The Merak 2007.1 Suite Installation Guide
The Merak Suite DVD contains the current versions of all Merak applications. The DVD format
provides the option of installing more than one application at a time and offers access to
maintenance tools such as DBTools.
The Merak products support only one type of licensing. If you have not already converted your
current licensing method to FLEXlm, please contact the SIS Global Help Desk for information
about switching to FLEXlm licensing (see How to Reach us for contact information).
Caution:
Applications for which you do not have a license can be installed, but will not launch.
DO NOT upgrade to v2007 Merak products until the licensing conversion is complete. This
version will not run with any other licensing method (Rainbow sentinels/bitlocks, Merak License
Server, or CrypKey).
Before you begin
This guide provides the instructions for four types of installation: local (standalone), network,
terminal server, and custom installations. Please read through the workflow before performing any
of the instructions to ensure you are performing the correct installation for your work
environment. If you encounter any error messages during the installation procedures, see the Error
Codes document included on the Merakv 2007.1 DVD, or for troubleshooting tips, see

Pre-requisite installations
The Merak v2007.1 Suite software requires the following items be loaded on your system before
loading the Merak software:
• Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0
• MDAC 2.7 or 2.8;
• SQL Server: SQL2005 (either full edition or Express) or SQL 2000 (either full edition or
MSDE)
The installation will check for the presence of these pre-requisites when starting the installation
program. If any of the pre-requisites are missing, you will be prompted to install them before the
Merak Value & Risk software can be installed. If your system does not have the Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1, the installation will not allow you to continue until it is installed. If you do not
have MDAC 2.7 or 2.8, or SQL Server, you will be able to continue with the installation, but you
will not be able to use the applications or sample databases that accompany the Merak v2007.1
Suite.
If you are missing any of the pre-requisites, they can be obtained from the installation DVD in the

*The minimum requirement for MDAC is version 2.7. If you have MDAC 2.7 installed on your
system, the installation will proceed without warning. We distribute MDAC 2.8 on our
distribution DVDs, as it is the latest version of MDAC. If you want to install MDAC 2.7 instead,
please download the package from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/data.

Acrobat Release Notes.
\Resource\File Lists Excel spreadsheets containing complete lists of files for each
application. These are also available in the File Lists topic of this
Help system.
\Resource\FLEXlm The executables required to run FLEXlm as a service on a network.
Refer to chapter 6, Licensing, for more information.
\Resource\MDAC The MDAC directory contains procedures to set up MDAC for
2.8 Windows 2000/XP. Merak software can use either MDAC 2.7 or 2.8.
\Resource\Microsoft The installation for the .NET Framework 1.1. This installation will be
.NET Framework used primarily by users who are performing their own installation.

\Resource\Sample The new Merak sample databases, in both secure and unsecure
Databases formats.
\Resource\Wellbore The Wellbore Schematic Directory contains the installation routines
Schematic Directory for the Wellbore Schematic tool used by PetroDesk.
\Resource\Windows The installation routines for the Windows Installer and InstallShield
Installer Scripting Language. Windows XP Service Pack 2 ships with
Windows Installer 3.0.

General issues
Note:
Use of software versions outside of those identified for the Merak Suite of software will
likely cause application failure and are not supported. This includes versions of Oracle, SQL
Server, ODBC, and MDAC other than those specified in this guide. Please ensure that the
version you are attempting to run complies with the supported versions in the install guide.
If you are uncertain what versions you currently have installed, or if you are looking for the
latest update(s), please contact our SIS Help Desk..
Database tables
SIS provides scripts to create database tables for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. A SQL 2005
database is also supplied. You are required to use the tables supplied by SIS for the Merak product
databases to operate properly.
Note:
Contact your local SIS Global Help Desk to request complete database tables.
ODBC drivers
Merak Windows applications require the installation of Microsoft ODBC drivers. These drivers
become part of the Windows operating environment and allow Merak applications to transfer data
to and from any ODBC compliant database (SQL Server, or Oracle).
Many popular software packages such as Microsoft Office will install ODBC drivers on your
system that are not compatible with the Merak applications. The ODBC drivers must be updated
to MDAC 2.7 or 2.8.
SIS ships the required ODBC drivers (SQL Server) with all Windows products except Decision
Tool Kit, which does not require ODBC. To ensure compatibility, it is important to use the drivers
that are supplied with the installation CD.
Caution:
Even if your version of SQL Server states that MDAC Version 2.7 or 2.8 has been installed,
this is not necessarily the case. You should replace it with the version supplied by SIS to
avoid compatibility problems.
Database security
All large database systems are protected, and require an additional user ID and password to access
the database. Your Database Administrator sets each account, assigned to either an individual or a
group, when Merak software is installed.
Note:
Contact your Database Administrator if you have difficulties accessing your database.

General issues
DLL versions
The most common cause of installation and maintenance problems with Merak’s Windows
software is DLL (Dynamic Link Libraries) file version control and compatibility.
It is preferred, and at times required, that you run the latest commercial release of the required sub
system DLL files from vendors such as Microsoft. SIS has taken great pains to ensure that all
installation programs check version numbers and dates before overwriting any system DLL files.
SIS installation programs will not overwrite newer DLLs with older versions.
Installation of some third party software such as Microsoft Office or Lotus SmartSuite can cause
system failure by overwriting newer versions of system DLL files with older versions.
If problems or errors occur with a Merak application after installation, check the program file list
in the Appendix to ensure you are running the correct DLL and re-install the program if the
required version has been overwritten.

Selecting a database
All of Merak’s Windows applications require the installation of an underlying Database
Management System (DBMS). Merak products support the following systems:
• Oracle 9i/10g (appropriate for more than three users)
• Microsoft SQL Server 2005(including Express) and 2000(including MSDE) (appropriate
for more than three users)
Oracle 9.2.0/10.2.0.1
Oracle is recommended for sites with more than three users and provides full corporate database
standardization and scalability. Merak products may be added to existing Oracle servers or placed
on dedicated servers depending on the relative loading and demand. Data storage sizes and host
machine sizing can be matched to work for 2 - 2000 simultaneous users. Please note that you are
responsible for obtaining/purchasing the appropriate Oracle software, as well as for installation
and maintenance.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 / Express
Microsoft SQL Server is recommended for sites with more than three users, and provides an
industrial strength database while requiring less maintenance than Oracle. Written specifically for
Windows 2000, it provides a friendly front end to database configuration. It is scalable for larger
solutions with the support of RISC-based hardware (DEC Alpha, Power PC, or MIPS)
implementations of Windows 2000, and provides some advanced data replication options for Wide
Area Network installations. Please note that you are responsible for obtaining/purchasing the
appropriate SQL Server software, as well as for installation and maintenance.

It should be noted that these are base requirements and enhanced configurations may be needed to
meet specific performance criteria.
The release notes for all products require Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or better. If you require this
installation, you can retrieve it at www.adobe.com.
Note:
Merak software installed on Windows Millennium (Me) is not recommended and not
supported.
Due to the requirements of the .NET Framework, Windows NT 4 Terminal Server Edition is
no longer supported.
