Mist Vs Water Type System
Water Usage: Water usage average per head per minute is high in
sprinkler compared water mist. The water requirement for a sprinkler
head is almost 10 times that of water mist head. This definitely makes
system more compact, easy to maintain, less water damage if there is
an event. In water mist system, less amount of water is used to get
greater level of fire suppression.
Temperature and Visibility: The operating temperature of auto nozzles
are 57-68-degree C. The range can be still optimized with appropriate
nozzles. The design must be above the highest ambient temperature in
both case. In the case of operational Visibility water sprinkler gives best
visibility and LP water mist system in operation as well gives good
visibility. HP water mist in operation reduces the visibility substantially
due to fogging. However, HP water mist provides higher degree of
smoke scrubbing.
Sensitivity of the system: The water mist system nozzles are equipped
with thermal sensitive bulbs which have the Relative Time Index better
than of sprinkler system. The nozzles in water mist system acts approx.
2.5 times faster than a sparkler head.
Droplet Size and Velocity: It is clear that the droplet size of the water
mist system is very small and in micron size. Due to smaller size, more
droplets are generated which in turn cool the fire or reduce the heat
effectively. The droplet from overhead sprinkler will be falling with
gravity while the HP water mist will be spraying the droplets at higher
velocity.
Area of Coverage: The more the area coverage per nozzle, greater the
energy absorption. With micron droplet sizes, greater velocity and
coverage, the steam can be formed at an expansion of 1L to 1640L
which acts like an inert gas smothering the atmosphere directly around
the fire plume and extinguish the fire. Sprinkler has its limitation.
Pipe Works: Less pipe works required since the area of coverage of the
water mist system is better than of sprinkler system. For the HP system
non corrosive SS is used.
Response Time: It depends on Dry/Wet System and is water mist
system responses and acts faster.
Application & Advantages: Compared to sprinkler, water mist system is
used for numerous applications. The water mist system extinguishes
the fire immediately. The operation of water mist system doesn't
require to shut the ventilation of the area which caught fire. Downtime
is less as it lighter the water damage and clean water used in the
system is electrically non-conductive. The size of the water tank is very
compact compared to large volume tank of sprinkler system. Water
mist system is very much useful for data centres, transformer rooms,
generator rooms, hospitals, hotels, other commercial buildings,
industrial application, LNG platforms, marine, offshore, oil and gas
applications.
