Educational Philosophies in Film

Ram uses several teaching philosophies as an art teacher in the movie. He employs realism by understanding Ishaan's situation through his notebooks and background. He also uses naturalism by including drawing in lessons and letting Ishaan learn through experience. Ram applies pragmatism by having Ishaan learn through doing, which helps him develop confidence. In contrast, Ishaan's original teachers follow an idealist philosophy that limits creativity. Overall, the movie shows the difference between a rigid, idealist approach and one that understands and accommodates each child's individual needs.

1. Educational Philosophies in the movie “Like Stars on Earth, Every Child is Special”

IDEALISM was shown in the curriculum of the school that is subject matter-centered. Most of the
teachers in the movie used lectures, Socratic method and assign readings. The teachers want their
students to be perfect. There’s no place for imperfection. They can’t notice individual differences. The
teacher controlled the learners. The set-up of the classroom is well-arranged and conventional. A
teacher is standing and lecturing in front which is also known as teacher-centered learning.

REALISM - We can consider Ram Shankar Nikumbh as a realist teacher. He did everything to know
the child’s situation. He was patient enough to exert effort to teach Ishaan to compute, read and write.
He let him to gain self-confidence.

NATURALISM - Drawing is included in the teaching style of Ram. According to this philosophy the
child learn more through direct experience that is by doing. It is a child centered process of education.
It emphasizes on the natural interests and capacities of the children. It focuses on the learning from
experience of the children, so that the child is educated to solve all the problems of the life successfully.
The event that naturalism was seen is the art fair for the staff and students. The competition’s judge and
principal declared the Ishaan as a winner with his creative style.

PRAGMATISM - The teaching – learning process of the new art teacher Ram used pragmatism.
Learning by doing was shown in the movie which made Ishaan creative, confident and co-operative.
He provided opportunities for the natural development of innate qualities of children. Ram played a
very challenging role in the educative process. He is very alert and observant.

2. Teaching Philosophy used by Ram & other Teachers

a. One of the teaching philosophies of Ram is Realism. He observed Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi’s
notebooks from other classes to figure out why he is behaving badly. Then, he had a conclusion
that the child might have dyslexia. He checked the student’s family background to know about the
real reason why he can’t read and write. His action is right to know the child before filling him with
knowledge and abilities. He let Ishaan’s parents know about his condition. He told them that the
child is special, who needs love, support, understanding and attention. He offered help after he
discovered that Ishaan is very artistically talented. Ram prepared the child for a happy, successful
and real life. He developed the student’s self – determination. He used audio - visual aids in
education. As a realist teacher, he shared about the inventors and their contributions that will inspire
the students from the success stories of famous people who were dyslexic. It can prove that he has
a knowledge of child psychology.

One of the aims of education is to improve the capacities of the child. Ram applied Rousseau’s
philosophy where there’s two-way play method of teaching, learning by doing, during play Ishaan
learns a lot and is educated. We can also figure out that he also include Naturalism & Pragmatism
in his teaching styles.

b. Sen Sir and Tiwari Sir: They are teachers at New Era High School. They can be considered as
idealist teachers because they limit the students’ creativity. Eventually their teaching philosophy
was changed as Ishaan improved his academic performance and won the art fair.

3. Philosophies of the first school vs. the boarding school

The first school philosophy is idealism while the boarding school are idealism and realism. The teachers
in the first school perceived that they must be the center of attraction. Student’s creativity is not
emphasized. They expect the learners all-knowing and competitive. At first the teachers at the boarding
school (New Era School) practiced idealism. However, they prepare the children for real life because
they became independent so it also have realism philosophy. When Ram came to the school the
Principal realized that Ishaan needs special attention. He learned things in different ways.

4. Social Institutions that make and unmake learners

a. Family/Parents – In the movie, Nandkishore Awasthi, the father of the child is perfectionist,
strict, and dominating. He wants his child to always achieve. He might unmake Ishaan.
However, he realized his mistakes after Ishaan improved academically.
-Parents can give good future to their child. Nurturing, socializing, and decision-
making are skills adapt from parents.

b. Teachers – The teachers are the second parent of the students. They instill knowledge and
facilitate in the learning process. But, we can’t hide the fact that some of them are
irresponsible. Teachers are supposed to use words that promote love and support.

c. School – School must be conducive to learning. It should be the environment that promote
quality education. Physical appearance of the area could be an inspiration or an disruption
factor in learning.

d. Peers – They may be able to change yourself for the better. It also have negative effect but a
strong support from family and ability/skill to choose friends from the peers are the best way
to keep away from negative peer pressure.

e. Society/Community - Society plays an important role in shaping an individual’s character.

Personality is not acquired biologically. It is a social process and depends upon the
institutions which socialize it. Students learn to care for the environment and needy by
interacting with different people.

f. Government – If they fail to provide the needs of the learners it may unmake learners.

g. Religious organizations – This organization contributes in the well-being and growth of

learners.

h. Media - It is a source of information for students. It can have negative or positive influence
for learners.

5. India and Philippine Education

India has similarity with Philippine Education. Philippines has K–12 basic education
system the same with India. It also promote education for all. The levels for schooling (Pre-primary,
primary, secondary and tertiary/TVL) are the same with our country.

Majority of Indian students’ time is preparing for competitive exams rather than learning
or playing. Its curriculum is more on memorization rather than encouraging independent or creative
thinking. This idea is based on the movie. Most of the teachers are using idealism philosophy.

Now, Philippine Education focuses on child-centered curriculum. The teacher acts as a

facilitator. Both countries undergone educational reform. They saw the demand for skilled workers.
They encourage learners to enroll in vocational courses. Schools in India and Philippines are
finally gearing up to advocate a student-centered learning educational philosophy. Before, teacher
is in control of the learning.
