                               Editorial
Exotic animals are sometimes great pets. I do own one and
depending on the type of exotic animal they are a lot of care.If you
have a bird you must have its wings clipped, nails, and teeth filed
down also you will need a lot of room for a big cage the bird may be
small but they need room to move and you will need to get them out of
the cage many times a day and make sure they have toys and stuff to
chew on.they are like kids so I advice picking up important papers
because they will chew and go to the bathroom were ever so at all
times I would keep baby wipes with you because it makes it easy to
clean up.
Many people who have exotic pets have lots of space and if this
is not what you have then this is not a type of pet for you.you need to
have the time the money and the space. Exotic pets can range from $
40-250.If you have the money the time and the willingness to care for
this pet. This may be a good pet for you. These animals are exotic
meaning they dont usally keep or have them as pets because they are
exotic if you like to cuddle and lay or nap with something get a dog
because they are small and the smallest movement could posibly hurt
them. That why if you are young and not very careful or accident prone
this may not be the best animal for you. Many people dont understand
the responsibility of an animal because you have to give them a lot of
attention just like a puppy but a lot smaller and exotic.

                                              Fennac fox
The fennec fox is a small fox found in the Sahara Desert of North Africa (excluding the coast) which has
distinctive oversized ears. The fennec is the smallest canid. The animals are often a sandy color and
blend in with their desert surroundings. Their ears, which are the largest in the canid family, serve to help
dissipate heat. Their coat can repel sunlight during the day and conserve heat at night. The soles of of a
fennec's feet are protected from the hot sand by thick fur.
The fennec fox is nocturnal. During the night, they will hunt for rodents, insects (such as locusts), lizards,
birds and eggs. Fennec foxes gets most of their water from food, but will sometimes eat berries and
leaves as an additional source of water.
Fennecs live in large dens, often with several foxes. The basic social unit is thought to be a mated pair
and their offspring, and the young of the previous year are believed to remain in the family even after a
new litter is born. Playing behavior is common, including among adults of the species.
Fennecs engage in highly social behavior, typically resting while in contact with each other. They mate for
life, with each pair or family controlling their own territory. Sexual maturity is reached at around nine
months old. The species usually breeds only once each year. The copulation tie has been recorded as
lasting up to two hours and 45 minutes. Following mating, the male becomes very aggressive and
protective of the female, providing her with food during her pregnancy and lactation periods. Gestation is
usually between 50 to 52 days. The typical litter is between one and four kits, with weaning taking place
at around 61 to 70 days. When born, the kit's ears are folded over and their eyes are closed, with the eyes
opening at around ten days and the ears lifting soon afterwards. The life span of a fennec fox has been
recorded as up to 12 years in captivity, and up to 10 years in the wild.
The fennec is rare and is not often seen. They are often hunted by humans, even though the fox does not
cause any harm to human interests.
Fennecs are common victims of the animal entertainment industry. They are often found on display at
zoos, roadside zoos and "wildlife safaris". Like all captive wildlife, they face constant stress and are
denied their wild nature, strong family bonds and natural social interactions. The needs and desires of
humans comes before the needs of the animals in the animal entertainment industry.
Highly intelligent and social animals, they also suffer terribly in the inhumane pet trade. Sold like toys by
unethical businesses and backyard breeders, profit is put above the welfare of the animals. Unprepared
guardians purchase the animals, often with little knowledge on their care. Their complex physical,
psychological and social needs can never be met when they are kept as pets.
How to take care of an exotic pets
Here are some easy tip on how to take care of an exotic animal.First
you will need to clean cage even if it is new you want any scent besides
your off of their then you will want to put the new toys in the cage you
will need to get new toys every month so the animal won't get bored
there like kids you will also need to put the water dish or dispenser in
cage.you will need to clean the water dispencer so they can have clean
water and minerails get into the mouth peice and this could cause thrm
not to drink Give the animal half cup of food this will probably last 1-2
days depending on the animal.i would urge you to put the begging in
before the rest of the stuff you have for your animal.you will need to play
with your pets 3-5 times a day. when your cage is ready and your ready
put your pet in the cage. The animal is like a person they need privicy to
sleep so get a box and some fabric and then put it in the cage many
people think that they sleep during the night and are up in the day like
most of us but they are not they sleep when they wont and are awake
    when they wont.
● Housing – Providing the right housing and bedding is extremely
important when it comes to the health and safety of exotic pets.
Enclosures should be roomy enough to allow for exercise and secure
enough to prevent escape. Proper lighting, temperature, and humidity
are important for many species of reptiles. Rodents, such as hamsters
and rabbits, will need their bedding changed weekly.
● Nutrition – Individual species have very specific nutritional
requirements. In many cases, even a slight variation from the
recommended diet can have negative consequences for your pet. Some
exotic pets also require supplements to meet their dietary needs.
● Habits and behaviors – Before adopting any species of pet, it’s
important to understand their unique behaviors and social needs.
Guinea pigs, for example, do better when paired with another guinea
pig. Mice and hamsters are more active at night, while birds like to start
    their days bright and early.
In my opinion a hedgehog is the most
easy to take care of when it comes to
hedgehog or bunny .they are very simple
they same may be for the bunnies but
having an exotic animal and being around
the animals i have lots of experience with
them they are really loveable and they like
to cuddle. The hedgehog is not the
cuddliest animal ever but they love to sit on
beds couches and but you have to watch
them because they both love to chew on
cordes and can get sick from the rubber
Which is around the coard. I would get the like a
flower to chew on or a small sticks
because this keeps them occupied and
the also keeps their teeth short
better They hedgehog can live from
2 to 5 years and bunnies
pet live from 7 to 10 years.
Both of these animals need lots of care
time and effection. They love to be out of
the cage and play or cuddle.while you out
the animal stays in the cage all lonely
they should be taken out when get home
and played with. Both animals will need
toys to play with and be entertained. Both
animal like to chew on things and both
           like to hide in tunnels.

Her responce was “1 year and 7 months.”
Did you bond with your animal at first ?
“He was scared at first but then they both got to know and warm up to

“Taking care of hedgehog is not simple at first.” You will have to buy a
cage, bedding, food, and a little pouch for privacy to sleep.they are asleep
in the morning and awake at night.you should clean clean the cage once
every week due to their health.you should take it out of the cage at least
once or twice a day during the winter and every day during the
summer.they love to play in the grass and also like to sun bathe.must
keep in house during winter due to the harsh cold and can take them out
in the summer. They should be in inclosed areas or keept an eye on. You
cant give them baths in the winter. In the summer you give them 4 to 5
baths.when they feel threatened they roll up into a ball and their quills go
in all different directions.when feeding them they usally eat cat food only
with chicken proten. You can get regular hedgehog food.
In the winter if your hedgehog gets sick you feed them tums and
mealworms.

Many people in the united states have bearded dragons they are really easy to take care of
and dont really need much attention.you will need to get them a light because they bathe in the
light and will also need fake logs to lay under. They eat crickets. These pets a very good around
people they see everyday but when they are around new people they have natural instincts and
they use them when they feel threatened
Sometimes hedgehogs will lick salt from sweaty hands and become tempted to bite, becaus
they like the salty taste. When a hedgehog bites due to taste and smell it is exhibiting normal, but
unacceptable behavior. This is the most common reason for biting and the easiest to avoid. When
hedgehog encounters a new smell, he will often lick to taste test. Lotions, soaps and perfumes can be ne
and interesting for a hedgehog and they may like the taste of certain products. Licking is also common th
first month in a new home as your hedgehog becomes accustomed to new smells.
When chinchillas are properly handled, tamed, and socialized, they do not bite unless
provoked. Youngchinchillas should be taught early how hard a nibble is acceptable by lightly
tapping the nose and firmly saying “no”. Repeat this with any painful nibble until thechinchilla
begins to use softer nibbles.

              hedgehogs
Unlike most other pocket pets, hedgehogs are considered insectivores and these
snouted critters have quite the taste for things that creep and crawl. Mealwormsand
crickets are the most commonly fed insects in captivity but the staple diet for a
hedgehog should be a store-bought, specially formulated hedgehog kibble. This kibble
has mashed up insects along with vitamins and minerals to create a balanced diet
specifically formulated for an African pygmy hedgehog. Many owners and breeders still
feed kitten food to their hedgehogs but this is not ideal since cat food does not contain
blood meal and chitin in it.
Cages made for guinea pigs and rabbits are suitable for hedgehogs but wire
grate cage bottoms should be avoided since hedgehogs have small feet that will be
injured if they fall through these grates. A soft bedding such as a recycled paper
material or towels that are changed out regularly are best for the sensitive feet of a
hedgehog.
A large enclosed running wheel should be kept in the cage for your hedgie to exercise
in along with a hide box, food bowl, and water bottle. Make sure the running wheel is
cleaned regularly to avoid fecal matter from building up which can cause foot
infections.
Hedgehogs are very active at night and will run several miles a day on their wheel or in
their enclosed play area. If they are unable to get the large amount of exercise they
require they may become depressed, overweight, and develop foot sores. Exercise
and activity is very important to hedgehogs so potential owners should be able to
commit to be able to provide a hedgehog with the space necessary to do so.
hedgehogs obviously have a lot of prickly spines but that doesn't mean they
aren't fun to hold. Tame hedgehogs will crawl into your hands, take treats from you and
even enjoy being carried for a bit. Younger hedgehogs are easier to tame than older
ones, therefore your best chance to having a hedgehog that loves being held is by
getting one at about six to eight weeks of age.
Typically, hedgehogs don't like their heads being pet and will roll into spiked balls when
scared. Since hedgehogs aren't big fans of water, if you are having trouble cleaning
your hedgehog's feet, try placing it in a shallow bath where just its legs are immersed in
water or have it walk on a wet towel.
Why does my hedgehog lick my hands
When a hedgehog encounters a new smell, he will often lick to taste test. Lotions, soaps and
perfumes can be new and interesting for a hedgehog and they may like the taste of certain
products. Licking is also common the first month in a new home as your hedgehog becomes
accustomed to new smells.
Some hedgehogs like to taste test more than others, but when it comes to fingers, it should
definitely be discouraged. Licking is often followed by biting and/or self-anointing. Self-anointing is
when a hedgehog encounters an unusual smell and then begins to lick and bite the object,
produce foamy saliva, and spread the foam onto his quills with his tongue.
Some hedgehogs may like the taste of sweaty palms and some owners have mistaken that as a
need for salt in their diet. However, salt should not be added to a hedgehog’s diet as it can cause
health problems.
Washing your hands prior to handling your hedgie should help prevent licking and biting. Some
owners use hand sanitizer to prevent this behavior.
 Bearded dragon news
                        *Things bearded dragons now require*
Hiding Huts
In order for your bearded dragon to feel safe and secure you should supply a place for him
to hide. There are many different styles available at pet stores which will provide a great
spot to hide.
There are rock caves, half-round tree bark pieces, or you can get creative and make a hide
out yourself. Just make sure it is large enough for your bearded dragon to fit into, and the
entrance is easy to access.
Food & Water Bowls
It goes without saying that feeding your bearded dragon will be difficult without a food bowl.
There are many different food bowl options to choose from in the market today. Most pet
stores will offer a good selection of attractive food bowls.
Make sure to locate food bowls in an area that’s easy for the bearded dragon to find, and
away from any heat sources. Basking bulbs can quickly spoil any vegetables and fruit
offered if they are placed near the basking area.
If you have a very small baby bearded dragon, use a shallow bowl that makes it easy for him
to see and reach.
Although bearded dragons do not typically drink from water bowls (they can not detect
water that is standing still) a water bowl with fresh, dechlorinated water should still be
supplied. Make sure the depth of the water bowl is not so deep that your bearded dragon
could drown. A shallow bowl, less than an inch in depth, should work perfectly.
Food and water bowls should be emptied and cleaned each day. You don’t want to leave
spoiling food left in the enclosure overnight. Water should be replaced with fresh,
dechlorinated water each day as well.

                New Tarantula Species
Collected as part of the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project, which aims to
uncover the undersampled biodiversity in the entire Okavango catchment of Angola,
Namibia and Botswana, thereby paving the way for sustainable conservation in the area,
the new arachnid is described in a paper published in the open-access journal African
Invertebrates by the team of Drs John Midgley and Ian Engelbrecht.
Although the new spider (Ceratogyrus attonitifer sp.n.) belongs to a group known as
horned baboon spiders, the peculiar protuberance is not present in all of these species.
Moreover, in the other species -- where it is -- the structure is completely sclerotised,
whereas the Angolan specimens demonstrate a soft and characteristically longer 'horn'.
The function of the curious structure remains unknown.
The new tarantula's extraordinary morphology has also prompted its species name: C.
attonitifer, which is derived from the Latin root attonit- ("astonishment" or "fascination"),
and the suffix -fer ("bearer of" or "carrier"). It refers to the astonishment of the authors
upon the discovery of the remarkable species.
"No other spider in the world possesses a similar foveal protuberance," comment the
authors of the paper.

Bedford Hills, N.Y., veterinarian Laurie Hess keeps a busy schedule,
providing checkups, emergency services and other procedures for her
patients, along with help from their human owners. But you won’t see any
dogs or cats at Hess’s clinic. She limits her practice to lizards, ferrets, birds,
turtles and assorted creatures, ranging from Chinese water dragons and
Chinese pygmy hamsters to chinchillas and kinkajous. If you don’t know
what these are, you’re probably not familiar with the world of exotic pets.
(Answer: The kinkajou is an adorable little primate from Central and South
America related to the raccoon. It hails from the rainforest and is sometimes
called a “honey bear.”) While cats and dogs are still tops in the world of pets,
19.4 million U.S. households owned exotics in 2013, according to the
American Pet Products Association. The term “exotic pet” is loosely defined
as anything but cats, dogs, fish or horses. For veterinarians, the category
generally consists of reptiles and amphibians, birds and small
mammals. Some of the most popular are those on the tame end of the
spectrum—rabbits, turtles, hamsters, guinea pigs and even poultry. Exotics
often offer advantages as alternative pets. They can be suitable for people
with allergies to furry things, and many require less space than cats or dogs.
