Hl440 Reflection Piece:
The Mission of NMU is: Northern Michigan University challenged its students and
employees to think independently and critically, develop lifelong learning habits, acquire career
skills, embrace diversity and become productive citizens in the regional and global community.
As I reflect on this course, and the work I have done, I feel that I was challenged to engage
NMUs mission-central learning. Throughout this class, I felt very encouraged to expand my
horizons when thinking about certain topics instead of only focusing on my opinion. I was able
to look at health issues from different points of view which allowed me to think independently
and critically. This also enabled me to develop lifelong learning habits and career skills as it is
very important to me as a future public health educator to be knowledgeable on health issues and
the opinions that surround it. The learning habits I developed when learning these topics as well
as the critical thinking model will stay with me throughout my life. Lastly, I felt that I was able
to embrace diversity and be a productive citizen in the regional community, however, I dont feel
I have reached the global level just yet, although I hope to in the future. This course allowed me
to do this as the topics we learned cover a diverse range of populations. Overall, this course was
very beneficial to me and the knowledge and critical thinking skills I have developed will be
utilized in my future career.
