possibility of the audience switching off, however with the way the
interview was set up there was no way to cut the production shorter
without the production looking messy and adding to the
unprofessionalism.

Pre-Production Process

Before starting our production, we carried out numerous amounts of preproduction tasks, this included things like Reece;
a Reece is a document that is created to study the different locations we
will be using, I think that we did this document effectively in terms of
presenting this document and producing this piece of work, as a
production team I think we was able to create a document to mimic a
professional standard, with that being said, I think that the locations that
we decided on through meetings we held were ideal with the given topic,
however when studying the locations, there were some elements that
helped proved that the locations were effective to use, like studying what
kind of people are in the area and at what time, this helped to plan out

BTEC Media Extended Diploma

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

our production in stages where we would record, who and when, however I
think that given the chance to do more interviews and planning, I think
that reflecting on these ideas and decisions, we could have chosen a more
covenant location that appeals to our target audience and that relates to
our topic, where recording people on the street relates to where binge
drinking takes place, out and about I think that if we were to record our
interviews in this section in a pub or one on one for a brief Q&A outside a
bar.
That being said, I think that planning and getting the initial idea for our
production went to plan and was great however, with the content, as
mentioned in a example above, could have been improved if thought
about differently, by this I mean that rather than focusing on studying the
area to match our target audience, study areas that relate to the topic
firstly, then decide whether our target audience will like the chosen area.

Target Audience

Our target audience for each interview production were people of both
genders at the ages of 16-34, because this is the target audience for BBC
Three, which is the company we are working for, in this specific
production, there are a number of ways I have researched into and done
to make sure I appeal and target my given audience well.
Firstly, we studied dressed code, being in a college and being a typical
teenager ourselves, we were able to look at how other people usually
dress, this then lead me to look at a different crowd of the audience,
spotting out the people who dress a bit differently, looking at those who
dress smartly also because in comparison to professional productions we

BTEC Media Extended Diploma

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

have researched in to, and the style they use, we decided on our format to
be a documentary and a smart casual dress code would be best. The main
thing I found out especially towards male audience, is that the majority of
them wore black clothing, most males do not like to wear colours or if they
did, it would be very limited to one item or a small part, the main clothing
for males were typical blue jeans or black bottoms with jumpers/tops
ranging from grey to black. The reason why I looked into dress codes was
because I thought this will be the first thing that the audience will see, as
presenters, introducing the production, the audience will see us and by
visually showing them we are roughly the same age as them, we can get
the audience to trust us and build on a relationship with them.
This then leads into the next thing I thought was an important factor in
targeting our audience, addressing the audience directly. Whilst
researching into other productions, as mentioned before, I saw that all the
hosts on the shows will speak directly into the camera for the purpose of
making the audience at home feel more involved and addressed to,
especially with a show like Jeremy Kyle, even though he has a live
audience, he still speaks into the camera to address his home audience
and makes them feel like a live audience member, which to me helps to
increase and maintain the viewers attention, the way in which I
incorporated this into my show was by having myself and my partner look
into the camera at different stages throughout the show and most
importantly produce a intro where we discussed what the show was about,
and speaking directly to the home audience.

Comparison to other presenters/shows

When comparing my Production to other shows I believe that we was able

to make the production different in a sense that it doesnt follow other
programs making it similar to them in what we do and the layout but I
think that we was able to pick out points we liked in other shows and
adapt them to fit our liking. The main show I focused on personally was
Jeremy Kyle, whilst watching him, I picked out his dress code and his style,
I noticed that out of everyone, Jeremy is the only person in the studio that
is wearing a suit, he doesnt get any of his guests to dress up but leans
more to letting them wear what they feel comfortable in, I also noticed

BTEC Media Extended Diploma

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

that this gives him the upper hand, making him seem more important
than the rest of the people on the show, by him wearing a suit and
standing out, the lime light will be on him, so I thought that If I was to
research into what other people in the college typically wear, I could come
up with a dress code that would make me stand out to the people I will be
interviewing. I thought that reflecting on my production I was able to get
this point across, by dressing in a smart casual, I was able to still make
myself look professional but still dress like my audience, relating back to
what I mentioned before about relating to my audience.
The other point I picked out and began to focus on was the fact that
Jeremy interacts with his audience along with the main guests, allowing
the audience to participate. I thought that by this I can get other people in
my production involved, rather than just interviewing our main guests, I
thought that it would be a good idea to keep the camera recording whilst
we walked around the college and asked random students their opinion
about the topic, however, I think that the idea did not work as well as
Jeremy does on his show, I think that because of our format, I just seemed
that the random students answering did not want to talk to us or answer
us, getting the same feel of them being involved wasnt the same as the
Jeremy Kyle show where the audience is excited to get involved.

Paris Attack

Post Production Feedback

For this serious topic, we had decided to go with a News interview format,
this was because of the seriousness of the story.
Presenting style, compared to my other productions, the style of this
interview had come across as more important and serious, so compared to
how I researched and reflected on my first production, wearing smart
casual to relate to my audience, I thought that by wearing something
more smart, it would help to make the production more serious and relate
to my audience in a sense that they would see me as more professional. I
think that my dress code clothing matched my body language with then

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

complimented my presenting style; Teacher Feedback -You were

confident with good eye contact and body language. Through Teacher
feedback single handily showed that I had great body language through
my interview and I was able to maintain good eye contact, I believe this
was all due to the fact of my research into my dress code, I researched
into other News shows and found dress codes to follow a strict rule, and
each male presenter wearing a tie when presenting the evening news and
sitting in a certain way, whereas in the morning news, even though dress
sense wise, they present themselves the same, they have more of a
laidback approach, so I decided to focus more into the evening news style,
which in-turn showed through feedback that I had done this step correctly
and effectively.
Another strength I think my production included was the questions
structure, I thought that I spent more time on my questions, thinking
about them more compared to my first production. I detailed and thought
about the questions I was going to ask, following my pervious structure of
starting off lightly then slowly and going in-depth at the same time whilst
progressing to my final points. Even though I followed a similar step in my
first production, I think that by understanding my downfall and picking a
better interviewee, I was able to show off the structure more and make
the interview more alive and better.
However with that being said, I think that there were a few downfalls in
my production, I think that even though my interview was more lively and
engaging to watch than the first production, meaning I have understood
what my flaws were and have acted on it to improve myself, I think that it
was too plain to watch over its period of time. By this I mean that, I should
have featured images or moving images to relate to the topic during the
interviews, I learnt from the first production that by the audience just
watching the same people make them turn off and not pay any more
attention, so I decided to improve the opening, where we included found
footage of the Paris attack so the audience can see what we are talking
about and why and then we proceed to the interviews, however I think
that a slight edit or including footage or images during the interview at
certain times could help refocus the audience and get them paying
constant attention throughout.
I think another downfall/weakness of my production was the poor editing,
focusing on the green room
Teacher Feedback - Need to make sure you follow the codes and
conventions of a news show more closely. Choose your interview more
wisely, choose the setting green room. You were confident with good eye
contact and body language. Remember you must engage your target
audience teens. Classroom interview would have been better in a small
group of students rather than classroom."

Pre-Production Process

In terms of planning I think once again we was able to show effectively

that the production was well organised, I think that by having the format
as a news show, with stricter codes and conventions to follow, It was
easier to portray that our format was news. I also think that by having a
stricter format to follow, the pre-production tasks were a lot easier to
handle, however were not easy to physically show. Having a news show, it
restricted us in what sort of places we would use to record however it
gave us one main location to use, which to use was the green room,
converting this into our main station such as BBC news do. Even though
we was able to come up with locations easier this time to stick to our
format meaning choosing professional looking news style locations, we
approached our feedback of looking at relating our background to our
audience and matching it to our speaker, for example when I interviewed
The CTK Media teacher, I decided to record our interview in a media class
room to relate to the speakers profession rather than relating it to our
topic or the Paris attack, this was mainly due to the fact there was no
ideas or possible way at the time we thought would work, or locations that
would link to the Paris attack topic so we then proceed to creating this link
with cut away footages. Even though this did help the audience visually
link the interview with topic along with the questions, which is another
part of the pre-production process that I believe we did and achieved
greatly on, helped to bring the production together.

Target Audience

I think that my production as a whole was able to portray a news format

and gain the attention of my audience because of several factors like
having the correct dress code and interesting questions about a recent
topic along with a better choice of interviewee compared to the last
production, however I think that a major issue that doesnt target our
audience but instead turns them off is the fact of the long running
interview. Where I see the interview to be good with interesting
questions, building and progressing on points, I see that when the
audience watch it, the pace of the interview was not fast enough to get
the point across and also to keep the audience, by this, I found out that

BTEC Media Extended Diploma

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

the average time people within my target audience pay attention is four
minutes before turning off mentally, so by having my interview longer
than this, suggest and tells me my audience lost interest in a lot of points
throughout the production meaning I was not successful in targeting my
audience properly.

Comparison to other presenters/shows

When researching into related programs and news shows, the only main
program we researched into was BBC Threes 60 second news and BBC
news, this was because of production was for BBC Three, so we had to
take the only existing news format on the channel, and take parts away
from this, we also looked into BBC news, this was to follow codes and
conventions like dress codes. When comparing my production back to
these shows and the presenters, I think that I was able to take the main
concepts of making the production look like a news show, such as the use
of the green room as the main station such as BBC does and then
channelling out to outside the headquarters for interviews for different
topics.

Relationship

Post Production Feedback

I think that the main issue and feedback for this production was slack of
creativity and technical issues. First off, looking at the technical issues,
Teacher Feedback - Sound issues play back on set so you can test out
sound issues. whilst playing the interview back on a big screen, we
noticed interference playing close to the camera, masking over
everyones voices, this could be an issues caused by the camera man
either having a device receiving information or an issue caused whilst
editing the footages.
The production also slacked creativity, Interview much too long, keep it
short and relevant to target audience. No outro, just ends. I think that this was
because the production team was concerned about getting the interview right,
making sure, questions were strong and engaging for the audience because of
the relatively easy topic to relate to the target audience, Hobie dont let others
dominate, ensure you talk for as long. All three good use of eye contact, good
progressing from point to point, however I think that by having a

BTEC Media Extended Diploma

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

documentary/chat show style show, with no real reals or codes or conventions to

follow, the production was hard to mimic or be inspired as there is no real right
way in following shows like this, so the sense of freedom drew people away from
focusing on getting the smaller details in place and checked such as a news
format and making it look professional.

Teacher Feedback - Sound issues play back on set so you can test out
sound issues. Setting looks like job interview, dont sit so far from the people
you are interviewing. Use multi camera set up. The VT feels stuck on you
should reference it in your interview and relate it to what youre talking about.
Also the VT is so longer. Hobie dont let others dominate, ensure you talk for as
long. All three good use of eye contact, good progressing from point to point.
Interview much too long, keep it short and relevant to target audience. No outro,
just ends.

Pre-Production Process

I think that the paper handled in this production also worked well, I think
we was able to hold meetings properly, deciding on things like the kind of
questions we will ask in regards to relating it to the relationship topic, I
also think that all the paper work, to decide who we will interview and
why, worked well because it showed in our production that the
interviewees we chose to interview provided us with a more interesting,
engaging conversation.

Target Audience
I think that as a group discussing things like location in terms of it looking
good for our audience and relating it to them, there was no real place that
could tick both boxes so we went with the approach of interviewing
students in their studying environment, this was because we went and
focused on location that we would find our audience to help the audience
at home watching relate to the interviewees speaking because they could
see it was real students, rather than the interview take place elsewhere
and the host saying the two guest speakers were students and have the
chance that the audience at home do not believe us. I think in terms of

BTEC Media Extended Diploma

Bradley Bablee

Ms.Schutze

actually targeting our audience, we did not succeed as well as we could

have; by this I mean that through smaller detail such as intro, the intro
could have been more hyped and appealing to the audience, where it was
a more relaxed format, we could have decided to careful select things like
trending relating music to catch our audience, along with a vibrate
standing out intro with more enthusiasm in our voices. I think that
naturally, when comparing the topic to the other topics I have previously
done, the topic naturally can attract our given audience more because it is
a subject, people in our target market tend to either be in, getting into or
conflict in their lives are mainly about this, so I think that the topic itself
can grab the audiences attentions and I think that the questions we
focused on also had a sense of being able to grab our audiences and
maintain some however, as mentioned before, the interview did run
longer than expected because of the engaging atmosphere and the
constant questions and answers back and forth with in turn seems
dragged on for people in our target market; as mentioned before, a
typical person in this age range has an average attention span of 4
minutes before losing interest or and turning off. I also think that if we
were to hype up the topic the way BBC three do in regards of their own
programs, quick snappy shots and scenes, we could have made this
production even better.

Comparison to other presenters/shows

In terms of comparing my show back to other shows, I would say that I

was more successful in mimicking set-ups but more importantly with
questioning format and layout, progressing from point to point more
effectively and better. I think that in terms of comparing visually my
production doesnt look or follow other shows, this is because of the
feedback and self-evaluation as I mentioned before, the slack of creativity
this means that my show didnt have a proper layout and a professional
look which brought the whole show down.
