(Belonging to a family/community)
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
This unit of work endeavors to explore the human experience of belonging to a family and the qualities and values families share and show to one another.
Exploring and wondering at families allows students to wonder about God and draw upon their own personal experiences to recognise that He gave us
families, as he loves each of us personally. Students will also delve into Jesus’ story and his family and see how he started a bigger and special family that
we are all now apart of known as the Church, which is God’s family. Students will discover the special and sentimental places and symbols God’s family
share together, generate ways to overcome family hardship and grow closer together through Jesus’ First Commandment and continue to wonder at
experiences of family to see the many ways Jesus taught us to love other members of God’s family just as He loved us.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting
Catholics believe family is important for the human person as it endeavours to provide support, love and care to its members which are all essential to a
person. Belonging to a family is imperative for one to develop wholly and according to the Vatican Information Service (2008), “the family is certainly a
grace of God which allows what He Himself is to be revealed.” This means that families allow us to communicate with God and feel his presence and love.
The Catholic World View on family can also be seen through Cardinal William J. Levada (2006), when he refers to family “as the principal cell or building
block of human society” when discussing it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He highlights how the theme of family fits into the doctrine of faith and
can help members in finding their vocation in loving and serving God.
My own teacher witness coincides with the Catholic outlook on family and upholds the same values and perspectives on its importance.
I believe family is a crucial aspect of the development of the human person and can have everlasting impacts on individuals good and bad. It is from our
families where we are exposed to values, beliefs, morals and experiences, which set us up for life and form us as individuals. It is from our families where
we get support and security, love and companionship, protection and strength and the ability to feel and experience God. In this unit of work I have
endeavoured to share a piece of my life with students in the hope to further develop a trusting and open relationship with them. I hope it gives the
students an insight to my own life experiences and journey and allows them to feel a deeper and more meaningful connection with myself, as well as the
content being explored. This has been done through simple additions in lessons such as bringing a family photo in, or sharing/reflecting on memories and
stories of my family and I etc. Through conducting this, students may gather a better understanding of the key learning points at focus within each step of
the process, and be able to draw upon their own experiences to make connections as well.

The rubric endeavours to assess student’s ability to revise the key understandings of the unit of work and convey that knowledge in in depth responses.
From weeks 1 -5 students will be given the opportunity to consolidate their learning and knowledge of key understandings/learning points in the form of a
PowerPoint. They are required to answer the following questions;
TITLE SLIDE
Week 1: “What are families and what did we learn about them?” –Step A
Week 2: “Who are the members of Jesus’ family?” –Step B
Week 3: “What are some examples of how we can love like Jesus towards our families even when we don’t want to?” –Step B

Slide 1:
Welcome to our parent information night. Tonight we will be discussing the Religious Education program for Term 3, 2019 in our Year 2 classroom. As parents
it is important to be kept updated with relevant information regarding your child and their education in order to create a cohesive, supportive and nurturing
learning environment for them between school and home. We will touch on and give a brief overview of the unit of work that will be covered, the key
learning points that will be explored, the steps of the process undertaken when teaching the unit work, what we are doing in the classroom, what you can do
at home and lastly assessment and reporting. If you have any queries, questions or concerns at any stage of the presentation please don’t hesitate to express
these.

Slide 2:
To begin I would love for you to join in an opening prayer. The theme of this opening prayer links with the theme of the unit of work your child will be
covering – Family. As we all know family is a huge aspect of each and everyone of us lives and can have great impact on our daily lives. During this prayer as
we read the words together, take the time to reflect on your own family, the love you all share, the memories you have created, the strength and courage
you have shown, and the guidance God has given you. Join with me in making the sign of the cross:

In the name of the father,

The son,
And the Holy Spirit,
Amen

Lord,
I want to thank You for this precious family of mine.
For the talents and good things that You have given each of us.
Please keep us united, and our bond strong as the days pass.
Please guide us, protect us and equip us to do Your will each and every day.
Thank You for all that You are, and all that You have given us.
My heart is forever grateful!

In the name of the father,

The son,
And the Holy Spirit,
Amen

Slide 3:
Gathered Together is the unit of work that the Year 2’s will be undertaking during the first 5 weeks of this Term. The unit is based around the human
salvation topic –

**Activity** – There are sticky notes going around, please take one and write on the sticky note what you think this unit of work will cover, or anything you
already know about the unit of work and come and stick it on the white board (discuss and read through answers).

The unit is taught through a series of steps. Step A endeavours to get students wondering at the human experience of belonging to a family, and at God who
gave us our families to love each of us personally. Step B explores Jesus and how he to belonged to a family and showed various ways of loving and caring for
his family members. It also explores how Jesus started the family of God (now known as the Church), which helps us draw to closer to God and each other
through various acts of prayer and celebration. Lastly step C explores ways in which members of God’s family are called by Jesus to love each other as he
loves them. Through these three key steps of the process and the key learning points students will develop a more in depth understanding and appreciation
of families and belonging to a community.

Slide 4:
Each RE unit of work is organised through these three specific steps. This diagram is referred to the steps of the process. The steps of the process identify the
key learning points each unit is required to teach. Each step has a key understanding and one or more key learning points. Step A is focused around
wondering at the creator. This is where students reflect at their own experiences, make meaning of them in a religious manner and understand what they
reveal about God. Step B is known as the promise of Christian salvation, which explores how Christ modelled the Christian promise and empowers us to live
like him. Finally Step C explores the Christian response, which mainly refers to how Christ’s power is experienced through his Church and other Christian
possibilities. As you can see on the slideshow, this diagram represents these three steps and the content (key understanding/learning points) that will be
explored in this particular unit of work – Gathered Together. These will be the focus of the unit of work and will be taught through reflective, engaging and
meaningful learning experiences with students. These will also form the basis of assessment and be a guide for both teachers and students to follow.

Slide 5:
Looking at this slide we see some key terminology that sums up the unit of work beautifully. Through participating in the learning experiences throughout the
unit of work and reflecting on their own experiences, students will gain a more in depth understanding/insight about these words and topics and how
important they are to the human person. Now I would love for you to take a moment in reading these words. I want you to reflect on these words and what
they mean to you and what your own understanding is about them. After a minute of reflection please turn to the people around you and discuss these
words, and why you think it is important for your son or daughter to have an appreciation/understanding about these (Share back & discuss). Thank you for
your contribution, I hope that was insightful for you and you too can see the value in your child learning these aspects during this unit of work.
Slide 6:
So what are we doing in the classroom to help your child throughout this unit of work? Firstly we will (as always) make the children feel safe and supported in
a positive and encouraging environment, where there is no judgement placed on their own experiences, beliefs or opinions. This is crucial, as we want to
ensure students feel valued and comfortable at all times. Secondly we have devised a really exciting learning program with various learning experiences
where your child will be able to explore the unit of work in an innovating, creative and transforming manner. This will be done through the incorporation and
integration of the arts, song and dance, ICT, Godly Plays, hands on and concrete activities etc. This approach will hopefully help motivate and inspire students
to express their experiences and understandings on topics in an engaging and stimulating way.

Slide 7:
Assessment is the backbone to both teaching and learning. It allows teachers to gather the necessary information to help monitor and observe student’s
progress and achievement. The plan, teach, assess cycle is the process in which teachers undertake to ensure they are planning appropriate learning
experiences, teaching them effectively and completing on going meaningful and authentic assessment. Throughout this unit of work this cycle will be
implemented and followed thoroughly in order to ensure the best success for students.

Slide 8:
During this unit of work various types of assessment will be performed to observe how your child is progressing. Different strategies such as; rubrics,
checklists, anecdotal notes, portfolios, peer and self-assessment, journal reflections, quizzes/tests etc. will be conducted throughout the learning program to
monitor progress, gauge student’s knowledge, check for understanding, and provide feedback on student learning.

Slide 9:
As previously mentioned it is vital that we endeavour to create a cohesive learning environment for students at both school and at home. This will be
beneficial for their learning and allow them to grasp and experience concepts being taught in school in a different and relevant context. Giving students the
opportunity to consolidate what they are learning in real life experiences is setting them up for success both in and out of the classroom and allow them to
intrinsically value and appreciate the content they are learning. So here is a list of things we encourage you to expose your child to at home, and partake with
them.

I want to thank you for your attendance and willingness to participate in tonight’s presentation. I hope you have gained a further and comprehensive insight
to the Religious Education your child will be partaking over the next five weeks and as excited as I am to support and guide them on this learning journey.

Opening prayer:
Let us pray

We thank you, Lord, for sending our own incarnate Son, to become part of a family, so that, as he lived his life, he would experience the family’s worries and
its joys. We ask you, Lord, to protect and watch over our families so that in the strength of your grace their members may enjoy the priceless gift of your
peace, alive in the home.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival.
When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in
the group of travellers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they
returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them
questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents* saw him they were astonished; and his mother said
to him, ‘Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.’ He said to them, ‘Why were you
searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them
and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.

Prayers of the faithful

Reader: As we celebrate and pray for families, we ask God to give us a generous spirit.
For the leaders of our Church family and the leaders of our country, grant them wisdom and courage as they show us how to be giving and
compassionate. Lord hear us.
All: Lord, hear our prayers.
For all our families and friends who give their love and encouragement to us, we thank you. Lord hear us.
All: Lord, hear our prayers.
For all mothers, particularly those who are pregnant, that they may be supported by loved ones and warm friends, and that they may be understood and
blessed. Lord hear us.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
For all Fathers or Guardians, particularly those who are young or troubled, that through the intercession of St Joseph, they might be able to love and care for
their families. Lord hear us.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
For all grandparents, Aunties and Uncles, that they may be blessed with a generosity of spirit and action and to continue to love us unconditionally. Lord hear
us.
All: Lord hear our prayer.
For those of us who may have lost a parents or guardian, we pray for eternal rest for them. Lord hear us.
All: Lord hear our prayer
Leader: God of family, God of love, forgive us for those times when we have forgotten how much we are loved by you, and how important a part we, as
children, play in in our families. Forgive us for the times we take our families for granted.
Amen.

Blessings for parents and guardians

Reader: Almighty God, You know what it is like to be both Mother and Father to us all. We ask You, the source and sustainer of all life, to bless all parents and
guardians in the role you have set before them.
Gift their lips with the wisdom to speak the truth so it can be heard.
Gift their ears with sensitivity as they listen to the needs of us, their children.
Gift their souls with a faith radiating your intimate presence in their life.
Gift their minds with patience and understanding to handle the changing needs and demands placed before them each day.
Guide their hearts as they seek out and reconcile the areas of conflict and pain that may exist.
Through all these things, may your abundant blessings continue to affirm and support all they do as parents and guardians.

We ask this blessing upon each of them, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Power of Your Love

Lord I come to You

Let my heart be changed, renewed
Flowing from the grace
That I've found in You
Lord I've come to know
The weaknesses I see in me
Will be stripped away
By the power of Your love
Hold me close
Let Your love surround me
Bring me near
Draw me to Your side
And as I wait
I'll rise up like the eagle
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love
Lord unveil my eyes
Let me see You face to face
The knowledge of Your love
As You live in me
Lord renew my mind
As Your will unfolds in my life
In living every day
By the power of Your love
Hold me close
Let Your love surround me
Bring me near
Draw me to Your side
And as I wait
I'll rise up like the eagle
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love
Hold me close
Let Your love surround me
Bring me near
Draw me to Your side
And as I wait
I'll rise up like the eagle
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love
