Portfolio Process Reflection

Lesson One: Recognizing Accomplishments


The most life-giving part of creating my portfolio was seeing the accomplishments of my
two years in the program. I have put forth a lot of effort and energy to create a portfolio that
encapsulates my areas of strength and growth in the program. When searching for artifacts, I
appreciated the opportunity to revisit projects, papers, experiences, and presentations I had
developed during the program. It was actually rather difficult to select only a few papers and
presentations to put in my portfolio, and I switched artifacts quite a few times until I made a final
decision about what captured my growth. I am very proud of the work I have accomplished so
far, and now understand the importance of taking a step back to recognize hard work and
achievement.
Lesson Two: Overcoming Ambiguity and Challenge
I enjoyed the beginning stages of the portfolio process; I appreciated the ability to put my
creativity into action using my work in the program as a guide. Although I enjoyed the creative
aspect of developing my portfolio, it was challenging to navigate the ambiguity of the EPortfolio packet we were given at the beginning of the year. The most challenging part of
creating my portfolio was writing the learning outcome narratives. The instructions for the
learning outcome narratives were very rigid and structured, and I felt it took away the creativity I
so desperately wanted to showcase in my portfolio. I eventually overcame my frustrations, and
am happy with my learning outcome narratives, and the ability to synthesis multiple themes,
learning outcomes, and artifacts together to demonstrate my growth.

Lesson Three: Creating Deadlines


I learned during this process that I am very detail oriented, and thrive in major projects by
creating outlines and checklists. The outline I created for the learning outcome narratives helped
ease my frustrations, and allowed me to feel less overwhelmed with the amount of work that
needed to be done. The only hard deadline for portfolio is the submission date, which can be
challenging for individuals who like to procrastinate. I knew that I could not wait until the last
minute to create my portfolio, so I organized a set of mini deadlines for myself. Although I set
personal goals and deadlines, I continued to find more things that needed to be done as the
process unfolded. My portfolio platform was designed in January, and I continued to work on it
little by little until its completion in April. These small deadlines helped ease the stress and
anxiety of the portfolio process, and I am happy with the end result.
