In  addition  to  commercial  grocery  markets,  there  are  numerous  convenience  stores,  restaurants

Geckos

Geckos,  a  small  lizard,  are  very  common  everywhere  in  Thailand.  They're normally light brown or
green,  but  can  change  colours  to  various  shades  displaying  nearly  every  hue,  as  well  as  decorative
spots and patterns.. Their skin is thin and smooth. House geckos can grow up to about 4 inches (10
cm)  long.  They  make  quite  a  loud  and  unique  clicking  sound  as  a  form  of  communication,
particularly  when  feeling  upset  or  threatened.  Their suction-like feet enable them to climb and run
on  ceilings  and  walls.  When  you  switch  on  the  lights  at  night,  geckos  come  out  from  their  hiding
places behind cabinets or under the roof to eat small insects - they are your friends!

the laundry room. They must be used in the laundry room.

Laundry

There  are  5  medium  capacity  and  1  large  capacity  washing  machines  and  3  dryers  in  the  laundry
room  for  communal  use.  They  are  free  of  charge  to  residents,  however  users  need  to  supply  their
own washing powder.

Please follow these guidelines for the laundry facilities:

1. For residents use only.
2. DBS is not responsible for lost or damaged articles.
3. Please do not overload the machines, as clothes will not be as clean.
4. Put  laundry  soap  powder  and  fabric  softener  in  the  small  pull  out  tray  at  the  top  of  the
washing tub.
a. Do  not  use  liquid  laundry  soap.  The  machines  are  made  for  use  only  with
powdered laundry soap.
b. Do not pour soap powder or fabric softener directly into the washing tub. The soap
powder may not dissolve completely, if you do.
5. Do  not  use  too  much  soap  powder.  Use  only  the  amount  recommended  on  the  package.
More  soap  does  not  equal  cleaner  clothes.  Using  too  much  laundry  soap  may  prevent  the
machine  from  being  able  to  completely rinse the clothes after washing, leaving soap residue
in the fabric.
6. Be  courteous  to  the  other  occupants  of  the  sta   accommodations.  Please  remove  clothes
promptly  after  washing  or  drying.  If  your  clothes  are  left  in the machines, expect that they
will  be  removed  and  placed  aside  on  one  of  the  laundry  room  tables,  if  they  are  blocking
someone else from using the machines..
7. Clean  lint tray at the end of each drying cycle. Lint accumulation not only causes the dryers
to operate ine ciently, it can also be a re hazard.

Hanging clothes on apartment balconies to air dry is not permitted.

In  addition  to  the  shared  laundry  room,  a  paid  for  laundry  service  is  available  -  Mrs
Laundry.  The  laundry  service  representative  will  be  in  the  front  lobby  of  the
accommodation  to  pick  up  and  deliver  laundry  on  Monday  and  Thursday  evening  from

Maintenance

Maintenance  checks  are  carried  out  on  a  regular  basis.  All  residents  in  the accommodation will be

All  non-routine  maintenance  requests  should  be  made  in  writing  to  the  Service  Helpdesk
immediately by email: servicehelpdesk@dbsbangkok.ac.th

Mosquitoes

In  order  to  prevent  the  spread  and  contraction  of  mosquito-borne  illnesses,  it  is  essential  to  avoid
getting  bitten  by  a  mosquito.  The  rst  step  to  avoiding this is to reduce the number of mosquitoes
around  you.  Create  a  barrier  between  you  and  the  mosquitoes.  Make  sure that open windows and
doors  are  secured  with  screens  and  that  sleeping  areas  that  do  not  have  e ective  screens  are
protected  by mosquito nets. In addition, applying  mosquito repellent on your skin and clothing or
burning mosquito repellent coils nearby will keep mosquitos at bay.

Parking

Parking  for  residents  and  visitors  is  in  front  of  the  sta   accommodation.  Vehicle  registration
numbers  should  be  logged  with  the  security  guards  at  the  sta   accommodation  front  desk.  You

Pets

No pets are allowed in the sta accommodation.

Plants and Flowers

Potted  plants  and  owers  are  permitted  subject  to  understanding  that any damage caused by water
leakage from the pots or containers will be repairable at the expense of the resident.

Potted plants and owers are permitted on balconies under the additional conditions that:

● The  plants  and  owers  are  kept  trimmed,  under  control,  are  not  allowed  to  overgrow  the
balcony  or  railing,  and  present  an  attractive  appearance  to  observers  from  outside  the
accommodation.
● Watering  of  the  plants  and  owers  does  not  create  an  over ow  of  water that splashes onto the
balconies of apartments on lower oors.

Public Transportation

Nonthaburi is connected to Bangkok by a system of multiple modes of public transportation.

MRT  -  The  Metropolitan  Rapid  Transit  system  is  the  closest  mass  transit  mode  to  DBS.  In  the
Nonthaburi  area,  the MRT operates as an elevated light railway, while in Bangkok proper the MRT
operates as an underground/subway system. The closest MRT station to DBS is Bang Rak Noi Tha
It  (if  you  are  outbound),  which  is  4.6km  from  the  school  (approximately  7  minutes  by  taxi).
Because  of  restricted  tra c  patterns,  if  you  are  returning  to  DBS  from  the  MRT,  the  more
convenient MRT station is Bang Rak Yai

BTS  -  The  Bangkok  Mass  Transit  System  operates  the  iconic  BTS  Skytrain  consisting  of  two
elevated  light  rail  lines  radiating  outward  from  the Sukhumvit Central Business District to provide
access  to  northern,  eastern,  and  western  areas  of  Bangkok.  The  BTS  connects  to  the  MRT  at
Chatuchak Park/Mochit station.

Airport  Rail  Link  -  An  elevated  light  rail  line  connecting  from  the  BTS  at  Phayathai  station  to
Suvarnabhumi Airport.

River  Ferry  -  The  Chao  Phraya  Express  Boat Company operates a river ferry from Pakret Pier (stop
33)  by  the  Rama  IV  Bridge,  which  is  approximately  10  km  from  DBS  (12  minutes  by  taxi).
Although  not  a  usual  transportation  mode  for  going  into  Bangkok,  the  river  ferry  system  can be a
good  choice  for  sightseeing,  particularly  if  your  destination  is  the  major  tourist  attractions  at  Wat
Pho, Wat Arun, and the Grand Palace.

Public  Buses  -  There  are  six  categories  of  public  buses  having fares ranging from 7 baht to 22 baht,
depending  on  the  type  of  bus  and  the  distance  travelled.  It  is  rare  to  nd  bus  drivers  or
conductors/fare  takers  who  speak  any  English  and  there  is  little  information  posted  in  English  at
the  bus  stops  or  on  the  buses.  Most  of  the  buses  are  not  air  conditioned.  Reliability  of  the  buses
and  the  old  diesel  engines  can  be  questionable  in  hot,  wet  weather.  Public  buses  are  not  highly
recommended  unless  you  are  very  short on funds and know exactly where you are going and which
bus  routes  to  take.  However,  for  the  adventuresome  and  cheap  traveller  taking  the  public  bus  can
be  an  interesting  experience  if  you  know  where  you  are  going  or  don’t  mind  trying  to  gure  out
how to get back from wherever you happen to end up on your bus ride.

Security

Security  sta :  are  stationed  at  the  sta   accommodation  front  desk,  24  hours  per  day  and  can  be
contacted on 089-8154-128.

Security  access:  all  members  of  sta   are  issued  with  a  security  access  card  and  blue  DBS  lanyard.
The  security  access  card  is  required  to  access the sta  accommodation. The cost of replacement for
any lost security access card is THB1,000.

Sta   should  not  let  unknown  visitors  or  strangers  into the sta  accommodation and should notify
security immediately if they see anyone they do not recognise.

Shuttle Bus Service

The  school  is  pleased  to  provide  sta   with  a  2  times  per  week,  shuttle  bus  service,  only  during the
term time.

Wednesday:  departing  from  outside  the  sta   accommodation  at  5.45pm,  returning  at  8.45pm  to
Central Westgate Shopping Centre.
Thursday:  departing  from  outside  the  sta   accommodation  at  5.45pm,  returning  at  8.45pm  to
Food Villa, Ratchapruek Road.

This  service  only  runs  if  there  are  enough  sta   people  informing  Services  that  they  want  to  make
the trip - usually at least 5 people.

The  school  reserves  the  right  to  change  these  arrangements  if  there  are  other  school commitments
that require priority transportation.

Snakes

Although  snakes  are  not common and they will normally avoid humans, the area around DBS does
have  snakes  that  may  come  on  to  DBS  premises.  Snake  bites  most  often  occur  when  a  snake  is
surprised or threatened.

If  you  encounter  a  snake,  move  away  slowly,  contact  the  security  guards  and  ensure  no  one  else
approaches the snake.

Medical Centre 095 365 9614
Guard 089-8154-128
Nurse Ubon 086-5399-653. Apartment 6101
Ambulance No: 098-249-0855

The  guards  may  kill,  capture  or  scare  away  the  snake.  They  may  call  the  wildlife  department  who
will capture and remove the snake, if appropriate.

In the event of a bite:

Try  to  stay  calm  or  keep  the  person  bitten  calm.  Panic will cause venom to move around the blood
system  more  quickly.  During  school  hours  contact  the  Nurse  immediately  and  wait  for  help.  If
outside  of  school  hours,  contact  the  Nurse  residing  in  the  sta   accommodation  or  Security  for
assistance  in  calling  an  ambulance  or  getting  a  taxi  to  take  you  to  the  Emergency  Room  at  the
nearest  hospital  for  treatment.  The  choice  of  hospital  will  be  at  the  discretion  of  the  Nurse  on
duty.

If  you  are  alone  and  are  not  able  to  contact  the  Nurse  on  duty  or  security,  the  nearest  hospital
which has anti-venom is:

Kasemrad  Rattanathibet  International  Hospital  (about  7  mins away). The  ambulance service
number is

098-249-0855

To  ensure  the  ambulance  comes  to  DBS  and  not  one  of  the  Denla  Kindergartens,  make  clear  that
you are calling from Denla British School on Ratchapruek Road.

Try  to  remember  the  appearance  of  the  snake.  If  you  can  identify  the snake it will help  the doctor
to determine the most appropriate anti-venom. If possible, take a photo of the snake.

Swimming pool

The swimming pool is for the use of sta and their visitors only.

The swimming pool is open at the following times:

Mondays - Thursdays 6:00 am - 9:00 pm

Fridays - Sundays 6:00 am - 10:00 pm

Please follow these simple guidelines when using the pool area:

1. Use of the pool is entirely at your own risk.  It is recommended that you do not use the pool
alone.
2. No glass or breakable items are permitted in the pool area at any time.
3. Please tidy up the pool area after use and dispose of all waste in the waste room.
4. No animals allowed.
5. Be considerate - No loud noises.
6. No running or other dangerous horseplay.
7. Dive only in designated areas.
8. Large  shade  umbrellas are kept in the covered area by the pool house. These are for use only
in  the  pool  area.  If  you  use  the  umbrellas,  please  take  them  down,  put the umbrella covers
back on, and return them to the storage area before you leave the pool.
9. Children  age  16  or  younger  may  not  use  the  pool  unless  supervised  by  an  adult.  Children
age 8 or younger may not use the pool unless the adult supervision is their own parent.

Use of the main school pools is not permitted for reasons of health and safety.

Taxis

Two popular mobile device taxi apps that you can use in Bangkok and Nonthaburi are:

Grabtaxi
Uber

Regular taxis can be hailed for you by asking the security sta and telling them your destination.

11 Things You Should Know About Taxis In Bangkok

1. Taxi  Colour  Codes?  They  are  just  di erent  colours  for di erent companies. Fares and features
are the same.
2. How  to  Spot  Available  Taxis  - Available taxis are the ones with a small glowing red sign behind
the lower corner of the windscreen.
3. Fair  Fares  -  All  legal  taxis  in  Bangkok  are  metered.  A  driver  refusing  to  use  a  meter  is  an
indication  of  a  suspicious  agenda.  If  he  insists  on  giving  you  a  xed  fare,  instead  of  using  the
meter,  it's  best  to  nd  another  taxi.  It  is  possible  to  negotiate  a  xed  fare  for  trips  to  speci c

places,  such  as  Suvarnabhumi  Airport  (especially  if  you  have  extra  luggage)  or  to  outlying
towns  or  tourist  locations.  However,  you  should  be the one to ask and you should know what
the  usual  meter  rate  is  before  negotiating  a  xed  fare.  Just  remember  that  if you are going to a
location  from  which  the  driver  will  likely  return  without  a  passenger,  you  should set the  xed
fare to cover the taxi driver’s costs in both directions.
4. Unwilling  Drivers  -  Don't  be  surprised  if  the  driver  refuses  to  take  you  where  you  wish to go.
There's  not  much  you  can  really  do  about  it,  although  you  can  report  the  driver  to  Land
Transport Department Hotline if you were able to get the driver’s license information.
5. Flagging  a  Taxi  –  You  can  hail  a  taxi  just  about  anywhere  on  the street, although it is better to
avoid  busy  street  corners  where  tra c  is  heavy  and  at  bus  stops,  especially  if  buses  are
approaching. Look for a location that has space for the taxi to pick you up safely.
6. Taxi  Scams  -  Watch  out  for  an  over-eager  taxi  driver  who  o ers  to  take  you  to  all  the  'good'
places.  Skip  it,  because  those  places  may  be  good  for  the  driver’s  income,  but  bad  for  you  in
many  ways,  not  just  higher  prices!  Trust  your intuition. If you don't get a good feeling about a
taxi  driver,  it  is  better  to  wait  for  the  next  one.  The  same  goes  for  tuktuks,  especially  at major
tourist locations, and even for some Uber and Grabtaxi drivers.
7. Clueless  Taxis  –  Thailand  taxi  drivers  do  not  have to pass a quali cation exam, so don't expect
Bangkok  taxi  drivers to know the city's every nook and cranny. It's always a good idea to carry a
map,  or  the  name  and  the  location  of  where  you're  heading  to  written  in  both  English  and
Thai.  Make  sure  you  have  a  good  GPS  or  map  app  on  your  mobile  device.  Be  particularly
careful  about  taking  a  taxi  to  DBS.  If  you  just  tell  the  driver  Denla  British  School  and  do not
clearly  state  that  it  is on Ratchapreuk Road, you will probably be taken to Denla International
Programme Pre-school on Rama V Road.
8. Watch  when  stepping  out!  –  Before  you  open  the  taxi  door,  look  behind  you  and  make  sure
there's  no  motorcycle  coming.  Motorcycles  are  everywhere,  and  the  motorcycle  drivers  don’t
pay  attention  to  anything  but  getting  ahead  as  quickly  as  they  can,  through  whatever  space  is
available.  It's  very  common  for  passengers  to  open  the  door  without  looking  and  have  a
motorcycle  slam  into  it.  This  can  cause  serious  injury  to  the  motorcycle  driver,  the  taxi
passenger,  as  well  as  considerable  damage  to  the  taxi  itself,  for  which  the  taxi  driver  will  want
you to pay to have repaired.
9. Tips?  Change?  -  Tipping  of  taxi  drivers  is  not  required,  though  rounding  the  fare  up  to  the
nearest  10  baht  is  common  practice.  It's  a  nice  thing  to  do,  because  taxi  drivers earn very little
and  work long hours in often stressful conditions (Bangkok tra c can be frustrating and many
passengers  are  not  as  nice  as  you  will  be).  Taxi  drivers  often  pretend  not  to  have  change,  so
carry  a  reasonable  supply  of  10  baht  coins  and  20  baht  currency  with  you!  If your route takes
you  on  a  toll  road,  the  passenger  pays  the  tolls,  so  you  will  need  small  amounts  of  money  for
that.
10. Lost  Items  -  Before  getting  out  of  a  taxi,  make  sure  you  haven't  left any valuables or shopping
bags  behind.  If  you  don’t  check,  it  will  likely  be gone, unless by some miracle you were able to
obtain accurate information about the name and license number of the taxi driver and taxi.

11. If  you  are  caught  in  a  taxi  scam  or  have  any  problems  with  a  taxi  driver,  you  can  report  the
driver  to  the  Land  Transport  Department  Hotline  on  1584. However, to make the report you
will  need  information  about  the  license  number  of  the  driver,  his  name  (if  possible),  the
location-time-date  where  the  incident  happened,  and  the  car  number  and/or  car  license  plate
of the taxi. Try to get a photo of the taxi, including license plate, and driver on your mobile.

The  disposal  area  for  all  waste  from  the  residents  of  the sta  accommodation is located outside of

to be discarded as recyclable materials)
● Glass bottles/jars
○ Bottles/jars must be rinsed/washed clean of any food or drink residue
○ Bottles/jars  must be put in a separate container, because broken glass will contaminate the

Water

There  is  a  wide spread, deeply entrenched belief in Thailand that tap water is not safe to drink. As a
result,  most  people  buy  bottled  water  for  drinking,  even  if  they  use  ordinary  tap  water  for  other
purposes  that  would  expose  their  body  systems  to  the  water.  In  older  areas  of  Bangkok  and  other
parts  of  Thailand  where  the  water  supply  systems  are  outdated,  the  belief  may  have  a  basis in fact.
Bottled  water  is  readily  available  and  cheap  to  buy.  In  addition  to  all  sizes of bottled water that are
available  at  markets,  stores,  and  shops  everywhere,  there  are  several  bulk  water  suppliers  that  will
deliver  all  sizes  of  bottled  water  up  to  19  litre  bottles for home or o ce water dispensers. The Sta
Accommodation  Manager  can  provide  recommendations  and  contact  information  for  bottled
water suppliers serving the DBS area.
