`Southern Italy Trip

Day 1 – 9/25/2019 – travel day

 Flying to Milan at 1945 (Air Italy 924); arrive at 1010

Day 2 – 9/26/2019 – travel day

Hotal: Agora Apartment (via Correale 6, Sorrento NA 80067


Transportation: train to Pompeii, city train to Sorrento

 Flew from Milan to Lamezia-Terme


 From here we took the bus to the train station
o Tickets are roughly 1.5€ (can find bus outside the airport)
 From Train station, took TrenItalia to Napoli Centrale
o About a 3 hour train ride; beautiful coastal scenic view
 Upon arrival to Napoli Centrale, we took the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento
 Checked into our hotel
 Dinner at Basilico
o This place had really good pizza; limoncello

Day 3 – 9/27/2019 – Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius

Hotal: Agora Apartment (via Correale 6, Sorrento NA 80067


Transportation: train to Pompeii

 Took the Circumvesuviana city train to Pompeii Scavi train station


 From this station, we took a local bus (EAV) to Mt. Vesuvius
 From here, we purchased tickets to enter Mt. Vesuvius (about 10€)
 Hiked up to the top; beautiful scenery
 Wear proper shoes and be sure to have water as this is a steep hike
 Upon finishing our hike we took the bus back to Pompeii city ruins (close walk to the bus station)
 Should be noted that Pompeii city ruins stop allowing people to enter at 6pm
 Highly recommend you get a tour guide when exploring the ruins – they will explain
everything
 Fun fact: Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 74 AD; gasses from the eruption killed about
2000 people out of 15000 people
 The city was buried in about 7-15m of ashes; in 18*** Pompeii was re-
discovered
 Took the train back to Sorrento
 Had dinner at a local diner – Amazing gnocchi
Day 4- 9/28/2019 – Amalfi + Ravello

Hotal: Agora Apartment (via Correale 6, Sorrento NA 80067


Transportation: public transport (Sorrento-Priora – Bus 5070)

 Woke up early in the morning, took the bus from Sorrento Station to Amalfi coast
o Spent about 10€ for a day pass – I thought this was excellent as you can use it as many
times as you would like, especially when going between cities.
o Bus ride can be very nauseating due to wavy roads and sharp turns
 I suggest getting to the bus stop early to get seats otherwise you’ll have to stand
 Bring plastic bags!
 Upon arriving to Amalfi, we visited the Amalfi Cathedral
 Explored the city of Amalfi
o Tried local cuisines and drinks
 Enjoyed remainder of the day at Amalfi Beach
 Should be noted, that you have to pay to use the rest room
 Upon finishing, took the bus to visit Ravello
o Wanted to visit Praiano however unable to as there was no clear bus stop for it
 Took the bus to Ravello – this is a popular site among tourists, so be sure to get to the bus stop
early as people literally trample one another to get on to the bus
 Ravello was probably the most beautiful site of the day
o Walked to the Infinity Terrace at Villa Cimbrone (~7€)
 Highly recommended -> can see the entire coast of Amalfi
 Spent some time here
 Bus back to Sorrento
 Had dinner at Light Aurora
o Good food

Day 5 - 9/29/2019 – Sorrento – Positano

Hotal: Agora Apartment (via Correale 6, Sorrento NA 80067


Transportation: public transport

 Woke up early, took a bus from the Sorrento bus station to Positano
 Once again, this bus was nauseating due to the winding roads
 At Positano, walked through the city square to get to the beach
 Hung out at Ocean bar
 Purchased Lemon slush from local vendor
 Walked to Hotel Palazzo Murat (beside francos bar)
o Can get very good pictures of the Coast from there
 Went to Franco’s bar
o Opens at 5pm however I suggest getting there earlier in order to get good seats
o They make excellent drinks, unfortunately they do not serve food
o If you cannot get a seat here, there are restaurants beside it where you can get similar
views of the coast
 Took the Bus back to Sorrento
o Once again, I recommend getting to the bus stop early as it can get overcrowded in the
bus
 Dinner at Basilico

Day 6 - 9/30/2019 – Sorrento to Capri

Hotal: Agora Apartment (via Correale 6, Sorrento NA 80067


Transportation: public transport

 Woke up early morning, took a Ferry to Capri


o Booked tickets at the pier, no need to book in advance
 On arriving to Capri
o Negotiated price for private boat to the various grotto, swimming and drinks
o Trip was total of 2 hours
o Worth doing
 Upon completing this, we took a bus to Anacapri
 Take a chair lift up to Mount Solaro
 Highest point in Capri
 Beautiful views of the entire island
o In my opinion, you don’t need the entire day on Capri
 Take Ferry back to Sorrento
 Dinner at local restaurant

Day 7 – 10/1/2019 – Sorrento to Palermo (travel Day)

Hotal: Al Bastione Holiday House (Check in at 2:30pm)


Transportation: Public transport, Flight, Car Rental

 Wake up early, take a cab to airport (Naples) then fly to Palermo


o Palermo is the capital of Sicily
 Walked around the city – very beautiful
o Should note you should enter from Porta Nuova
o Once inside the city gate, there is a free bus that runs throughout the city
 Enter through Porta Nuova (city entrance)
 Saw Norman Palace (did not take tour inside), Villa Bonanno
 Cathedral Di Palermo
 Quattro Canti -> 4 fountains at each corner of a street
 Teatro Massimo
o One of the Biggest opera theatres in Italy and 3 rd largest in Europe
 Dinner at one of the local restaurants
Day 8 – 10/2/2019 – Catania

Hotal: The Mori’s House - Cortile del Granato 26, Catania, Sicilia 95127
Transportation: Car Rental

 Woke up in the morning


 Drove to Mondello beach
o This is probably one of the best beaches I have been to
o Spent a few hours here
 Drove to Cefalu
o Waters was good but still feel Mondellow beach was better
 Drove to Catania
o On route, went to the Outlet mall
o Catania is a Port City
 On arrival to Catania, dinner at local restaurant

Day 9 – 10/3/2019 – Catania

Hotal: The Mori’s House - Cortile del Granato 26, Catania, Sicilia 95127
Transportation: Car Rental

 Wake up early
 We were going to go to Mt Etna however tours to the volcano were stopped as it had recently
erupted
 walked to the Piazza del Duomo
o fontana dell’Elefante statue
 symbol of the city
o surrounding it were local churches
 Brunch at local restaurants
 Grocery store – dinner made at AirBnB

Day 10 – 10/4/2019 – Tropea

Hotal: Gallo Rosso - Via Carmine, Tropea, Calabria 89861, Italy


Transportation: Car Rental

 Drove to Tropea
 In order to get here, we had to take a Ferry
o Ferry runs all day, 20 mins duration, can book ticket at site
 Roads to Tropea were very winding
 Arrived to Tropea beach
o amazing
 Climbed mountain to see Benedictine Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola
 Dinner at a local restaurant

Day 11 – 10/5/2019 – Lamezia Terme

Hotal: The English Garden Lamezia Terme - Via dei Bizantini Nr. 284
Transportation: Car Rental

 Check out late


 Continue beach day
 Explored downtown Tropea -> nice shops and restaurants
 Drove to Lamezia later in the day to check in

Day 12 - 10/6/2019 – Lamezia Terme - Toronto

Hotal: The English Garden Lamezia Terme - Via dei Bizantini Nr. 284
Transportation: Car Rental

 Check out of the hotel


 Drove to the airport

Important tips

 Driving in Italy is on the same side as north America


 Bring good shoes
 Purchase food and water from grocery stores as it will be cheaper
 Get a sim card for your phone, itll help you navigate
 Be sure to get bus passess – it will help keep costs down
