Native American Genocide Inquiry

The student proposes researching the genocide of Native Americans in the United States. They choose this topic because of recent news stories about the mistreatment of Native Americans, and because their ancestors were affected by this genocide. The student is opinionated on this issue, believing the mass killings were terrible and unnecessary. Through historical documents, articles, and firsthand accounts, the student hopes to learn what caused tensions between Native Americans and the U.S. to escalate to genocide, how the U.S. went about moving Native Americans, and if this event fits the definition of genocide compared to other such events.

Research Proposal

I choose the topic of the genocide of the native population in the United States. I

choose this as I have seen many things on the news the last few years about what is

happening to Native Americans. There have been stories about land being taken,

pipelines being built and contaminating water, along with the recent news story of the

teenagers disrespecting native American elder. This reminded me of the past and how it

seems that the United States have always been taking things from them. I thought of

the genocide after looking at pictures on the internet about the holocaust. Stories about

other mass killings started to pop up and this was one of them.

This also is important to me to look up as I have ancestors that were affected by

this. My family is very invested in making sure that the younger generations know where

we originated from and the struggles that they went through. Knowing that so many

people were forced from their homes and killed truly hurts my soul as it to me was not

and never could be condoned for any reasons.

I am very opiniated on this topic as I feel that it should not have happened. The

mass killings of innocent people on both sides is terrible. I think that this topic will be

very eye opening as while I know details about it, I do not know all of the facts. While I

know that I may sympathize with Americas point of view at times, I also know that it will

not be enough to change my opinion. I believe that the way it was handled should have

been different. Fighting may have necessary at times but the senseless killing was not

necessary. Moving that many people should not of happened the way it did. Decisions

were made that were cruel and no one stopped it. I know that there were many battles

over land and that other nations backed the Native Americans at times. The

kidnappings that took place on both sides fueled the flame of hate each had. The other

thing I know is of the journeys that they were forced to make to the “reservations. I have

read many books about the Trail of Tears.

I am hoping to learn about what caused all of the tension between both sides.

Seeing how it escalated to the killings of innocent people is also important. Looking at

historical documents will be a must along with finding articles from academic scholars.

Reading firsthand accounts of what was taking place will give an inside look into it all

while the articles will give more explanation and facts. From looking at those I can find

answers to what caused the United States to begin the process of moving the Native

Americans along with how they did it. Another question that can be answered is that

compared to other genocides that have taken place, is this within the limits to be

categorized as an actual genocide.
