Cilostazol

Generic Name: Cilostazol Brand Name: Pletal

Classification: Platelet Aggregation Inhibitor

Mechanism of Action: Inhibits the enzyme cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) phosphodiesterase III (PDE III), which results in increased cAMP in platelets and blood vessels, producing inhibition of platelet aggregation and vasodilation

Indication: For treatment of intermittent Claudication Dosage: 50mg PO BID

Nursing Consideration: Assess patient for intermittent claudication before and periodically during therapy. Instruct patient to take on an empty stomach 1 hr before or 2hrs after meals Caution patient to avoid driving or other activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known. Advise patient to avoid smoking.

Adverse Effect headache diarrhea dizziness heartburn nausea stomach pain muscle pain fast or irregular heartbeat unusual bleeding or bruising swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
