CARING FOR THE BODY

care of the body and health.

Maintaining personal hygiene is necessary for many reasons; to oneself, to others, for
health, mental and emotional status or simply as a way of life.
1. Good hygiene prevents the development and spread of BAD __ __ __ __ and

2. Maintaining hygiene practices helps __ E __ __ __ E the risks of illnesses.
3. Maintaining hygiene practices affects how we and others perceive us.

G _ _ D _ _ _ _ M _ _ G – means being neat, clean, attractive, and having a pleasing


personal appearance. It includes proper and suitable dressing and good posture.

 Importance of Good Grooming


1. It shows that you respect yourself, so others will respect you.
2. It helps you relate with others.
3. It boosts your self-confidence.
4. It makes you look and feel good.
5. It helps you gain and keep a lot of friends.

1. Body/Physical Care (Taking a bath, and cleaning ears and nose)


1. Wet your body with clean water.
2. Apply and lather the bath soap onto your whole body. You may use a small
towel to scrub parts of your body.
3. Rinse your body thoroughly with water.
4. After rinsing dry yourself with a clean bath towel.
5. Put on clean underwear and clothes.
6. Use an ear pick in cleaning the inner part of your ear and cotton buds for
the outer part of your ears.

2. Hair Care
1. Shampoo your hair as often as needed. Choose the right shampoo for your
hair type.
2. Apply conditioner every other day and rinse hair thoroughly.
3. Dry your hair with a clean towel.
4. Brush your hair until it dries up.

3. Dental Care
1. Brush your teeth after each meal. When brushing, pay attention to the
inside and outside surfaces of the front, back, upper and lower teeth.
2. Gargle your mouth with water thoroughly.
3. Use a mouthwash to take off bacteria.
4. Use a dental floss to remove bits of food stuck in between teeth and to
prevent cavities.

4. Care of Hands and Feet


1. Use clean water and soap to wash your hands and feet.
2. Lather and rub your hands/feet with soap. Scrub each finger or toe gently.
3. Clean nails by using a soft brush.
4. Rinse it well with water and use a clean towel for drying.
5. When cutting the nails, cut them across to prevent ingrown.

1. Taking a bath. Accumulated body wastes are taken off when thorough
cleansing of the body is done.
2. Hair Care. Healthy hair makes you look attractive. It is important to give
attention and care to your hair. Brushing your hair helps stimulate blood
circulation, thus making the scalp healthy.
3. Dental Care. We become readier to smile with confidence if we have healthy
teeth. Teeth should be kept clean, healthy and strong.
4. Care of hands and feet. The hands are the most prone to dirt and the feet are
among the most neglected parts of the body.

What are the things needed to keep you clean?

__ __ __ __ __ __ __ refers to how one carry or position the body while sitting, standing,
and walking. Good posture helps improve one’s physique and it also contributes to
good health.

 Exercises for Good Posture

Here are easy exercises to do to achieve good posture:


1) Balance a book on your head. Try walking, sitting, and
standing without the book falling off from your head.
2) Walk on a straight line while balancing with both hands
raised sideward.
3) Balance the weight of your body by raising forward
your foot alternately.
4) Do stretching exercises to firm up shoulder, back, and
hip muscles.

Follow the instructions below:
a. For shoulders
Bend arms from your elbow at shoulder level. Bend back
elbows as far as you can reach (count 1, 2, and 3).

b. For back and hips


Assume a stride sitting position. Bend forward by
extending arms as far as you can reach (count 1, 2 and
3). Go back to the original position (count 4).

 Food for Strong Bones


Eat different kinds of food rich in __ __ L __ I __ __ and __ __ __ SP __ __ __ __ __.
It helps make your bones strong. Strong bones help to achieve good posture.

Osteoporosis or the brittling of the bones Poorly developed bones and teeth, slow
is a common bone disease caused by growth, and rickets if your diet is

 Guidelines to Correct Posture
Standing
- Feet should be a few inches apart
- Knees should be straight and relaxed
- Back should be straight
- Arms should be at the side of the body
- Hold your head high and look straight ahead

Sitting
- Hips should be as far back in the middle of the chair as
possible
- Back should be touching the back support of the chair
- Feet should be flat on the floor and knees bent
comfortably
- Hand placed on the lap or on the armrest of the chair
- Look straight ahead of you

Stand from a Sitting Position


- Thrust your body slightly forward
- Place your whole weight on your feet as you rise
- Feet should stay flat on the floor to maintain balance

Walking
- Legs should move forward alternately between
a supporting and swinging phase
- Knees should lightly touch each other
- Back should be straight
- Arm should be on the side and swinging gently
- Look straight ahead

Picking Up Things
- Should stand straight to the right of the object
you want to pick up
- Bend your right knee while your left knee is
half bent to the floor
- As you lower your body extend your right hand
down ward to pick up the object
- Go up to a standing position

 Importance of a Good Posture
Through correct posture,
1. You will feel relaxed and breathing comes more freely.
2. Your body will have good blood circulation.
3. You will have normal functioning of the body system.
4. It helps improve your body form.

 How does posture affect your confidence?


It’s hard to stay upright all day! — But besides looking sloppy, research
suggests bad posture might also affect self-confidence.

Studies suggest bad posture can affect how people view themselves, and those
with upright posture are more easily able to recall positive thoughts and tend to
have a stronger self-image.
