ASSIGNMENT EVALUATION

Evaluation Guidelines and recommendations

MEMORANDUM

To: All Students, Business Communication 1

From: Salmaan Rahman, Instructor

Subject: Future Expectations for Class Assignments

In response to the very poor results in the last assignments (2 & 3), I am putting together the following
suggestions to outline what is expected from FAST-NU students, and the procedures that you should
follow when submitting your assignments.

As stated in the cover email, the main problems can be listed as follows:
• Plagiarism. Cutting and pasting without proper attribution
• Poor organization of information
• Grammar, punctuation and spelling issues
• Failing to follow instructions as given in course outline about assignment submission
(missing roll numbers, class section etc)
• Poor formatting, excessively large, unprofessional fonts etc.
• Lack of relevance to the subject at hand, carelessness, obvious lack of proofreading
• Poor research.

These will be discussed in the following 4 categories:

First, research is part of the writing process. You are expected to research all the necessary information,
analyze it, and then organize it into a logical and relevant sequence, clustering related information
together. This result should be integrated into your own understanding before being encoded into the
appropriate form (words) and format (structure), and transmitted through the appropriate channel.

Plagiarism, as has been explained multiple times, is taking work performed by others and passing it off
as your own. Apart from being illegal in this institution, a simple ethical consideration should show it as
stealing. Using someone else’s work does not show off your own level of ability and understanding,
which is what one is being tested for in an academic institution.

To avoid this in the future, it is expected that all students will place direct citations in quotation marks
and properly reference all sources of research.

Second, writing is a skill that you are expected to polish during the course of this semester. You will be
evaluated on your ability to organize information, to provide the proper structure, and to follow the
general rules of business communication. Using excessively large fonts and careless formatting will
result in loss of marks. General rules of both writing and formatting are provided in class, while the fine
details are available in your text books. Students will be expected to study both and show their
knowledge of both.

Third, proofread. Just as giving thought before writing allows you to anticipate the needs of the reader,
proofreading allows you to predict the impact your efforts will have on the evaluator. Careless spelling,
poor punctuation, poor organization must be corrected before sending off the work.

Fourth, follow instructions wherever they have been given. The rules of submitting assignments have
been clearly spelled out in your course outline. Ensure that you have all the necessary personal
information neatly typed out in the upper left hand corner, that assignments are numbered
appropriately, and that you avoid using cover sheets and plastic binders.

In summary, I anticipate that the above information will result in a much higher performance from all of
you. You have the ability; you just need to reveal it.
