EXPERIENCES AND EVALUTION

OJT Experience

OJT is not just about collecting additional knowledge, it is about being exposed to the

real work and being familiar to its jobsite. And also the people you will encounter during the

actual job.

DAY 1: JUNE 18, 2019 (Tuesday)

In the day of 18th of June was our first day of OJT in E.B. Testing Center Inc. (Davao

Branch) together with our OJT Coordinator, Engr. Alma Sendad-Kato. We were introduced to

the laboratory head of E.B. Testing Center Inc. (Davao Branch), Allaries A. Mulingtapang.

In our 1st day of On-The-Job Training we were oriented by the head of laboratory,

Allaries A. Mulingtapang about the equipment’s in laboratory that can be used to test the soil and

the materials in construction and she also introduced us to the workers of the company.
I was tasked, together with my co-trainees to determine the liquid limit using the liquid

limit device or Casagrande Apparatus; (ASTM d4318), BS1377 and AASHTO T89. This device

consists of a brass cup, a hard rubber base and a grooving tool. Our test was done by using

Casagrande Apparatus.

In this state, I learned that the liquid limit of soil can be used to predict the consolidation

properties of soil while calculating allowable bearing capacity & settlement of foundation and also

it gives us information regarding the state of consistency of soil on site.

We were also tasked to perform the plastic limit of soil using the glass plate. The Plastic

Limit (PL) is determined by rolling out a thread of the fine portion of a soil on a flat, non-porous

surface. The procedure is defined in ASTM Standard D 4318. In this test, we were assisted by

Kuya Niel, one of the workers of E.B. Testing Center Inc. (Davao Branch).

We also performed the sieve analysis. Sieve analysis of soil test is in accordance to

ASTM D-422 (American Society for Testing and Materials) or BS 1377: Part 2 1990 (British

Standards) as both are the most widely used technical standards in construction. The objective of

this test is to determine the relative proportions of different granular sizes as they are passing

through certain sieve sizes. Thus, the percentage of sand, gravel, silt and clay can be obtained.

The result of data obtained from the test is used to the design of filters for earth dams and

to determine suitability of soil for road, highway, construction, embankment fill of dam, airport

runway etc.
DAY 2: June 20, 2019 (Thursday)

In our 2nd day, we visited the site in Emilio Escandor St, Quimpo Blvd, Davao City,

Davao del Sur. I was tasked, together with my co-trainees to perform the FDT (Field Density

Test) by sand cone method. The sand cone method is one of the most common methods that are

used for field density test in highway construction. After we got the samples, we put it in the can

and after that we put it in oven to dry the samples. In this test, we were assisted by Kuya

Kenneth, one of the workers of E.B. Testing Center Inc. (Davao Branch).
In the afternoon, we were tasked to perform the compaction.

Compaction is most useful for the preparation of sub base grade and

other pavement layers and in construction of embankment in order to

increase the stability and to decrease settlement.

DAY 3: June 22, 2019 (Saturday)

In our 3rd day, we were tasked to perform the compression test. The purpose of this test is

to determine the compressive strength of the concrete specimen. This test is to determine if the

concrete specimen meets the standard strength of 3000 psi. In this test we were assisted by the

workers of E.B Testing Center Inc. (Davao Branch).
