To Whom It May Concern,

It is with confidence I write this letter of recommendation to support Claire McHugh as a
special education teacher. I had the pleasure of working with Claire during the Fall of 2016, when
she was a student intern in my second grade classroom at Beechview Elementary School in
Farmington, Michigan. From the beginning, it was clear that Claire was a hard-working,
charismatic, and creative individual. This was proven not only in the learning growth of the
students but also in the bonds she formed with them. In this letter, I would like to shed light onto
Claires achievements within her placement at Beechview Elementary School, her
accomplishments beyond, and how the skills she applied to the classroom would make her a great
fit for any special education position.
First, I would like to address the roles Claire filled in the second grade classroom. She
focused heavily on teaching the math curriculum, Math Expressions, to students. The class
contains a very diverse group of students in terms of mathematical knowledge, yet Claire took the
challenge of teaching these students in stride. She implemented a stations system, transcribed
each math lesson onto Google Slides with animations and visuals, provided challenge notebooks to
students who needed more challenge and accommodated notebooks to the students who were
struggling. She reinforced the idea that math could be solved in many ways, and also incorporated
manipulatives into every lesson. Claire consistently went above and beyond to see the students
thrive in math and looked for new ways to enhance their learning environment. She additionally
assisted and led our morning meeting routine, taught lessons in science and social studies, and
also contributed to a literacy intervention group. Claires enthusiasm for teaching is evident in the
amount of time and energy she put into this second grade classroom.
Prior to the internship year, Claires passion for teaching led her to become involved in
several organizations. In the summer of 2016, she was a Teaching Fellow through Michigan State
Universitys Detroit Urban Immersion Fellowship where she assisted and taught at Neinas
Elementary School. In a second grade class, she supervised field trips and directly taught various
grammatical rules to struggling students to give them the skills necessary for success in third
grade. Claire additionally was involved with Read To Succeed, a tutoring program based in
Lansing, as well as additional tutoring positions at elementary schools throughout college.
Claire is a dedicated individual, evident in her participation in the Michigan State
Universitys Honors College. During her time as an undergrad, Claire completed eight honors
projects or courses, tutored, engaged in her practicum experiences, and took full course loads, all
while maintaining a very high GPA. She graduated with honors in the spring of 2016. Her
persistence and self-motivation make her a perfect candidate for this graduate program.
To conclude, I have no doubt that Claire will thrive as a special education teacher. She has
shown through her many experiences and her excellent work at Beechview Elementary that she is
a hard working, focused individual. She has a natural drive for teaching that would be an asset to
any school that has the pleasure of hiring her.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.
