LESSON 1
RESPONSIVENESS TO THE PUBLIC
I. How can you show Responsiveness? What realizations did you gain from
this session? List down below your answer. (page 26)
To be responsive means to satisfy or meet the needs or desires of the people in our
democratic society and accomplishing maximum results at a lower cost. It is to
create connections with people regardless of their age, race, religion, economic
status and the like; they should be treated with respect and integrity. I meet people
from all walks of life every day at the hospital and I attend to them with a smile from
the moment they step in. I respond to them with proper information that could help
them realize more of our institution in an understandable way.
There are many ways on how I can show responsiveness to the public. One way is
acting promptly on clients’ requests. I won’t keep them wait for too long. I should be
more polite and patient. Well, being polite to people costs nothing and it can help
me earn respect of my colleagues and as well as the people I serve. Patience and
tolerance are also vital in dealing with people. Being able to understand other
people’s feelings is also a great skill, which will enable me to be more tolerant of
their behavior and eventually serve them effectively. Also, I always prioritize the
elderly, pregnant women and the person’s with disability not because it was
mandated by the corporation but because for me it is equality. We give them better
consideration because it is right and just. It implies that I am putting myself
voluntarily into a role that fills their need, or I am putting myself lower than them to
able to raise them up.
As a public servant, I continue to feel an undiminished pride especially when I hear
grateful words from people knowing that I am in a company that has a bright future,
kinder and gentler environment due to the personal investment of labors of the
employees. I will listen closely and respectfully to the critics so that I can build a
partnership with the locals and to be able to continue to look for ways to improve
how each of us, especially the front-line staff, to focus on outcomes to overcome
boundaries or gap among people whether rich or poor, to deliver our services more
effectively and more efficiently.
NATIONALISM AND PARTRIOTISM
My Feelings as a Filipino
The Filipino spirit makes me proud to be Filipino. Time and again, we are put to a
test through crisis and calamity, we pick up the pieces together and stand up as one.
There is an invisible force that makes the Filipino vulnerable yet invincible . We have
so much to give. We laugh hard and we love even harder. Now more than ever is the
time to be proud to be Pinoy!
A. How do you feel now for the country? Do you now feel a sense of pride for
our country knowing how "powerful" Filipinos are as people? How would you
show your love for our country? How much do you care about our country?
Write your responses below or in one sheet of paper. (page 31)
These past months we have witnessed a series of negative events that rocked our
country. It was news not only here but abroad as well. From all the calamities, crimes
and killings, those events remind us not to lose hope and to show the world that we
Filipinos are a great, loving and strong people.
Watching how our fellowmen who were typhoon victims, face the terrible
devastation that hit their homes and killed their loved ones, how they picked up the
broken pieces of their lives, how they continued to live most especially for others in
spite of all their pain, how they could still manage to smile and even help their
neighbors. It truly brought back that pride of what being a Filipino truly is. Seeing
every Filipino ready to help each other is inspiring and enough to feel proud to be a
Filipino.
All of us love our country and every day is the best time we can show our love for
country through action. One can show love for country by sacrificing personal
interest for the good of the majority. That’s how progress is achieved, when people
unite to put country above self. You do not need to be in government wielding power
or belong to a platform foisting influence to give something back to your country: you
only have to do the best with what you can do with the greatest proficiency and
dedication. The collective effort of people performing their duties as committed
citizens, focused on a national vision for the greater good and not individual vested
interests, will certainly yield a far brighter future for the nation. Lastly, We can show
love of country by sharing with our countrymen what God has blessed us with so
they may see His love through our generosity. In giving, we find true joy and love,
and a greater reward awaits us in heaven.
The welfare of our country is in our hands, and so are the ways to make it happen
and prosper. Let us thank God that He has placed us in this country. Though we
may have so many problems, yet we can see that we are truly blessed by God as a
people.

COMMITMENT TO DEMOCRACY
I. Write in one paragraph your feelings or insights about the importance of
democracy in a free and just society? (page 35)
In a free and just society a democracy is a good idea. This means that everyone will
have a say and can vote to make their world what they want it to be. There is
independence in democracy. There is direct participation by the public. Everyone is
qualified to participate in their deliberation on social, economic and political issues.
One important aspect of democracy is our election where people cast their votes to
people whom they think deserve to win and rule the nation. And eventually, those
elected government officials and employees will be accountable to people. In a
democratic country like ours, we enjoy our freedom and human rights. Our
sentiments are heard and we are free to discuss, argue and decide matters for
the common good. More than anything, we are a government of law and nobody
therefore is over and above the law, even the highest officers of the land, the
President, is the mere creation of the law. No matter what status one has in society,
we are all equal; and there is no exemption.
SIMPLE LIVING
Write your insights by completing the following sentences. You can come up
with as many sentences as you can. (page 39)
I feel.....
I feel that living a simple life is about paring back, so that you have space to breathe.
I feel that living simply entails stripping away the nonessential and focusing your time
and energy on the things that matter the most. I feel that the best kind of simplicity is
that which exposes the raw beauty, joy and heartbreak of life as it is.
I realize.....
I realize that that owning less can definitely help you with your problems but only if
you’re willing to take the next step. It’s about doing with less, because you realize
that having more and doing more doesn’t lead to happiness. I realize that it is about
finding joy in the simple things, and being content with solitude, quiet, contemplation
and savoring the moment. There is a lot of learning, experimenting and growing
involved and it’s anything but simple.
I will.....
I will be mindful of attachments that lead to clutter and complexity. I will Simplify
activities, obligations and daily routines. I will Find joy in a few simple things. I will get
clear about what I want, and say no to more things. I will practice doing nothing,
exquisitely.
