Comparative Rhetorical Analysis
The two motivational speakers I chose are Tony Robbins and Dr. Joe Dispenza. I have
never heard of Joe Dispenza until we watched his video in class. The only reason why I know
Robbins is because he was on a recent episode of Family Guy. Family Guy exaggerated his
height and Robbins forced people to allow him to help them even if they didn’t want help. They
are both different in what they talk about and how they present themselves. Dispenza talks
and how you can fix and unlock things you want with your mind. Robbins talks about
unleashing your power and awaken the giant within both of those are his books, which means
stepping out and being more confident and living life.
Both Dispenza and Robbins have very general audiences. Anyone who will listen and
anyone who will relate to what they say and change many people’s lives as possible.
In the 1980s Joe Dispenza had a back injury, he broke six vertebrae after being hit by a
SUV going fifty-five miles per hour. He had two 12-inch stainless pools along both sides of his
spine, but he decided to not have any surgery. He tried to connect with his mind to build a
template so his body can start healing itself. After six weeks he was still in pain and then he
noticed he was focusing on the negative instead of the positive. After twelve weeks his body
was healed. He started training again and dedicated his life to studying the mind body
connection.
Tony Robbins grew ten inches due to a pituitary tumor (is a tumor that covers the
surface of the pituitary gland, it is not cancerous but not harmless). Robbins started his career
promoting seminars for a speaker named Jim Rohn at age seventeen. He became partners with
John Grinder, the co-founder of Neurolinguistics Programming. In 1988, he released his first
infomercial which gained a massive exposer and helped lead his career into a peak performance
coach.
Dispenza’s major points is all about how you can do it all with your mind including fixing
yourself and changing your life. Tony Robbins major points are personal performance like
various human needs, influences that affect people, like the power making decisions and the
need to achieve emotional mastery. These two speakers are like each other by saying how only
you can make your own decisions.
The way that Joe Dispenza addresses the audience in a calm tone. He is not yelling
instead he is just talking into the mic. Joe Dispenza uses pathos by saying a common thing that
everyone does in a day. He is saying that we have a repetitive life we do the same thing, see the
same people and the same habits every day.
Tony Robbins used pathos by talking about how at a point in his life he was hungry and
how someone delivered his family food, but his father said, “We don’t accept charity” and the
delivery man told his father “don’t let your ego get in the way of your family”. He used this to
hook everyone in to listen. He sometimes raises his voice at a point then calms down. Tony
sounds more vocal than Joe Dispenza because that’s just his voice.
Joe Dispenza was talking about how people wait for tragedy in their life to change their
life. I somewhat relate to this but on a much smaller scale. One day, I had three sodas and that
night my body felt weird, and it was something I never want to experience again therefore I cut
out soda. I could’ve just said I am not going to drink this because it’s bad instead, I waited until
something bad happened.
Tony Robbins talked about how we train our bodies physically so, we can train it
mentally. For example, he said people train their minds to be mad or stressed out and get used
to it and it becomes normal for them. I never thought about it that way. Today, I just think that
most stuff isn’t worth get mad about because I trained my mind to enjoy things. Sometimes, I’m
stressed without thinking I’m stressed because I grind my teeth when I’m stressed and have
massive tooth pain. So I try to relax if I notice my teeth start to hurt.
Tony Robbins and Joe Dispenza present themselves differently while talking to a group.
Joe talks calmly like any human would in a public setting. Tony talks with his indoor voice and
then goes up in tone and is a bit energetic and then comes back to earth. Robbins talks about
how to improve your personal performance. Dispenza uses a calm tone of voice, and He talks a
lot about the brain, neurons and how you can fix anything mentally. He also uses more
examples to relate to the general public. While Tony uses things that has happened to him in
life and how he made something bad into something good for his future.
