Impact of exposure to on-screen time on the development of children aged between 1-
5 years
INTRODUCTION:
In this time awarded the epithet “internet era”, screens have become a commodity that we
cannot afford to lose. They are useful in transfer of information across the globe, in
acquisition of knowledge in various fields, in communication and even in entertainment.
This aspect of internet is often employed by caregivers to educate the child through the use
of games or videos. Conversely, it may also be misused in order to keep the child
occupied for long periods.
REVIEW:
The first few years of a child's life are the most crucial in the development of various skills,
ranging from physical to social and mental prowess. The interactions and relationships built
during this period have a huge and lasting impact on the child's psyche and personality
development.
Spending their primitive years on various screens may primarily impact the child in two
ways:[1]
1. Lack of interaction with the surroundings - thus affecting the child's fine and gross
motor development
2. Lack of interaction with parents and peers - affecting social, emotional, language and
cognitive development.
In this research paper, we attempt to do an explorative study amongst children based on
duration and type of on-screen time they are exposed to, and its relationship with
development of children in motor, communication, cognitive and socio-emotional domains.
OBJECTIVE:
To determine the relationship between motor, communication, cognition and socio-emotional
development in children, and the duration and type of on-screen time to which they are
exposed.
METHODOLOGY:
Study type: This study will be conducted as an explorative study in Indian population.
Study Setting: This study is to be conducted in children aged between 1-5 years
Sample size: From a study conducted by JAMA pediatrics on 2,441 children, and assuming
5% refusal rate, the sample size was arrived at as 155.
Inclusion criteria:
● Children between the ages of 1-5
Exclusion criteria:
● Children with pre-diagnosed developmental disorders
● Children whose guardians do not give consent
Study tools:
● Demographic data sheet
● ASQ (ages stages) questionnaire
● Specifically designed, informal survey questionnaire to obtain information regarding
the type and duration of on-screen time.
Ethical considerations:
Ethics Committee Approval:
This study will begin after obtaining due approval from Institutional Ethics Committee
Informed consent and confidentiality:
Informed consent will be obtained from the child's guardian before including them in the
study and all data collected will be kept confidential.
CONCLUSION:
The dangers of increased exposure to various screens in children is little recognised in the
current scenario. Developmental delays can have a long-term impact on the child's psyche,
personality and growth profile.
This study will help us shed light on the effect of exposure to various screens on a child's
overall development.
