Touch Rugby - Week 1 Warm Up - Stuck in The Mud (Stage 1)

This document outlines the warmup and drills for a touch rugby lesson. The warmup involves variations on a game of tag. Drill 1 focuses on passing technique in groups of 3. Drill 2 is a 2v1 drill where attackers try to score tries against a defender. Drill 3 is a loop drill that also pits 2 attackers against 1 defender, and requires the attackers to draw in the defender before passing to a teammate. The learning objectives are for students to demonstrate a spiral pass and use of tactics like drawing in a defender to pass to an open player. Objectives differ for different age groups focusing on tactics and strategy in 2 on 1 situations.

Rugby – Week 1

Warm up – Stuck in the mud (Stage 1)

• 3 variations:
o Slam ball down, step over ball and run allowing the person that tagged you to pick up
the ball
o Pass the ball to tagger, you can not tag who you just passed to
o Pass the ball to tagger who passes it back to you, tagger goes and tags someone else.
Taggers swap after 30 seconds

Drill 1: Passing in groups of 3 (Stage 1-2)
• Technical passing in 3s – more of a teaching drill so it should have been taught second not
first
• KTP’s for passing the ball (year 7/8s) – step, shift, flick
• Spiral pass or flick pass is taught depending on the type of class you have. If you have more
AFL players teach them the flick pass, if more rugby players – teach the spiral pass

o Progression of Drill 1: Keepy off
• 2 attackers and 1 defender
• Defender tries to tag the attacker who has the ball, attackers attempt to get
rid of the ball (spiral or flick pass) before they are tagged
• This drill should have gone first to see if students are capable of throwing and
catching a rugby ball and then run away from a player – basic fundamental
movement skills = wait till the defender gets close, draw in the player and
pass it to space.

Drill 2: 2v1 – Stage 3
• Stage 3 drills as it involves strategies on how to get passed the defender
• Students tap the ball on their shoe to start drill, defender stand in the middle of the 10m
area
• Attackers start with the ball and attempt to draw in the defender to get a try
• Variations: Students can only throw the ball backwards which introduces them into the
rules of rugby where throwing forwards is not allowed.
• When tagged attackers slam ball to ground and step over which is then picked up by the
other attacker behind them to start the next play

Drill 3: Loop drill (2v1) – stage 3
o Stage 3 skill as it involves students to think about strategies and tactics to draw in
the player to step around them and score a try
o 1 defender, 2 attackers
o 1 attacker starts with the ball
o Both the attackers and defender run around the cone 5m away at opposite ends
and then meet in the middle of the playing area
o Attacker attempts to draw in the player and either side step around them and score
a try or pass it off to their team mate who is open to score a try

Through the lesson the teacher says out loud the time limit students have to complete each
drill
o “3 minutes and we will add a variation to the drill”
o “2 minutes to go and then we will bring it in”
