sWRITERS NOTEBOOK

The profile I chose to discuss is entitled A CHURCH FOR EVERYONE, filmed by Carter
McCall. In McCalls short film, the purpose was to show that no matter your sexual orientation,
you can still be a Christian that God accepts, and that there is a church home for you. McCalls
purpose is achieved in his short film in several ways. Dennis Massenburg, a gay pastor who
started a worship service catering to gay and lesbian Christians was chronicled in McCalls short
film as a HIV positive man who struggled with his sexuality growing up, as Massenburg
recounted, he tried everything from being with other women to praying and fasting to God to
become straight, all to no avail. Massenburgs tells how he realized God made him who he is and
he should embrace it, and since he noticed bay/lesbian Christians were more or less shunned
from traditional Christian churches, he took it upon himself to start his own worship service to
cater to those people.
GRADUATION WAS A MAJOR MILESTONE FOR NFL PLAYER
In the article about Earl Mitchell, former U of A football player and student turned Miami
Dolphins NFL player, written by Doug Carroll, its evident interview information was used in this
profile in a few ways. Field research was used in Carrolls article, by evidence of direct quotes
from Mitchells learning specialist in college, Marisol Quiroz, as well as direct quotes from his
mother Lisa Mitchell, as she talks of the tough neighborhood her son Earl grew up in as a child,
as well as his rebound from a tough hit he took on the football field as a young boy. These
examples are also evident of interviews. Carroll also seems to have used interview information
when he talks of Earl losing his 77-year-old grandmother at the age of 14 to heart failure; Earl is
recorded as saying She just wanted me to be successful, thats the only thing she ever preached
to me, just to be a man.
