Answer the following questions before you start studying.

Read the conversation and practice it with a partner.
Applicant : Good morning, Sir.
Manager : Good morning. Have a seat, please.
Applicant : Thank you.
Manager : Is there anything I can do for you?
Applicant : I am looking for a job. I read in thenewspaper yesterday that there is a vacancy here,
Manager : Yes, I am looking for a secretary. May I have your application letter including your
resume?
Applicant : Yes, here you are, Sir.
Manager : Where did you graduate from?
Applicant : I graduated from Padjajaran University.
Manager : What major did you take there?
Applicant : My major were Tourism and English.
Manager : Have you ever worked or done an apprenticeship before?
Applicant : Yes, I have. I worked as a secretary for a company in Bandung.
Manager : Why did you quit your job?
Applicant : I don’t work there anymore because I didn’t like the working environtment there,
Manager : Why do you want to work here?
Applicant : I’d like to get a more challenging job.
Manager : Are you married?
Applicant : Yes, I am. I have a son.
Manager : Do you intend to go on with your study someday?
Applicant : Yes, I’m going to continue my study next month.
Manager : Where will you study?
Applicant : Padjajaran University.
Manager : What major will you take there?
Applicant : I will take business and management.
Manager : I think that’s great . I like a person who never stops learning. Well, my secretary will
call you to inform if you have been accepted or not.
Applicant : Thank you, Sir.
Manager : You’re welcome.

1. Asking about someone’s job description informal.
- I would like to know what you do
- What are your responsibilities?
- What are your duties?
Formal
- Could you tell me what your responsibilities are?
- Could you tell me what your duties are?
- Would you please tell me what your tasks are?
Below are some examples of a person’s job description.
- A secretary is responsible for receiving phone calls, typing letters, filing documents, arranging
meetings, and other duties.
- A public relation’s person has a duty to build a good relationship with other companies and colleagues.
2. Asking about someone’s educational background
- Can you tell me where you graduated from?
- Where did you graduated from?
- I would like to know where you studied?
- What major did you take there?
- Could you tell me about your major?
Below are some examples of talking about your educational background.
- I graduated from the school of Foreign Language.
- My majors were Tourism and English.
- I majored in management.
Grammar in focus
Simple present tense
Simple present tense is used when:
- The action is general.
- The action happens all the time, or habitually.
- The action is not only happening now.
- The statement is always true.
Examples:
- The sun rises in the east. (fact)
- The lessons start at 7 every morning. (habitual)
The patterns:
(+) Subject + verb1 + object + modifier
(-) Subject + do/does + not + verb1 + object + modifier
(?) Do/does + subject + verb1 + object + modifier
Examples:
= The sun sets in the west.
The sun doesn’t set in the east.
Does the sun set in the west?
= The boys always go to school by motorcycle.
The boys do not go to school by bus.
Do the boys go to school by motorcycle?
Note: If the subject is the third person ( he/she/it), we must add s/es.
