Dear Zoo

Mohammad showed interest in the book "Dear Zoo" by exploring it carefully and matching plastic animals to the pages. He turned the pages correctly and knew how books are read, even though Arabic books are read in the opposite direction. Mohammad enjoyed making animal noises and shared his knowledge of animals with a friend. The teacher was pleased with Mohammad's development of pre-literacy skills and respect for books.

Dear zoo

Mohammad Alomki

3/09/2018 Teacher Liz

Dear Zoo is definitely a firm favourite with all the children, you picked it
up and sat down at the table and began to explore the book alongside
the plastic animals.
I saw you taking and interest and then exploring with your friend beside
you. You had made a choice and remained focussed on it for a sus-
tained period of time
I saw that you knew how to turn the pages carefully and you knew
which way to “read” the story. I found it interesting that you knew
which way the book went as the Arabic books are read in the oppo-
site direction. These are pre-literacy skills in recognising how to use
a book and that the words and pictures have a meaning and can be
read.
You began matching the animals to the pages and followed by the nois-
es they make. You thought you were hilarious! You are sharing your
knowledge and understanding of animals and matching.

Mohammad Alomki, it was a pleasure to observe your interest in Dear

Zoo today, I liked how you were able to extend your own experience by
adding the plastic animals and learning alongside a friend. I loved see-
ing you be respectful to our books today and you showed me that you
understand how to use a book. You are developing pre-literacy skills
(taking an interest, turning pages, growing understanding of the mean-
ing of pictures and text mean) and I believe the most important part of
your experience today was taking an interest.
Now that I know that you enjoy animals and books I will provide more
creative opportunities for you to explore books and animals together.

Communication—Children develop communication skills for a range of

purposes, they experience an environment rich in language & literacy,
which they have freedom
to explore at their own
interest and pace.
