Programme accreditation involves evaluating educational programs to ensure they meet standards of quality. There are two main types of accreditation in India - institutional accreditation, which evaluates an entire school or university, and programmatic accreditation, which evaluates individual programs of study. The National Board of Accreditation provides programmatic accreditation for technical programs in fields like engineering, management, and pharmacy. Accreditation is important as it provides a status of quality, allows student mobility, and ensures programs equip students for their professions. The NBA uses outcome-based accreditation criteria focused on graduate attributes to evaluate programs. What is Accreditation
Accreditation is both a status and a p
process. As a status,, accreditation

provides public notification that an institution or program meets

standards of quality set forth by an accrediting agency. As a process,
accreditation reflects the fact that in achieving recognition by the
accrediting agency, the institution or program is committed to selfstudy and external review by one's peers in seeking not only to meet
standards but to continuously seek ways in which to enhance the
quality of education

Type of Accreditation
In India, there are two types of academic accreditation: (1) institutional and
(2) Programmatic.
Institutional accreditation is provided by national accreditors (NAAC) and

evaluates overall institutional quality, i.e., the evaluation of an entire school,

college, or university
Specialized or programmatic accreditation evaluates an individual program

of study, rather than an institution as a whole. This type of accreditation is

granted to a specific program at a variety of levels (Diploma, Undergraduate and
Postgraduate).
Of these two types of accreditation, NBA provides accreditation to the
programmes of technical institutions in various disciplines namely Engineering,
Management, Pharmacy, Computer Application, Architecture etc.

Accreditation
The parameters of accreditation are the set of individually assessable
outcomes (Graduate Attributes) that are the components indicative
of the graduates potential to acquire competence to practice at the
appropriate level.
le el The Graduate Attributes are exemplars
e emplars of the
attributes expected of a graduate from an accredited programme.
The graduate attributes serve to identify the distinctive characteristics
as well as areas of commonality between the expected outcomes of the
yp
different types.
These attributes differ from Discipline to Discipline and Level to Level

Issuance of Accreditation Status

Based on the decision taken by the EC, the accreditation status will be notified to the
institute by the NBA. An accreditation certificate for accredited programmes may
also be issued.

Appeal against the Accreditation Status

The institute can make an appeal against the accreditation status conveyed by the
NBA by submitting an online appeal within 30 days, if the institution is not satisfied
with the accreditation status of the programme.
