                                                        Your
Good to see you back Toby from words
your holiday! Today, I saw you in here...
  this little corner reading and
 revisiting your past experiences.
    You looked at the previous
   learning experiences that you
were engaged in. You had heaps
Toby! From painting to exploring
 the outside environment to your
transition to the Butterfly Room,
 what great learning experiences
you had in there! And today, you
all managed to look back at
   those lovely and meaningful
      learning experiences.
                                         We encountered your
                                       learning story about the
                                       dinosaurs and just after
                                        reading it, you stood up
                                         and went to the book
                                        shelf. I was waiting on
your next move until I saw
                                        you carrying a book and
                                     walking towards where we
                                       read your portfolio. You
                                       whispered, “Rose, can we
read this book?” and I said,
                                      “Okay Toby, we’ll read the
                                         book together.”. You
flipped the page and I read
                                       the story. You looked at
                                      the picture carefully and
                                        tried to make your own
                                         interpretation of the
                                               pictures.
             WHY IS
             ALADAR
                                                              WHY DOES HE
            GETTING
                                                                GROW?
            BIGGER?
                                                                   WHY DON’T
                                                                   THEY HAVE
                                                                  WATER? THEY
                                                                NEED WATER ‘COZ
                                                                  THEY’LL GET
                                                                   THIRSTY.
And your interest in reading books continues. After we finished the book
that we were reading just a while ago, you took again a new book from the
shelf and handed it to me. It’s about “Dinosaurs!”. We began reading it. As
we go on to browsing the pages, I saw how you looked at the pictures and
listened attentively to me. It’s as if you were really trying to understand
what it meant by what I was talking about. You raised some good questions
and we were able to discuss further your thoughts and ideas which led us to
a meaningful conversation. You asked “Rose, is this Aladar? and I said, “Yes
he’s Aladar. He has grown up.”. And that triggered you to ask about why do
we grow? To make my explanation clear to you, I had to explain to you your
own journey of becoming the Toby that you are right now.
                                                                      wHY
                                                                    ARE THEY
                                                                   NOT BEING
                                                                   FRIENDS?
                                                      For the past days toby,
                                                      I have been looking
                                                      forward to our
                                                      reading session. I
                                                      love that we are having
                                                      this opportunity
                                                      because I am getting
                                                      to know you more. you
have a lot of things in
                                                      your mind. Your ideas
                                                      and questions are just
                                                      so impressive.
TODAY TOBY, I INVITED YOU TO GET
THE BASKET OF BOOKS IN THE
 HALLWAY BECAUSE WE’VE ALMOST
FINISHED ALL THE BOOKS IN THE
SHELF. YOU WERE SO EXCITED AS
THERE WOULD BE NEW SETS OF
    STORIES THAT WE’D READ
 TOGETHER. AND RIGHT AFTER WE
GOT THE BOOKS OUT, YOU CHOSE A
BOOK AND WE STARTED EXPLORING
        THE PAGES OF IT.
 AFTER MORNING TEA, YOU SPOTTED
  THE GINGERBREAD MAN BOOK AT
THE SHELF AND YOU ASKED ME IF I
      COULD READ IT FOR YOU.
“OFCOURSE!”, I MUTTERED. LOOK AT
HOW YOU ATTENTIVELY LISTENED TO
MY STORY TOBY! YOUR EYES WERE
NOT BLINKING AT ALL AS YOU WOULD
NOT WANT TO MISS ANY PART OF THE
             STORY.
LOOKS LIKE EVERY DAY THERE’S A STORY
SESSION THAT YOU HAVE BEEN
ENGAGED IN TOBY! TODAY, IT’S NOT
WITH ME BUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS,
ANNIKA AND ELLA. YOU SAT AND
attentively listened as annika
showed you the book about kittens.
Just yesterday you were browsing
this book and now, you were
exploring the pages again with your
friends. You participated well in the
discussion. Annika would say
something and you would sometimes
raise some good points. You and
Ella shared good ideas as you
discussed the story. It’s nice that
you are learning and exploring
ideas alongside other children too,
Toby!
I set up this learning experience to
extend your interest in dinosaurs and
stories. I thought it would be nice for
us to recreate the stories that we’ve
been reading in books. And so I sat
next to you and your friends. Before
starting, I asked if you would like the
idea creating a story and reenacting it
through the use of the dinosaurs that
you were holding. You excitedly said,
“YEs!” and so we began the story:
Once upon a time, there were 5
 dinosaurs: Annikasaurus, ellasaurus,
     tobysaurus, eddiesaurus and
louisaurus. They were playing in the
mud. And there’s one taking a bath.
suddenly, ella arrived and tobysaurus
asked her “Do you want some
chocolates ellasaurus? let’s go find
some in the mud!”. The end!
Early this morning, you handed me a book
entitled “Hide and Seek!”. “Rose, can you
read this book?” and so we headed to the
literacy area. The excitement in your face
became visible as I started reading the
first page. “Rose, can I flip the page” you
asked before I flipped the page where it
would reveal who was hiding. But before
we finally revealed who that was, I asked
first if you could guess it. You said,
“Hippo!”. I wondered why and you said,
“Because of that! (pointing to the rocky
shaped objects in the picture). “Boo! it
was hippo!”, as I revealed the animal
hiding. The following pages got more
exciting as more animals were being
revealed. The smile on your face was
there since the beginning of the story
until the end which only means that you
           enjoyed the story a lot!
                                              Your words here...
And because you enjoyed the “Hide and
Seek” book that we read this morning,
I wasn’t surprised when you asked me
if we could play hide and seek outside
   too! Immediately after lunch, you
came and asked me if we could play it
outside. Just after a few minutes, I
   found myself counting from 1-10
while you were finding the best place
to hide. I tried looking at the bushes
but couldn’t find you there. Until I
heard a sound coming from under the
boxes, and there you were with Ella
and Annika hiding from me! “Boo,
Toby!”, I said. Look at that happy face
of yours Toby! It seemed like you
really had fun with this game! What a
good extension of what we’ve just
           read a while ago.
It was a quiet afternoon outside as a
lot of children were sleeping and some
of them were inside engaging in
different learning experiences. Here we
were toby finding something to do. I
saw the opportunity of another role
playing because I did it with the children
a while ago. I asked, “Toby, would you
like us to role play the three little
pigs?”. You were a bit confused with
what I said and so I said, “Let’s pretend
that I am the wolf and you and your
friends are the pigs.”. Your face
brightened! You immediately said that you
would like to build the house of sticks.
We looked for the things we needed
before we started the role playing. It
was fun seeing that you really made the
effort to collect some sticks so you
could build your house of sticks. We all
did our part. We began our “story”. We
did the same as what we all know about
the story of “Three Little Pigs”. You and
your friends did your part and acted so
well. At the end of the story, I saw you
collecting some sticks and wood again
and I wondered what those for until I
realized the scene in the book wherein
the pigs set up a fire for the wolf. You
really know the whole story, Toby!
Well done!
Hi toby, it was so nice to be part this
extraordinary learning journey. We
started from just reading books,
sharing ideas through our discussion and
now it has been extended through your
own engagement in role playing of the
books that we read. I love your
enthusiasm Toby. You have learned to
explore and unleash your potential of
becoming a creative and imaginative
learner. You communicate and express
your thoughts clearly to the audience. I
am happy to see your growing
confidence. Until our next story telling
time toby! :)
