I am writing this letter on behalf of Christine Lauber, who is seeking a position in your school. I have
known Christine for four years as her advisor and professor during her undergraduate and masters
level programs. She is currently completing her Masters Degree in Literacy Education.
I have had Christine in three of my methods classes, where she has demonstrated her ability to assess
learners in literacy with a variety of assessments, make interpretations of those assessments, and plan
effective instruction. In each tutoring lesson, Christine chooses appropriate tools to assess learners and
plans meaningful lessons aligned with her assessment data and the Common Core State Standards. For
example, Christine used running records and comprehension assessments such as questioning and a
Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) chart to assess a third graders reading processes. She also
learned how to study her students miscues and writing to determine areas of need for word study and
mini lessons on the writing process. Each week she created a guided reading lesson to teach her learner
effective strategies for comprehending and extending ideas learned in texts. She chose engaging topics
that motivated her young readers and writers to participate in her instructional lessons.
Christine develops her professional and practical knowledge about reading by reflecting on her teaching
and on her students learning each week. In our courses, her written reflections made meaningful
connections to our course readings and analyzed what was successful about her teaching and how she
could improve her future practice. Her course portfolio is still used today in my classes as an exemplar.
In the Masters degree program, which prepares candidates to be literacy leaders, Christine has
demonstrated her ability to collaborate with teachers to assess a literacy challenge identified by the
teacher, provide appropriate instructional recommendations, and collaborate with the teacher to
implement the instruction and plan next steps. In each internship, Christines support was well received
by the teacher and made a positive difference in the success of the students in each classroom. I am
confident that Christine will be an asset to any school as an exemplary teacher, literacy leader, and team
player.
Sincerely,
