POSITION PAPER

Same-sex Marriage: Thumbs Up or Down?

Jade Karen C. Cariaga

January 14, 2020

The legalization of same-sex marriage here in the Philippines

is a big issue that has brought different opinions and claims

regarding it. Some say that it is a good one to be legalized for

it will give happiness to those who are in a same-sex relationship,

while others also claim that it is against God’s will. I believed,

same-sex marriage must not be legalized here in our country

because, by this, we are neglecting what God wanted for us to do,

and that is to go ye and multiply responsibly.

Some people, especially the LGBT’s are in favor of same-sex

marriage. They are saying that it is the only way to attain their

happiness and to be with their loved ones in a lifetime even though

they have the same sexual identity. An addition, they are also

claiming that they have the right to not to be discriminated

against have the freedom to choose what they want to be in a

lifetime.
While as to my stand, it must not be legalized. As God said

in the book of Genesis, let us be fruitful and multiply, and it

can only be done through a man and a woman who will do the process,

and not the man-man nor woman-woman who are unable to do so. In a

recent study put forward by Mark Regnerus, he assessed populations

of adults, both who lived in a home with heterosexual parents, and

those who lived in a home where either one or both of the parents

had been in a same-sex relationship in their lifetime. The results

were astounding. A higher percentage of children who had parents

with a past same-sex relationship used marijuana, smoked, were

arrested and convicted for non-minor offenses, and thought about

suicide (Regnerus). Moreover, it is also written at Article XV,

section 2 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution that marriage is the

foundation of family, where the concept of marriage refers to the

ceremony by which a man and a woman become husband and wife.

Hence, the bible and the Constitution are the ones saying

that partnership is for a man and a woman. Yes, we all indeed have

the freedom to choose what we want in our lives but we have to set

in our minds that we need to act in accordance with the will of

God and the law.
