PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
1 We Belong – Community Baptism Baptism – I am special We are special
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
This unit of work focuses on the Sacrament of Baptism.
The unit of work starts with discovering ways in which everyone is different and special for example, different hair colour, different talents and
different in size.
As people wonder at the differences between individuals, they can be moved to wonder at God who creates every person (A1, A2)
Many people come to realise that, among the different things that can be discovered and celebrated about God who makes each of us
special, one is that God love us (A3)
The unit moves onto exploring how Jesus showed that all people are special to God and loves them all because of their “specialness”
Jesus shows that all people are special to God and that God wants people to use their specialness in loving ways (B1, B2)
The unit closes with exploring ways in which the students as followers of Jesus can use their “specialness” to show love for others.
Through a special celebration balled Baptism, people can become members of God’s family (C1), Jesus wants his followers to use their
specialness to show love (C2).
When followers of Jesus continue to try and use their specialness to show love, they are living as Jesus wants (C3)
During the unit of work, students will be learning over several weeks the prayer, song and reading for their in-class liturgy.
At the end of each lesson, students will be asked to reflect on a wonder question to help them link to the key understandings and develop
higher order thinking skills.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness
Catholic World View.
Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders
and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life:1 they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the
Christian's life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life. (CCC1210)
Teacher Witness:
As a parent and a member of the Catholic faith, I bring to the classroom years of experiences within the catholic faith and through being a parent. Within the topic of
Baptism, I can share my experiences with my children being Baptised, share personal experiences and objects (ie Baptism candles, gown used within my family.) I will be
able to share what its like to be in a family and a part of God’s family.
